To move Edge data to another device, sign in with the same account and turn on sync for the data you want. For a separate copy, Edge supports importing favorites from an HTML file and importing passwords from a CSV file; desktop Edge can export saved passwords to CSV. These options do not amount to a complete backup of every local detail in an Edge profile.
Choose the right way to recover Edge data

Back up Edge data with sync
Sync is the most straightforward choice when the old device is available and you want supported data to appear on another device. On the old device, open Edge’s profile settings and review the Sync settings. Turn on the categories you want to keep available. Then sign in to Edge with the same account on the destination device and check its Sync settings.
Microsoft lists data types that can include favorites, passwords, browsing history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill details, and payment information. The categories and their descriptions can vary across Microsoft’s guidance, so use the Sync settings shown in your current version of Edge rather than assuming one fixed list. Microsoft also notes that saved collections or reading lists may sync with favorites.
Sync is not a full image of the browser profile. Microsoft’s guidance does not guarantee recovery of every extension detail, site permission, session, local setting, or other profile-specific item.

Import favorites from an HTML file
If you have a favorites HTML file, import it into Edge using the browser’s import controls. Microsoft documents this procedure:
- In Edge, open Settings > Profiles > Import browser data.
- Under Other import locations, select the import action.
- Choose Favorites or bookmarks HTML file, select the HTML file, and complete the import.
Imported favorites appear in a folder on the Favorites bar, which may be named “Imported.” These instructions establish how to import an HTML file; they do not establish the current export steps for every Edge platform. Check Edge’s current menu if you need to create a favorites file.

Move saved passwords with a CSV file
Microsoft documents password export in desktop Edge. On the device that has the saved passwords, use Edge’s password settings to export them to a CSV file. On the destination device, open Settings > Profiles > Import browser data, choose the password CSV import option, and follow the prompts.
Treat the exported file as exposed credentials, not as a protected backup. Microsoft warns: “Passwords exported to a CSV are not protected and will be visible to anyone who can see the exported file.” Keep it in a controlled location during transfer, avoid shared folders, and permanently delete it after importing. Deleting the CSV does not remove passwords that remain saved in Edge. Microsoft says password export is not available in Edge for Android or iOS.

What Windows Backup does—and does not do
Windows Backup can help recover supported Windows files, settings, and apps. Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance specifically points users to signing in to Edge and turning on sync to keep Edge preferences available across devices. Use Windows Backup as a complement to Edge’s sync or supported data-import options, not as proof that every part of an Edge profile will be recreated.

When you are signed in and sync is on, deleting data in Edge can remove it from other synced devices too. Microsoft’s sync guidance and browser history instructions distinguish local data from data that may be removed across synced devices. Before clearing browsing data, review the selected data categories and confirm whether sync is enabled.
