Before switching web hosts, make a recoverable copy of both your website’s files and its database, then store a copy somewhere outside the hosting account you plan to close. For WordPress, a database export alone is not a complete backup: it does not include your themes, plugins, uploads, or other site files. Restore the copy on the new host and check the site, DNS, and email before retiring the old account.

What to include in a website backup

A useful pre-migration backup has two parts: the files that make up the site and the database that holds content and settings. WordPress’s Backups – Advanced Administration Handbook recommends backing up the database before a move and explains how to save the WordPress files.

  • Website files: the WordPress core, themes, plugins, media and uploads, configuration, and any other files your site needs. Depending on the host, these may be in the WordPress directory or elsewhere in the account.
  • Database: posts and other generated content, settings, and related site data. WordPress’s database backup guide covers exporting it. The database does not contain the site’s files.

For a CMS other than WordPress, use the same files-plus-database principle as a starting point, but confirm the platform’s and host’s instructions. The specific procedures below are for WordPress and, where noted, cPanel.

Make and keep the backup before the move

  1. Inventory what the site depends on. Identify the CMS, site files and databases, domains and subdomains, DNS records, email service, SSL/TLS setup, scheduled tasks, and integrations that matter. The exact inventory depends on your platform and hosting stack.
  2. Save the whole site directory and export the database. WordPress documentation describes using a host’s backup tools or copying files through an FTP client or shell access. Keep the database export associated with the matching file archive; label the files so you can tell which site and backup they belong to.
  3. Copy both parts outside the old account. Download the file archive and database export to storage you can access independently of the current host. WordPress recommends keeping multiple copies on different media, such as a computer and a separate drive. A storage device is only a place to keep a backup; it does not create or verify one.
  4. Check that the backup is present and usable enough to proceed. Confirm the archive contains the site files you expect and that the database export exists and can be opened or read. There is no universal verification test specified in the cited WordPress procedures. Do not treat a backup as restore-tested unless you have actually restored it.

Choose a migration route

A downloadable backup gives you a portable copy. An account transfer or host-assisted move may reduce manual work, but it is not automatically a substitute for a separate backup or a guarantee that every configuration detail will move.

Download files and export the database Cross-provider moves, or when you need a portable copy or a control-panel transfer is unavailable. Confirm the full file set and database export, retain the destination database credentials, know how you will restore both, and keep a separate copy outside the old host. See the WordPress file backup guidance and database backup guide.
cPanel & WHM Transfer Tool Eligible cPanel-to-cPanel account moves when the operator has root or elevated access. Check access, transfer limitations, DNS update settings, mail routing, custom records, and version-specific exclusions. The cPanel Transfer Tool documentation says the tool requires root or sudo/su privileges. Users with only account credentials should use cPanel’s Transfer or Restore a cPanel Account interface.
Host-provided migration service When you prefer assistance or do not have the administration access needed for a manual or control-panel move. Ask what files, databases, email, DNS, SSL, and testing are included, and whether you will receive a separate backup. Coverage varies by provider and service.

Restore the site on the new host

Prepare the destination before changing DNS or closing the source account. WordPress’s backup guidance describes restoring files and then the database as a typical order. Follow the new host’s instructions if its platform or migration process requires a different sequence.

  1. Create the destination site and database. Set up the destination as required by the host. Record the new database name, username, and password.
  2. Restore the site files. Put the saved WordPress directory and other required files in the appropriate location on the new host.
  3. Import the database export. For a phpMyAdmin import, select the destination database, choose the SQL export, and run the import. Confirm the interface reports success.
  4. Update WordPress database credentials. If the destination uses different credentials, update the database name, user, and password in wp-config.php. WordPress’s backup and restore guidance covers this configuration step.
  5. Check the restored site before cutover. Open the homepage and important pages; check images, forms, login, and any business-critical transaction paths. These are practical checks, not a universal official test sequence.

Handle domain changes, DNS, and email

If the domain or site URL is changing

Old URLs can remain in the WordPress database after a move. WordPress warns that a naive database-wide search-and-replace can corrupt serialized values. Use a serialization-aware tool or WP-CLI where available, following the WordPress migration guidance. If the domain and URLs stay the same, this part of the move is simpler, although database credentials or rewrite rules may still need attention.

Before changing DNS or shutting down the source

Keep access to DNS management and review the records your site and services use, including A/AAAA, MX, and custom TXT or other records. The cPanel Transfer Tool can update some records depending on its settings and server configuration. If DNS updates are disabled, zones, mail routing, or custom records may need manual setup; records that exist only on the source may be lost when that server is shut down. cPanel documents these conditions in its Transfer Tool guidance.

Keep the old hosting account until the new site and relevant mail routing work. Do not assume an account transfer handles every custom DNS record or email arrangement.

Common backup and migration mistakes

  • Exporting only the database. The site still needs its files, including media, themes, plugins, and configuration.
  • Leaving the only copy on the old host. Download or otherwise retain the backup independently before closing or changing that account.
  • Using the wrong database credentials. A restored database will not connect if wp-config.php still points to the old database name, user, or password.
  • Replacing URLs without accounting for serialized data. Use a serialization-aware approach for WordPress URL changes.
  • Assuming an automated transfer covers DNS and mail. Review the actual transfer settings and the records and routing your services depend on.
  • Closing the old account before checking the destination. Verify the new site and relevant DNS and email behavior while you still have access to the source.
