To back up a Galaxy phone, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data, select the categories shown on your phone, and tap Back up now. To restore, open Restore data, select the backup and categories you want, then tap Restore. Sign in to the Samsung account used for the backup and wait for the backup or restore to finish before leaving the screen. Menu names and available categories can vary by model, software, country, and carrier, so use the options displayed on your device as the final guide. Samsung Canada and Samsung UK document this workflow.
Back up your Galaxy phone to Samsung Cloud
- Connect the phone to a reliable network and sign in to the Samsung account you want associated with the backup.
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud. On some US devices, Samsung documents an alternate path: tap your Samsung account name in Settings, then Samsung Cloud.
- Tap Back up data. If asked, review or accept the relevant permissions.
- Select the categories you want to include. The list shown on your phone may differ from Samsung’s general documentation.
- Tap Back up now and leave the phone connected until Samsung Cloud shows that the operation is complete. A tap starts the backup attempt; it is not confirmation that the data finished uploading.
Samsung’s Canada guidance recommends Wi-Fi because mobile-data charges may apply. Automatic backup can be configured on the Samsung Cloud backup screen. Samsung UK says automatic backup requires the device to be charging, its screen to be off, and a Wi-Fi connection. Samsung’s UK instructions describe those prerequisites.
What Samsung Cloud can back up
Samsung’s UK guidance documents the following backup and restore categories, but does not promise that every item is available on every Galaxy phone:
- Call and message history, including enhanced, multimedia, and text messages; some large message files may be excluded.
- Contacts saved on the device, and calendar schedules, events, and tasks saved on the device.
- Alarms, world clocks, and timers.
- Selected settings, such as accessibility, ringtones, Samsung Keyboard, Wi-Fi, paired Bluetooth devices, face and fingerprint recognition, and Always On Display.
- Home screen layout, non-default wallpapers, and Samsung DeX settings.
- Apps and Samsung app settings.
- Voice Recorder recordings.
Samsung says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud in its Canada support guidance updated in 2026. Large message files may also be omitted. The categories and limits available to you depend on the phone model, operating-system version, country, and carrier; check the actual category list under Back up data. Samsung Canada’s support page explains these qualifications.

Samsung Cloud backup is different from sync
A backup is a restore point you can select later. Sync keeps supported data updated across Galaxy devices signed in to the same Samsung account; it is not a complete copy of the phone. Samsung lists examples of syncable data such as Samsung Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, Samsung Internet, Notes, Pass, Wi-Fi, Health, and Gallery, but the available items vary. The UK guide also notes that contacts and calendars associated with a Google account are not synchronized through Samsung Cloud. Do not assume a synced item is included in a device backup, or that a backup includes everything visible in a synced app. Samsung UK explains the distinction and supported sync examples.
Restore a Samsung Cloud backup
Use this workflow after a factory reset or when setting up a replacement Galaxy phone. Make sure the device is signed in to the Samsung account associated with the backup.

- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud. On some US devices, go through Settings > Samsung account name > Samsung Cloud.
- Tap Restore data.
- Select the source phone or backup. Check that it is the backup you intend to use.
- Select the categories to restore, then tap Restore.
- Keep the phone connected and wait for the process to complete. Check the relevant apps and settings after restoration.
Samsung Cloud’s restore screen is the place to review which backup and categories are selected before proceeding. For Google Drive, Samsung says restoration begins during the setup wizard on a new or reset phone; that is a separate restore path, not a Samsung Cloud restore. Samsung US documents the Google Drive and Smart Switch alternatives.
If the backup or restore does not work
- The backup is missing: Confirm that the phone is signed in to the Samsung account used when the backup was created, then check the available backups under Restore data.
- The latest backup is not listed: Return to Back up data, run Back up now, and wait for a completion status. Do not treat starting the process as proof that a fresh backup exists.
- An expected category is absent: Samsung says supported categories vary by model, operating system, country, and carrier. The options on that phone are authoritative; some content, including files above Samsung’s stated size limit, may not be eligible.
- The menu path differs: Search Settings for “Samsung Cloud” or look under Accounts and backup. Samsung’s documented alternate route on some US phones is through the Samsung account name in Settings.
- Automatic backup has not run: Check that the phone is charging, the screen is off, and Wi-Fi is connected, as specified in Samsung UK’s instructions.
- You are restoring after a reset or on a replacement: Confirm the Samsung account before proceeding. If the data was stored through Google Drive or Smart Switch instead, use that service’s own setup or restore process.
Samsung Canada’s cloud-access guidance, last updated February 22, 2024, says data may be deleted after more than 12 months without use, with advance notice. This is Canada-specific guidance and may not reflect current rules in every region, so check notices from Samsung and your account. That page also says an individual device backup cannot be downloaded from the web portal; recovery requires syncing or restoring to a compatible device. See Samsung Canada’s cloud-access guidance. Use another method for data Samsung Cloud does not cover
If a category is unavailable or you need separate copies of selected files, choose a method suited to that data. Samsung lists Smart Switch for backups to a Windows PC, Mac, or compatible external storage, and documents manual copying of selected files to a computer or USB OTG storage. Smart Switch backups and local file copies are not Samsung Cloud backups; use the corresponding Smart Switch or file-copy workflow to retrieve them. A USB-C OTG flash drive is only an option for compatible phones and selected local-file or Smart Switch workflows, not for Samsung Cloud backup or restore. Samsung US describes Smart Switch and manual-copy options.
