To reduce the chance of a size mismatch, check the chart for the exact item and compare the right kind of measurements: your body measurements against a body-size chart, or a similar garment you own against finished-garment measurements. For color, treat product photos as an estimate—lighting, photography and screens can change how a shade appears. Before checkout, also check the seller’s delivery and return terms so you know your options if the item is not right.
How do I choose the right size online?
Start with the size chart attached to the exact product and style, not a general chart or a size you bought from the same brand before. UNIQLO’s US and Singapore customer-service guidance explains that measurements can vary with a product’s design, fit and fabric, and that products may have their own charts (UNIQLO US: How to Measure; UNIQLO Singapore: Product Measurement Guidelines). These are retailer-specific examples, not universal sizing rules.
- Open the chart for the selected item. Check that it applies to the style you intend to buy, then note whether it lists body measurements or garment measurements.
- Use the matching kind of measurement. For a body-size chart, measure your body and compare those figures with the chart. For finished-garment measurements, lay a similar item you own flat and compare corresponding dimensions, such as chest width, body length, waist or inseam when listed.
- Consider the intended fit and construction. If the listing describes the garment as slim, regular or oversized, use that information alongside the relevant dimensions. Fabric and design can affect how a garment fits.
- Ask the seller if the listing leaves an important question unresolved. This is especially useful when the chart’s measurement method or the fit of a particular style is unclear.
A flexible measuring tape can help you take body measurements or compare garments, but it does not replace the item’s own chart. UNIQLO’s guidance describes measurement methods; follow the instructions for the specific product rather than assuming every retailer measures the same way.
Body measurements and garment measurements are not interchangeable
A body chart describes the person the garment is intended to fit. A finished-garment chart describes the garment itself. A garment’s chest circumference, for example, is not a direct substitute for your body’s chest circumference: the garment needs room for the body, and the amount depends on its cut and intended fit. Compare like with like instead of choosing a size by matching two numbers that describe different things.

For finished-garment figures, compare the listing’s measurement with the same measurement taken from a similar garment you already own. If the seller provides a flat width rather than a circumference, make sure your comparison uses that same convention. Follow the retailer’s own measurement instructions where available; UNIQLO’s product guidance is an example, not a standard that every brand follows.
Why can an item’s color look different in person?
A product image cannot guarantee an exact real-world color match. Photography and lighting affect the image, while display settings and viewing conditions affect how it appears on your screen. T-Shirt.ca’s customer-support article describes these sources of variation as seller guidance; it should not be treated as an independent guarantee about every retailer or display (T-Shirt.ca: How accurate are the garment colours on your website?).

- Look at all the product views the seller provides, and read the color name and description.
- If a close shade match matters, ask the seller how the color is represented and whether they can clarify the shade. The answer may still not predict exactly how it will look in your room or on your device.
- Do not assume that changing your screen settings will reveal the item’s exact color. Different devices and lighting conditions can still produce different impressions.
T-Shirt.ca suggests ordering a sample when precise matching matters, but a sample may not be available or practical for the product you are considering.

Returns are a fallback if the item is wrong for you, not evidence that the fit or color will match. The Federal Trade Commission advises online shoppers: “Before you buy something online, know when it’ll ship and what to do if you want to return it.” Its guidance also notes that stores have different return rules and deadlines (FTC: What to know before you buy something online).

- Find the return deadline and whether return shipping or restocking costs apply.
- Check whether the rules differ for the seller or the particular item.
- Save the order confirmation and the listing details showing the size and color you selected.
