To reduce eye strain while playing Pokémon, take a 20-second look at something about 20 feet away every 20 minutes, and take a longer screen-free break at least once an hour. Keep the display comfortable for the room, reduce reflections, blink fully, and stop if your eyes feel tired or sore. These steps may ease temporary discomfort, but they cannot guarantee you will avoid symptoms.
Why long gaming sessions can make your eyes feel tired
Extended near-screen viewing can contribute to dry or irritated eyes, blurry vision, watery eyes, and headaches. Concentrating on a game can also reduce how often you blink, while glare, squinting, or a display that feels too bright for the room can add discomfort. These symptoms are not, by themselves, proof of permanent eye damage.
General screen-use guidance applies whether you are playing Pokémon on a handheld console or a TV. The advice below is not specific to any one Pokémon game, and no particular game’s text-size or accessibility options are assumed.
Use two kinds of breaks
Look into the distance every 20 minutes
Use the 20-20-20 habit: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends this approach, as does the American Academy of Ophthalmology. CDC vision-health guidance and AAO computer-use advice explain the recommendation.

Leave the screen for a longer pause at least hourly
A brief distance break is not a substitute for stepping away from play. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Health and Safety Information says to take a break of 10 to 15 minutes at least once an hour. That instruction is for Switch 2; check the current safety information for your region and console model. Stop sooner if discomfort starts. Nintendo’s manuals and safety information are the appropriate reference for model-specific guidance.
A simple timer can remind a child to pause, but a phone alarm works just as well. HealthyChildren.org notes that a timer may help children remember breaks.

Make the screen comfortable for how you play
Handheld or tabletop Switch
Adjust brightness to a comfortable level for the room rather than turning it up as high as possible. On Nintendo Switch, hold the HOME Button for at least one second to open Quick Settings, or go to System Settings > Screen Brightness. Auto-brightness is available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED, but not Switch Lite; the brightness control applies in handheld and tabletop modes. See Nintendo’s brightness instructions.
Avoid leaning close or squinting to make out text. Enlarge text if the device or game allows it, and hold the screen at a comfortable distance.

Playing on a TV
Sit comfortably at a distance suited to the TV size and your room. HealthyChildren.org offers a practical distance mnemonic of about 1 foot for a phone, 2 feet for a desktop or laptop, and 10 feet for a TV. Treat these as rules of thumb, not universal clinical thresholds; a suitable TV distance depends on the screen and setup. HealthyChildren.org’s screen-use guidance also advises positioning screens at or below eye level.
Reduce reflections from windows and lamps, and avoid playing in a dark room with a glaring screen. The CDC recommends reducing outside glare and adjusting brightness and contrast; pediatric guidance likewise advises preventing direct light from reflecting into the display. Respond to symptoms rather than pushing through
Blink fully during breaks, especially if your eyes feel dry. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says artificial tears can help refresh dry eyes, but they are not necessary for everyone and do not replace breaks. If your eyes become tired or sore, stop playing. Nintendo advises consulting a doctor if symptoms persist; seek advice from a clinician or eye-care professional for symptoms that continue, feel severe, or worry you.

Special blue-light-blocking glasses are not a necessary solution for Pokémon gaming. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says small amounts of blue light from screens have not been shown to harm the eyes and does not recommend special blue-light eyewear for computer use because evidence has not shown that it improves digital eye-strain symptoms. If late-night gaming interferes with sleep, reducing evening screen time or using a nighttime display setting may help with sleep; that is not an eye-strain treatment.
