You can save a Galaxy phone to a Windows PC or Mac with Smart Switch, supported external storage, Samsung Cloud, or Google Drive. Choose based on the data you need to keep and the options your model supports: these methods do not all back up the same items.
A backup is a safeguard, not a requirement Samsung establishes for every software update. Samsung’s guidance mainly covers resets, repairs, and moving to another device. If an update installs normally, you generally do not need to restore the backup; restoration is for situations such as a reset or setting up a replacement phone.
Before you begin: choose a backup that fits your data
First check the backup settings on your Galaxy: note the most recent backup time and which categories are selected. Menu names and available items vary by model, software version, country, and carrier, so use the labels shown on your phone.

Samsung’s cited US Smart Switch guidance lists support for Galaxy devices running Android 4.3 or later for general transfers; encrypted data transfer requires Android 7.0 or later. It lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later as compatible computer systems and says Chromebooks are not compatible. Check Samsung’s current support information for your region and the software on your exact device.

Back up with Smart Switch on a computer
This creates a local copy on a Windows PC or Mac. Make sure the computer has enough free space, then follow these steps:
- Install Smart Switch on the computer and, if prompted, on the Galaxy.
- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable.
- Unlock the phone and tap Allow if it asks to grant access.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer and select Backup.
- Review the categories, select what you want to save, and start the backup.
- Wait for Smart Switch to report that the backup is complete. Do not disconnect the phone while it is running.
To restore, connect the Galaxy to the computer, open Smart Switch, choose Restore, select the backup and the categories you want, and follow the prompts. Smart Switch may omit some data or apps, so check separately for anything essential that is not clearly included.
Back up to an SD card, USB drive, or SSD
Smart Switch can save a backup to supported external storage. A compatible SD card may go in the phone’s card slot; a USB flash drive or SSD can connect to the charging port, sometimes through an OTG adapter. A USB-C flash drive is one possible option, but connector type alone does not guarantee compatibility. Check whether your Galaxy supports the storage device and has enough space.

- Connect or insert the external storage.
- Open Smart Switch and tap the SD card or external-storage icon.
- Choose Back up, select the categories to save, then tap Back up.
- Wait for the completion message, such as Done, before disconnecting the storage.
To restore, connect the storage to the target Galaxy, open Smart Switch, tap the same storage icon, choose Restore, select the backup and desired content, and complete the prompts. If there is not enough space to restore everything at once, Samsung says you may need to return later for items that did not fit.

Samsung Australia’s guide for Australian Galaxy variants lists calls and contacts, messages, apps, settings, home screen, images, videos, audio, and documents among supported categories. It also identifies exclusions, including draft or failed messages, calendar events from synced accounts, some apps blocked by security or compatibility, and default or theme-store wallpapers. Coverage can differ elsewhere, so check your local Samsung support page and the categories displayed on your phone.
Back up and restore with Samsung Cloud
On supported models, Samsung Canada gives this backup path: Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data. Select the items you want, tap Back up now, and tap Done when the backup finishes. The menu and available categories may differ on your Galaxy.

Samsung Cloud’s listed categories include call and message history, contacts and calendars saved on the device, clock data, settings, home-screen layout, some app data and settings, and voice recordings. Samsung says some large message files may not be backed up, and files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud. Contacts and calendars held in a Google Account are not synchronized by Samsung Cloud. Check the category list on your device rather than assuming every item is covered.
To enable automatic backup, use the options in Samsung Cloud settings for the items you want. Samsung says automatic backup requires the phone to be charging, with its screen off and connected to Wi-Fi.
To restore, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Restore data, choose the source phone and items, then tap Restore. Exact labels and eligible items vary by model, operating system, country, and carrier.

Back up and restore with Google Drive
Samsung Singapore lists this route: Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Drive > Back up data > Back up now. Its listed categories include apps, photos and videos, SMS and MMS messages, call history, device settings, and Google Account data. Check the categories on your phone; the menu and coverage can vary.
Samsung says automatic backup can take place over Wi-Fi while the phone is charging and unused for at least two hours. Backups use the storage available with your Google Account; additional storage may require a paid plan.
Google Drive restoration happens during initial setup on a new Galaxy or after a factory reset—not as a general restore action from the phone’s ordinary settings. During setup, reach Copy apps & data, choose the option to proceed without another device, select the backup, choose items, and tap Restore. Samsung warns that a backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a device running an older Android version.

Copy selected files manually
For specific documents, photos, videos, audio, or folders, use My Files to copy or move them to a computer or connected external storage. Samsung says this approach can work without Smart Switch or an internet connection. It is useful for checking that important individual files exist in a separate location, but it does not preserve the phone’s full settings, apps, or system state.
Verify the backup before installing the update
- Confirm the backup shows a recent completion time or a finished message—not merely that automatic backup is enabled.
- Review the selected categories and compare them with what you actually need to preserve.
- Check the destination: for a computer or external-storage backup, make sure the backup completed before disconnecting; for cloud options, check the phone’s backup listing or account settings.
- Make a separate copy of any critical file whose inclusion is uncertain, and verify that it is accessible from the destination.
- Keep access to the account used for the backup. Account access may be needed to use cloud data during recovery.
Once verified, proceed with the update. The backup remains a recovery option; it does not need to be restored just because the update completed.
