If you want to move a save between consoles without a membership, use Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer instead. Before choosing either method, compare the save timestamps: downloading or transferring over an existing save can permanently replace it.
Choose cloud backup or console transfer

Use cloud backup when you want a separate copy you can download later, including if you lose access to the original console. Use local transfer when both consoles are available and you want to move a save. Back up a save to Nintendo’s cloud
Cloud backups require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and only games that support Save Data Cloud can use this method. Nintendo says automatic backup is enabled for compatible software when a membership starts; you can also back up a save manually.
- From the HOME Menu, highlight the game and press + or –.
- Select Save Data Cloud, then choose the user whose save you want to back up.
- Select Back Up Save Data.
You can also open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, choose the user and game, and select Back Up Save Data. Nintendo’s backup instructions explain the options.

If the game does not support cloud backup
If Save Data Cloud reports that the software is unsupported, you cannot back up that game with this service. Support varies by title; check the game’s own Save Data Cloud entry rather than assuming every game is covered.
Restore a cloud save to the console
Restoring a cloud backup means downloading it to the console. First compare the most recent console and cloud timestamps so you do not replace a newer save with an older one.

- From the HOME Menu, highlight the game and press + or –.
- Select Save Data Cloud, then choose the relevant user.
- Check the cloud and console save dates and times. If the console save is newer, back it up rather than downloading the older cloud copy; if the cloud save is newer, download it.
- Select Download Save Data to restore the cloud copy.
The alternative menu path is System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud; select the user and game, then choose Download Save Data. Nintendo warns that the download replaces the existing console save for that game, and overwritten data cannot be recovered. Read Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 cloud download instructions before proceeding.
Automatic downloads and Sleep Mode
If automatic download is enabled, the console can download newer cloud data while in Sleep Mode. Leave it in Sleep Mode until the download finishes, as described in Nintendo’s download guidance.

Move a save directly between nearby consoles
Nintendo’s transfer feature does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Both consoles must be near one another, connected to the internet, and have the same Nintendo Account linked to a user on each console.
- On the source console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Choose the user and save to send, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- On the target console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Receive Save Data, then follow the prompts.
Sending a save deletes it from the source console, so this is a move rather than a backup copy. If a save for the same game already exists on the target and you continue with the overwrite, the existing target save is replaced and cannot be recovered. Account, console, and membership limits
- Saves are user-specific. Nintendo says cloud save data is unique to each user and cannot be transferred between users. For a local transfer, the same Nintendo Account must be linked to a user on both consoles.
- Switch and Switch 2 saves can be shared under the same account. Nintendo says Nintendo Switch software save backups can be shared between Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch when using the same Nintendo Account. A Switch 2 Edition save may be accessed on Switch, but Switch 2-exclusive enhancements and content require a Switch 2. See Nintendo’s guide to playing games across multiple consoles.
- Cloud access depends on membership. If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, access to cloud backups is blocked. Nintendo says resubscribing within 180 days restores access to previous backups; its instructions do not establish recovery after that window. See the Nintendo Switch 2 cloud download page.
