Before paying for an online course, write down exactly what it promises—skills, a credential, a job, income, or transferable credits—and verify each important claim with someone other than the seller. Check accreditation through official U.S. resources, ask intended employers or schools whether they recognize the credential, investigate the provider, and read the full price and cancellation terms. Pressure to enroll quickly, guaranteed income, and success stories that cannot be substantiated are reasons to pause.
Start by separating what the course promises
A course can make several different claims at once. Evaluate each separately rather than assuming that a convincing sales page proves them all.
- Instruction: What skills or subject matter does the curriculum actually cover? Who teaches it, and what access do students have to instructors?
- Credential: What certificate or degree will you receive, and who awards it? If it is meant to support further study or employment, who recognizes it?
- Outcome: Does the seller promise or imply a job, income, employer connections, externships, or transferable credits? Ask for specifics and supporting evidence in writing.
A course is not automatically a scam because it is online or unaccredited. The important question is whether it can deliver the particular learning or recognition you need—and whether its claims are supported.
How to check accreditation and credentials
Do not rely on a school’s own website, a familiar-sounding institution name, or a .edu address as proof that accreditation is recognized. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking institutions and accreditors through official resources, including College Navigator and the U.S. Department of Education’s accreditor information.

Then contact the institution or employer that matters to you. Ask a receiving school whether it will accept the credits, or ask a prospective employer whether it recognizes the credential for the role you want. Accreditation by itself does not guarantee acceptance by every school or employer.
Consider how the credential is earned, too. FTC guidance flags programs that require little or no substantial coursework, testing, or instructor interaction, and promises of a degree in an implausibly short time. A credential should represent actual learning, not just payment.

Investigate the provider and its sales claims
Search the company and program name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” Check relevant state authorities, and look beyond testimonials selected by the seller. The FTC warns that fabricated profiles and misleading success stories can appear in reviews; finding no complaints is not proof that a provider is honest.
For job-placement, externship, hiring-partnership, or earnings claims, ask how the figures were calculated, which students were counted, and what date range they cover. Ask the provider to document any claimed employer relationship. Treat a success story as an individual example, not a prediction of your likely result.

FTC enforcement matters illustrate why these checks matter, but they do not establish that online training generally is fraudulent. In the Career Step matter, the FTC described allegations about job placement, career outcomes, externships, and hiring partnerships; its refund page says it sent 42,794 payments totaling more than $15.5 million to people who paid for online training programs. In its 2021 Online Trading Academy refund announcement, the FTC said its complaint alleged false or unfounded earnings claims and described training programs costing as much as $50,000. That figure describes the programs in that matter, not a typical course price.
Recognize pressure and unrealistic income promises
Be wary of guaranteed income, claims that a “proven system” will ensure success, or promises of large returns for little work. These are especially concerning when paired with vague evidence or a request to buy more coaching to unlock the promised results.

A deadline, limited-time offer, or warning that you will miss out is not a reason to skip verification. The FTC advises people considering coaching offers to take time, talk with someone they trust, and get an independent second opinion. A legitimate opportunity should withstand a pause while you check its claims.

Read the refund and cancellation conditions as written before buying. The FTC’s reviewed guidance does not establish one universal refund rule for every course or transaction, so do not assume that a refund will be available simply because a course disappoints you. Keep copies of the offer, contract, payment records, and any written promises.
A practical check before you enroll
- Write down the promises. Separate instruction, credential, and employment or income claims. Ask the seller to put material details in writing.
- Verify recognition. Check the institution and accreditor through official U.S. resources; ask the employer or receiving school you care about whether it recognizes the credential or credits.
- Research independently. Search the provider and program, review independent sources, and check relevant state authorities. Do not treat either glowing testimonials or an absence of complaints as conclusive.
- Ask for evidence. For outcome claims, request the method, student group, and date range behind the numbers, and documentation for claimed partnerships.
- Take time to decide. If the seller insists you must act immediately, pause and seek a second opinion before paying.
- Review the whole commitment. Confirm total cost, financing or recurring charges, access period, what is included, and the written refund and cancellation terms.
What to do if you suspect a scam in the United States
The FTC directs consumers to report suspected business-offer or coaching scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. It also suggests contacting the attorney general’s office in your state and in the state where the promoter is based. Reporting channels and consumer rights vary by country; these steps are U.S.-specific, not international legal advice.
