To avoid a scam, verify the actual PS5 Pro before paying: check the seller and return terms, get a fresh video or inspect the console in person, confirm its serial number is intact and it can connect to PlayStation services, and pay through a method with a dispute process. Keep the transaction on-platform when required for buyer protection. A console that powers on may still be damaged or unable to use PlayStation services.
This guide focuses on US buying and dispute options. Sony’s warranty information cited here applies to the US and Canada; buyers elsewhere should check local consumer-protection rules and warranty terms.
Before you contact the seller: check the listing and protections
Compare the listing’s actual photos, condition description, included items, seller history, and return terms. Stock photos alone, unusually low prices without a credible explanation, vague answers, or pressure to act quickly are reasons to slow down. There is no reliable price threshold that proves a listing is a scam; value depends on condition, bundle, region, and the protections you retain.
Before paying, read the marketplace’s current rules for this exact sale. Confirm who handles a dispute, whether the protection applies to a private seller and used console, what returns are allowed, and the deadline to open a claim. Marketplace coverage varies, so do not assume a purchase is protected just because it was arranged on a marketplace.

- Keep messages and payment on the platform if that is required to preserve its buyer protection.
- Use a payment method with a dispute process, and check its actual terms. The US Federal Trade Commission recommends safer options such as credit cards or secure payment systems with buyer protection.
- Do not send gift card codes, cryptocurrency, cash reload cards, or wire transfers to an unknown seller; the FTC warns these payments can be difficult to recover.
- Ask questions in writing and save the answers, listing, and any photos or videos.

Ask for evidence of the actual console
Request a new video of the unit being sold, rather than promotional footage or a clip that could show a different console. PlayStation’s used-product guidance says: “Ask them to show the product powering on and connecting to the internet (if relevant).” Ask the seller to show the console’s ports and buttons and, if a Disc Drive is included, demonstrate it as well. As an extra practical check, request a one-time detail in the video, such as a written phrase or the date; that helps connect the clip to the listing but is not an official Sony requirement.

Ask for the model information, a clear inventory of included accessories, and the original receipt if available. You can request the serial number, but avoid having the seller publish the full number publicly; compare it with the console in person before buying. A receipt may help establish purchase history, but it does not by itself prove that a warranty will transfer to you.
Inspect and test it before handing over money
Whenever possible, meet where you can inspect the actual console. Sony advises checking a used PlayStation product in person because a video cannot reveal every issue, including image quality, overheating, and physical damage. Compare the item with the listing and look for cracks, missing covers, signs of liquid or impact damage, suspicious modifications, broken seals, or an altered, defaced, or removed serial number.

- Check the exterior and identity. Compare the console and model information with the listing. Walk away if the serial number is missing or damaged, or if seals appear broken and the seller cannot explain why.
- Power it on and inspect the picture. Connect it to a display and check that the image is stable. Test buttons and ports, listen for unusual fan noise, and watch for shutdowns or overheating during a reasonable test.
- Check internet and PlayStation services. Connect the console to the internet and verify access to PlayStation services. Ask the seller to deactivate it and confirm they no longer have access. A seller’s assurance is weaker than checking access yourself.
- Confirm exactly what is included. Match the controller, cables, stand feet, and any other promised accessories against the listing. Test any optional drive the seller claims is part of the bundle.
- Record the sale. Get a receipt or written sale record naming the item, price, date, and seller. Save the listing and messages. For an online order, note the return and dispute deadlines as soon as you buy.
A console can turn on and still be in poor condition or barred from online services. Sony says a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Its used-product checklist and guidance are at playstation.com/en-us/support/store/buying-guide-faq/.
Know what a PS5 Pro listing should include
The PS5 Pro is an all-digital, 2 TB console and does not include a disc drive. PlayStation identifies a compatible removable Disc Drive sold separately; an internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup. If you need physical games or discs, confirm that the listing includes the drive and test it. Do not treat a correctly described digital-only console as defective just because it lacks a drive.

Models and availability can vary by region, so verify the exact console and drive compatibility against PlayStation’s current product information at playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-pro-install-disc-drive/. An M.2 SSD is optional storage expansion, not a requirement for buying safely; do not assume an included third-party drive is guaranteed to work.

The guide is US-specific; do not assume that its terms describe statutory rights or warranty coverage in every country.

Sony’s cited US/Canada PS5 warranty describes coverage for the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase date and requires valid proof of purchase for warranty service. It excludes products sold and clearly marked “AS IS” or with faults. That language does not establish that coverage transfers to a later buyer. Before buying, check the applicable regional policy, any original receipt, and the seller’s written return terms. Sony’s warranty page is playstation.com/en-us/legal/warranties/ps5/.
Walk away if you see these warning signs
- The seller insists on taking payment off-platform while claiming marketplace protection still applies.
- The seller refuses a current test video, reasonable inspection, proof that they possess the console, or clear answers about condition and returns.
- The serial number is missing or damaged, seals look broken without explanation, or the console cannot connect to PlayStation services.
- The seller rushes you or requests gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a wire transfer.
- The price seems implausibly low and the seller cannot give a credible reason.
- The seller cannot explain what is included, where the console came from, or why a receipt or warranty evidence is unavailable.
Missing paperwork alone does not prove fraud, but it reduces your ability to verify the purchase and may limit your recourse. Treat that uncertainty as a reason to reconsider the transaction and its price, not as proof that the console is stolen.
If the purchase goes wrong
- Contact the seller promptly and explain the problem in writing.
- Open a marketplace claim before its deadline, following the platform’s process.
- Preserve the listing, messages, receipt, tracking information, and test video.
- If you paid by card, contact the issuer and ask about disputing the transaction under its rules.
- In the US, report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and contact your state attorney general. Outside the US, use your local consumer agency and payment provider.
When weighing two listings, compare test evidence, seller history, serial and seal condition, service access, receipt and applicable warranty, return and dispute coverage, payment safety, included accessories, and total cost against a new or certified-refurbished option. A lower asking price is not a bargain if you give up protections or cannot verify the console.
