To judge whether an online discount is real and a third-party seller is safe, compare the exact product and delivered price, investigate the seller and listing terms, and choose a payment method that gives you a way to dispute a problem. A very low price is a warning to check more carefully—not proof of fraud. No single signal, including reviews, HTTPS, or a marketplace listing, establishes that an offer is genuine.

How to tell whether an online deal is real

Start by checking whether the offers are actually for the same item. A large percentage off can be misleading if the product is a different model, condition, size, color, or quantity—or if extra costs erase the apparent savings.

Compare the exact product and total cost

  • Record the manufacturer and model number, then compare those details across reputable sellers.
  • Check whether each item is new, used, refurbished, vintage, or close-out, and whether the quantity or included accessories match.
  • Compare the delivered total, including shipping, handling, taxes, and other fees—not just the advertised price.
  • Check whether the offer requires a membership or bundle you do not want.

Comparison sites can help, but their results may be biased or may rank sellers that pay them. Consider where the comparison comes from rather than treating its rankings as a guarantee.

Treat unusually low branded prices as a reason to pause

The FTC warns that unusually low prices may lead to counterfeit, misrepresented, or undelivered goods. Its guidance also identifies unusually low prices on branded merchandise as activity shoppers may report through marketplaces. A low price alone does not prove the item is counterfeit, stolen, or part of a scam; use it as a prompt to verify the offer. See the FTC’s online shopping guidance and its business guidance on advertising and marketing online.

How to check a third-party seller and listing

Look beyond the product page

Search the seller’s name with terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” If you found the offer through an ad, search the exact site or URL too. Look for information beyond the seller’s own page: a polished listing or copied brand logo is not proof of authenticity.

Read the complete description and sale conditions. Check who is selling the item, how to contact them, what the shipping promise is, and whether the return policy changes for sale or clearance items. Confirm the return window, who pays return shipping, and whether restocking fees apply.

Use reviews and site security as limited clues

Compare reviews across sources, examine reviewer history and timing, and do not rely on star ratings alone. Reviews can be fake or manipulated, and the FTC notes that authenticity can be difficult to determine from appearance alone. HTTPS encrypts a transaction between your browser and a site; it does not establish that the site or seller is genuine.

Understand marketplace seller disclosures

Under the INFORM Consumers Act, marketplaces must disclose contact information for many third-party sellers who meet the law’s high-volume thresholds. The requirement does not necessarily apply to every seller, so the presence or absence of a particular disclosure is not a universal legitimacy test. The FTC’s INFORM Consumers Act guidance explains the requirements and marketplace reporting options; it does not certify individual sellers.

The FTC says shoppers can report marketplace activity such as an apparently counterfeit item, an item that differs materially from the order or listing, unexpected use or deterioration, an expired item, or branded merchandise offered at an unusually low price. Use the marketplace’s suspicious-activity reporting process when a listing raises these concerns.

How to pay more safely—and what to do if something goes wrong

Choose a payment method with dispute options

When possible, pay by credit card. FTC consumer guidance says a card may give you a way to dispute a charge for merchandise that was not received, was the wrong item, or was defective. A dispute is not a guaranteed refund. Act promptly: for the specified billing-error rights, contact the card issuer and send a letter that arrives within 60 days of the first statement showing the error. Read the FTC’s online shopping guidance for details.

Visa Physical Gift Card $200 (plus $6.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

Do not pay an online seller who insists on gift cards, a wire transfer, a payment app, or cryptocurrency. The FTC warns that recovering money sent this way can be difficult.

Keep records and respond promptly

Save the product listing, seller name and website, order details, promised shipping date, return terms, messages, and payment records. If the purchase goes wrong, first try to resolve it with the seller or marketplace, then contact your payment provider about a dispute. Report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Keeping records helps you explain what was offered, what you received, and when you raised the issue.

What sale-price and fee rules do—and do not—cover

FTC business guidance says truthfulness standards apply to price comparisons and sale-price claims. It describes bait-and-switch as advertising a product the business does not intend to sell in order to sell something else, usually at a higher price. These are general standards, not a formula consumers can use to prove that an individual sale is fake. State and local requirements may also apply.

The FTC Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees took effect May 12, 2025, but it is not a general rule for ordinary retail products. It covers businesses selling or advertising live-event tickets and short-term lodging, including third-party platforms and resellers. For covered offers, it requires upfront total-price display, with exclusions such as taxes, shipping, and optional add-ons; the final amount must be disclosed before payment. See the FTC’s questions and answers about the Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees.
