To avoid unexpected cruise costs, review the full booking terms for your exact sailing, budget for recurring charges and the add-ons you plan to use, check your mobile carrier’s ship-at-sea rates, and monitor your onboard account. Cruise fares do not include every service or purchase by default, and inclusions vary by line, fare, ship, and cabin category.

What extra costs should you budget for on a cruise?

Start with your booking invoice and the cruise line’s current terms—not just the advertised fare. Check whether each item below is included, optional, prepaid, or charged to your onboard account.

  • Daily gratuities or service charges: These may recur for each guest and may be separate from gratuities attached to individual purchases.
  • Drinks, dining, and onboard services: Some beverages, specialty dining, premium experiences, nursery care, spa services, and salon services may cost extra. Royal Caribbean lists examples, but some suite categories receive selected benefits; check the terms for your fare and ship. Royal Caribbean’s fare-inclusions FAQ describes its line-specific policy.
  • Internet: Ship Wi-Fi is commonly an extra purchase. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) says internet charges are billed to the onboard account. Royal Caribbean says its VOOM pricing varies by package and device count, and recommends booking before the cruise for its biggest discount relative to onboard pricing. Neither policy establishes a universal Wi-Fi price or means it is included on every sailing. NCL’s FAQ and Royal Caribbean’s Wi-Fi FAQ give line-specific details.
  • Shore excursions: Read cancellation deadlines and refund terms for each activity. Late cancellation may leave you responsible for the cost.
  • Mobile roaming: Your home carrier may bill for shipboard cellular use separately from the cruise line’s charges. Background data, received texts, or calls sent to voicemail can generate usage, even if you do not deliberately place a call.

How do cruise gratuities and service charges work?

Daily service charges can be posted per guest per day, while additional gratuities or service charges may apply to particular purchases. The rates below are examples of published line policies, not industry-wide rates; the amount that applies to you depends on current policy and your booking.

Cruise line Published daily amount Important qualification
Royal Caribbean $18.50 per guest per day for nonsuite accommodations; $21 per guest per day for suites Amounts listed in the company’s FAQ checked in 2026. The same FAQ describes automatic gratuities on certain beverage, dining, room-service, minibar, spa, and salon purchases. Confirm current rates and applicability for your booking. Royal Caribbean gratuity policy.
Norwegian Cruise Line $20 per guest per day for Club Balcony Suite and below; $25 per guest per day for The Haven and Suites NCL’s published policy specifies bookings made on or after January 1, 2023, and says prepayment is available. It also lists a 4.275% Pre Paid Service Charge GET Tax for guests sailing to Hawaii. Check your invoice and current policy for applicability. NCL’s service-charge policy.

These figures can change, and a promotion or package may affect what you owe. Check whether charges are already prepaid or included before budgeting them again. For Royal Caribbean, its FAQ explains that service gratuities may be prepaid or charged to the onboard account when not prepaid; confirm the terms of your own booking.

How can you prevent phone roaming charges at sea?

A phone may connect automatically to a ship’s maritime network in international waters. Carnival says the shipboard network can generate charges for background data, incoming texts, and calls that reach voicemail; the home carrier sets the rates and bills the usage. NCL likewise directs passengers to their carrier for package and rate details. Carnival’s mobile-phone guidance and NCL’s FAQ explain their respective policies.

  1. Before sailing, contact your mobile carrier. Ask whether it offers cruise coverage, which ship networks or itineraries qualify, the rates for calls, texts, and data, and when charges will appear on your bill. Do not assume a domestic unlimited plan includes shipboard roaming.
  2. Choose how you will connect. Compare your carrier’s eligible coverage and pricing with the cruise line’s Wi-Fi package. The carrier sets cellular roaming rates; the cruise line sets its own Wi-Fi pricing.
  3. If avoiding cellular use, turn on airplane mode and then re-enable Wi-Fi. Carnival recommends airplane mode to prevent cellular use while allowing Wi-Fi. Phone settings vary, so verify that cellular service remains off before relying on this setup.
  4. Check the phone’s status while onboard. Keep cellular roaming off if you do not need it, and make sure the phone has not reconnected to a ship network.

If a cellular charge appears after the cruise, contact the home carrier that billed it. Carnival says cellular billing disputes should be handled with the carrier.

Should you buy ship Wi-Fi or use cellular service?

There is no single best option for every sailing: compare the carrier’s coverage and rates with the ship’s current Wi-Fi price and package terms. If you expect to use ship Wi-Fi, check the price before departure and compare the package with the devices and access you actually need. Royal Caribbean says its VOOM price varies with device count and package, and that advance purchase gives its biggest discount relative to onboard pricing. Treat that as Royal Caribbean’s policy, not a guarantee that pre-purchase is cheaper on every line or sailing. NCL says internet charges go to the onboard account. NCL’s internet FAQ and Royal Caribbean’s Wi-Fi FAQ provide current line-specific information.

How can you avoid unexpected excursion costs?

Read the cancellation deadline and refund conditions for the exact excursion before booking. Carnival describes cancellation charges and says its Vacation Protection Plan can cover eligible nonrefundable shore-excursion cancellation charges; eligibility and exclusions depend on current plan terms. NCL describes cases where late cancellation results in a full charge. Check the activity’s own terms and any protection plan wording before relying on a refund. Carnival’s shore-excursion FAQ and NCL’s shore-excursion terms set out their respective policies.

How can you keep the onboard account under control?

Many onboard purchases are charged to the cruise account, so check its activity during the trip rather than waiting until departure. Retain receipts and ask guest services promptly about entries you do not recognize. The exact account interface and transaction timing vary by line.

Payment authorization and final settlement practices vary by cruise line and bank. NCL advises against using a debit card as the onboard payment method; ask your cruise line and card issuer how transactions are handled before choosing a payment method. Carnival says its onboard account is settled with the guest’s bank when the cruise returns, but that does not establish a universal hold amount or release time. NCL’s FAQ and Carnival’s onboard-account guidance cover their line-specific information.
