Set your shopping list and maximum total spend before opening Amazon. During a sale, buy only items you already planned to purchase, compare the exact product’s all-in price and terms, and treat countdowns or discount labels as prompts to check—not reasons to buy.
Make a plan before you browse
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends making a list and budget because having a plan can make impulse purchases less tempting. That is practical guidance, not a guarantee that a particular tactic will prevent overspending.
- Write down what you actually need. Name the product and, where relevant, its model, size, or configuration. Avoid browsing broad categories without a specific purpose.
- Set a firm total-spend limit. Choose an amount that fits your budget after upcoming bills and savings priorities. Count the full order cost, not just the displayed item price.
- Set a target price if you have one. A target gives you a basis for judging the offer. Decide in advance whether any exceptions are allowed; a discount by itself is not a good reason to add an item.
You do not need to buy a budgeting tool to do this. A notes app, scrap paper, or a budget planner notebook can hold your list and limit.
Check whether a deal is good for you
A discount is not a saving if you did not want or budget for the product. For an item on your list, check the offer against the exact product and the complete cost.

- Match the product. Check the manufacturer, model number, and relevant size, color, or configuration. Similar-looking products may have different specifications, so compare the same item across sellers.
- Calculate the all-in price. Include shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees. A lower displayed price may not mean a lower final cost.
- Read the whole listing. Check the product description and whether the deal requires purchasing add-ons you do not want. Note whether the item is refurbished or close-out merchandise.
- Review return terms. Sale or clearance products can have different return or refund conditions. Check the policy before ordering rather than assuming it matches the terms for other items.
The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends comparison shopping, checking the full price and deal conditions, and reviewing return policies. Comparison sites can help locate sellers or provide price alerts, but check whether a service follows the exact model and configuration, includes shipping and other costs, and explains how it ranks merchants. Some comparison-shopping sites may rank sellers based on compensation rather than neutrality.
Understand Amazon’s reference-price labels
Amazon says its “Typical” or “Was” Price is the median price customers paid on Amazon over the previous 90 days, excluding limited-time deal prices. Amazon also says it uses validated reference prices. That describes Amazon’s stated pricing method; it does not establish that an offer is the lowest price elsewhere or the best price for you. Compare the exact product with other sellers and consider its full cost and terms.

Amazon’s company-authored explanation of its approach to deals and reference prices also reports that customers worldwide saved more than $50 billion on Amazon deals and coupons over 2025. That is a company-reported aggregate, not evidence that an individual shopper saved money on a particular purchase.
Respond to countdowns and sale pressure with a check
A timer or “limited time” message can make a purchase feel urgent. The FTC’s 2022 staff report, Bringing Dark Patterns to Light, describes examples such as baseless countdowns, false limited-time messages, fake sale prices, tactics that hinder comparison, items added to a basket, and hidden costs. The report does not mean every countdown or sale is false, and it is not evidence that a particular Amazon listing is deceptive. Use urgency as a reason to verify the actual deadline, price, total, and terms.

If an unplanned item catches your attention, close the listing or step away and reconsider it later. This is a practical pause, not a proven savings formula; do not let an arbitrary timer dictate your decision.
Use sale alerts and shopping features selectively
Amazon’s sale-event guidance describes notifications, Alexa reminders and purchase features, saved-item alerts, and personalized recommendations as ways to find deals. These can help you track a planned purchase, but they can also keep offers in view. If your priority is avoiding unplanned spending, limit deal alerts to items on your list and avoid enabling automatic purchase features.

Amazon’s guidance for Prime Day deals is tied to a specific sale event. Event dates, available features, and deal terms can change, so check the current information in your account and the offer itself rather than assuming a feature or deadline is the same for every event.

- Compare the cart with your list and cap. Remove anything that was not planned or that takes the order over your limit.
- Inspect each line. Confirm the quantity, selected options, add-ons, and any subscription or preselected choice. Check for charges that appeared late in checkout.
- Confirm delivery and return terms. Make sure the shipping promise and sale-item return policy are acceptable before placing the order.
- Keep the order details. Save what you ordered, the date and amount, the seller’s policy, and the shipping promise. The FTC recommends keeping these records in case you need them.
