Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMake a fresh backup and verify that it completed before handing your iPhone in for repair. Apple warns that service may erase the device. Then check iCloud sync, protect your credentials and Wallet items, and follow the Find My instructions for your iOS version and repair provider.
1. Make and verify a fresh backup
Apple supports backups through iCloud or a Mac or PC. Choose the option you can complete and later access for restoration; neither route is universally best for every setup.
Back up with iCloud
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now and stay connected to Wi-Fi until the backup finishes.
- Check the date and time shown beneath Back Up Now. If an alert says there is not enough iCloud storage, resolve it and complete a backup before assuming your data is protected.
Apple’s step-by-step instructions are in How to back up your iPhone or iPad with iCloud (September 24, 2026).
Back up to a Mac or PC
Use Apple’s computer-backup workflow for your particular Mac or PC, then confirm the computer has completed the backup. Apple’s backup and restore guidance covers the computer route; restoration uses a USB connection. The connector depends on the iPhone and computer, so use a compatible cable you already have rather than assuming a particular cable is required for every setup.

See Apple’s instructions for backing up an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (May 20, 2026) and restoring from a backup (June 29, 2026).
Choose based on what you can access
- iCloud: You need Wi-Fi and enough available iCloud storage. Check the completion time on the iPhone.
- Mac or PC: You need access to a computer and a compatible USB connection. Keep the computer backup available until the phone is restored.
2. Check iCloud sync separately
A backup and the completion of iCloud syncing are separate checks in Apple’s service-preparation instructions. Confirm that the iCloud features you use have finished syncing; Apple says the status icon beside “Saved to iCloud” should be green. A successful backup timestamp alone does not replace this sync check.
3. Protect your accounts, passcode, and Wallet
Before service, turn off Apple Cash and remove cards and passes from Wallet, as Apple directs. Do not give anyone your Apple Account password, device passcode, or account security details. If software support requires access to the iPhone, stay present while the technician has access.

4. Prepare Find My for the repair
The steps depend on iOS version and repair eligibility. Apple’s September 2026 instructions distinguish iOS 27 or later from iOS 26 or earlier:
- iOS 27 or later: For an eligible repair, use Ready for Repair or Trade In and follow the repair provider’s guidance. Apple says this feature keeps Find My on during an eligible repair.
- iOS 26 or earlier: Apple says to turn off Find My before service.
- If you cannot complete the step on the iPhone: Use Find My on another device or visit icloud.com/find, as Apple directs.
See Apple’s instructions for using Ready for Repair or Trade In. Availability and service directions can vary by country and provider; follow the instructions for your location.

5. Check the repair details before you go
- Review Parts and Service History. Apple says a part marked Finish Repair needs that repair completed before you bring the iPhone to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
- Check whether you need an appointment and follow the provider’s instructions.
- Bring the iPhone, relevant accessories, proof of purchase if available, and identification.
Apple’s regional service appointment preparation checklist notes that products and services may not be available in every country.
6. Restore your data after service
Your iPhone may be erased during service. When you get it back, restore from the iCloud or computer backup you made, following Apple’s restore instructions. If you choose to set up the iPhone as new but later want the older backup, Apple advises erasing the device and restoring from that backup promptly: newer backups made after setting up as new can overwrite the previous backup.
If you turned off Find My for the repair, turn it back on after the phone returns.
