To move Android apps and their data safely, first make a current Google Account backup, check its Backup details, and verify that critical apps sync or export their own data. Restore during the new phone’s setup—or after a factory reset. No general Android backup guarantees every app’s private data will return.
Before you start: protect the data that matters
Android’s Google backup includes apps and app data as categories, but coverage depends on each app. Google warns, “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” An app may use Android backup, its own account sync, or neither. Treat information stored only on the phone as at risk until you confirm that it is backed up or exported.
Check each important app
- Open the app’s settings or help and look for cloud sync, backup, or export. Confirm that sync has finished or that you can access the backed-up data from another device.
- For apps with essential local information, follow the app maker’s instructions to export or back up that information before resetting or trading in the phone.
- For WhatsApp, Google directs users to WhatsApp’s own backup process: enable backups on the old phone, then sign in and open WhatsApp on the new Android phone.
Know what Android backup means
Android Developers describes Auto Backup for Apps as an app-level feature available on Android 6.0 and later. The app’s backup agent and configuration determine what is included; the documented file-based Auto Backup capacity is up to 25 MB per app. This is not a promise that every app uses the feature or backs up all its data. Make and verify a Google Account backup
- On the old phone, open Settings and find the Google services or backup section. Google’s documented route is Google services > All services > Backup; exact labels vary by phone and Android version.
- Turn on Backup by Google One if offered, and check that the selected Google Account is the one you plan to use on the new phone.
- Tap Back up now. A Google One backup can take up to 24 hours to complete.
- Open Backup details and check the backup status, date, and included data. Do not erase the old phone just because you tapped the backup button; wait until the backup is shown as saved or complete and review what it contains.
- Use a screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Google says backup data is encrypted in transit, and some data receives additional encryption using the screen lock.
Google states that a Google Account can back up to 15 GB at no charge; check your account’s available storage and backup details. Google One may provide additional storage. These steps can vary by device, and some require Android 9 or later. Work-profile, work-only, and company-owned devices may not support this personal backup flow or may be subject to organization restrictions. See Google’s Android backup and restore guidance.

Choose cloud restore or direct phone transfer

Restore a Google backup on a new Android phone
- Turn on the new phone and follow its setup prompts. Connect to the internet when prompted.
- When asked to copy or restore data, sign in to the Google Account associated with the old phone’s backup.
- Select the available backup and choose the data to restore when the setup flow offers that choice.
- Keep the phone online and allow the restore to finish. Google says the process can take up to 24 hours to complete fully; apps and data may arrive over time.
- Open important apps and check their accounts, settings, and content. Complete any app-specific sign-in, sync, or restore steps.
If the new phone is already set up
Adding the Google Account may restore some previously backed-up information. Google says a full restore of other data is available during first setup or after a factory reset. A reset erases data on the receiving phone, so back up anything newly created there and use this route only if the setup-time restore is necessary.

What transfers—and what may not
Google’s direct setup-transfer guide lists apps and certain app data, music, photos, videos, contacts on the phone or SIM, text messages, most phone settings (which vary by phone and Android version), multimedia in text messages, wallpaper, and call history. The guide also identifies items that do not copy through that transfer:
- Downloads such as PDF files.
- Photos, videos, and music stored in hidden folders.
- Apps that were not installed from Google Play.
- Data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Accounts other than Google Accounts and their data.
- Contacts or calendars synced with non-Google services.
- Ringtones and some settings.
Photos and videos already available in Google Photos can be viewed there; that is distinct from restoring other backed-up data through setup. If a file or app state is absent from the transfer list, or belongs to a non-Google account, verify how it is stored before wiping the old phone.

Check Android version compatibility
Google says a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version. Its transfer guidance also warns that an older Android version on the new device may result in an incomplete transfer. Update the receiving phone where possible and check compatibility before starting migration. See Google’s backup and restore guidance and Google’s device-transfer guide.

Before erasing or trading in the old phone
- Confirm the Google backup is marked saved or complete and review its Backup details.
- Verify the account used for backup and that you can sign in to it on the new phone.
- Check critical apps individually for completed sync, an app-specific backup, or an export you can access.
- Save local-only files and items excluded from Google’s direct transfer list through an appropriate separate method.
- If the device is managed by an employer or school, follow its administrator’s instructions; personal backup and transfer options may be restricted.
