Samsung Cloud is the quickest built-in option for supported categories; Smart Switch can make a local copy to a computer or, where supported, external storage. A backup is a prudent precaution, not a stated requirement for every update.
Back up with Samsung Cloud
Samsung’s instructions, updated September 10, 2026, give this path: Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data. Menu names and available categories can differ by Fold model, software version, country, and carrier, so use the options displayed on your phone. Samsung’s Samsung Cloud guidance recommends Wi-Fi; mobile-data charges may apply if you use cellular data.
- Connect your Fold to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup.
- Under Samsung Cloud, tap Back up data.
- Select the categories you want to save, then tap Back up now.
- Wait for the process to finish and tap Done. Check the displayed status or backup time before starting the update.
Samsung Cloud can save supported items such as call and message history, device-saved contacts and calendar entries, selected settings, home-screen layout, Samsung app settings, and voice recordings. It is not a complete copy of everything on the phone: supported items vary by model and OS, and Samsung says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up through this service. Review the category list on your own device rather than assuming a particular app or file is included.
To enable automatic backup, select categories on the backup screen. Samsung says automatic backup requires the phone to be charging, its screen to be off, and Wi-Fi to be connected; for a backup immediately before updating, use Back up now and verify completion.

Make a local copy with Smart Switch
If you want a copy outside Samsung Cloud, Smart Switch can back up and restore data with the phone connected to a computer. Samsung Australia also documents backup to an SD card or USB storage. That guidance applies to Australian products; routes, supported models, and connection requirements may vary elsewhere. Check your Fold’s Smart Switch options and the instructions for your region before relying on removable storage.
- Computer: Use Samsung Smart Switch on a PC or Mac and connect the phone as prompted. Samsung’s cited regional guidance documents computer backup; follow the current prompts for your device and software.
- SD card or USB storage: Use this only if the option appears for your model and you have compatible storage and a supported connection. Do not assume every USB-C drive or adapter will work.
For the applicable Australian instructions, see Samsung Australia’s Smart Switch backup guide. Smart Switch can save selected data, but these sources do not establish that it creates a complete image of every Fold, app, or app’s data.

Check Google and app-based backups separately
Google account backup, account synchronization, and services such as Google Drive or OneDrive may protect particular categories or files, but signing in to a service is not proof that every item on the phone has been backed up. Samsung’s regional guides list Google among backup options, while its transfer guidance explains that signing in to cloud-storage services gives access to files stored there. Check the relevant app or account for a completed sync or upload, especially for photos and documents that are not included in the backup you selected.
Samsung’s general backup overview covers the Galaxy Z Fold series and names Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud, and Google Drive, but it is specific to the Gulf region. See Samsung Gulf’s backup overview; exact availability can vary by location and device.

Final checks before installing the update
- Confirm Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch reports that the backup completed, and note its latest time or status.
- Verify that the categories you care about were selected and are supported on your device.
- Check that important photos and documents are present in their own cloud service or local copy, and that any upload or sync has finished.
- Make sure you can access the Samsung, Google, or other accounts needed to reach or restore the saved material.
These are precautionary steps. Samsung’s general support material includes operating-system updates among situations in which data loss may occur, but does not state that every update erases data or requires a backup. For update and transfer screens, Samsung notes that prompts can differ with the source device, software version, and settings. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 transfer guide addresses those variations.
