First identify which cloud provider holds the account: “lifetime” describes a plan, not a universal export process. Check that provider’s current download or export instructions, then save the resulting files to an external drive and verify the copy. The steps below explain what to check and give provider-specific examples for Google and OneDrive.
Before you start, identify what the account can export
Confirm the provider and the account you want to preserve. Decide which folders, photos, shared files, and other data are in scope. A lifetime plan does not, by itself, establish what the account includes or whether every type of data can be exported. Check the provider’s current instructions for account-specific limits.
Estimate how much data you need to save and make sure the computer and external drive have enough available space. The account size and data volume determine the capacity you need; there is no single drive size that fits every account. An external hard drive or external SSD can serve as the destination, provided it works with your computer and has enough room for the downloaded files.
Choose an export or sync method
Use the cloud provider’s own export or download route when it offers one. A provider-created export is an archive prepared for download; desktop sync is a different route and may leave some files online-only rather than storing them on the computer. Do not assume that steps for one service apply to another.

Google: create and download a Google Takeout archive
Google Takeout lets you select products to include, choose ZIP or TGZ format, and set a maximum archive size. If the export exceeds that limit, Google splits it into multiple archives, so download every part before treating the backup as complete. Google also cautions that the archive may not include changes made between the export request and archive creation. See Google’s Download your data instructions for the current process and options.
Google advises storing the downloaded data somewhere safe with enough space. Downloading through Takeout does not delete the data from Google’s servers, according to Google’s guidance. That statement applies to Google Takeout; check another provider’s terms and behavior rather than assuming the same result.

OneDrive: make sure synced files are downloaded
With OneDrive Files On-Demand, a file visible in File Explorer may be online-only and may not occupy local disk space. A cloud icon indicates an online-only file, not proof of a local backup. In OneDrive, use Always keep on this device for selected items to download them. Microsoft also offers a Download all files setting for the OneDrive folder; this uses local disk space. Wait for the files you need to become available locally before copying them to the external drive. Simply seeing an online-only placeholder in the file browser is not enough.

Copy the downloaded files to the external drive

Connect the external drive and confirm it appears on your computer. Check its available space against the size of the data you plan to copy.

Copy the downloaded export or locally available files to the drive. For Google Takeout, include all archive parts if Google split the export. For OneDrive, copy only after the required online-only files have downloaded.

Open the external drive in your file browser and browse to the destination folder to confirm the files appear there. Microsoft recommends this check in its instructions for moving files with an external storage device. A visual check is a useful basic safeguard, but it does not prove every file is intact.

Use your computer’s safe-eject option before disconnecting the drive. Microsoft’s instructions describe ejecting the external storage device after copying.

Keep the cloud copy until you have checked the drive
Do not remove the original cloud data just because a copy operation has finished. Browse the destination and confirm the expected files and archive parts are present. For Google Takeout, Google says downloading does not delete data from its servers; that assurance should not be generalized to other providers or to actions such as syncing or deleting files. Consult the provider’s own guidance before changing or removing cloud data.
