In the Teams desktop app, you can automatically turn off both your camera and microphone when your screen locks. Open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, enable Turn off my camera and mic when my screen locks, then restart Teams. This setting is tied to screen locking; it is not a universal setting to join every meeting with both devices off.
Set Teams to turn off your camera and mic when your screen locks
- In the Teams desktop app, select Settings and more (the ellipsis), then select Settings.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn on Turn off my camera and mic when my screen locks.
- Restart Teams for the setting to take effect.
Microsoft documents this option as turning off both devices when the screen locks. It does not establish an automatic camera-and-mic-off preference for every meeting. Microsoft’s mic guidance also notes that some microphone capabilities may be unavailable because of meeting settings or IT-admin policies.
Choose your camera and mic state before joining a meeting
On the pre-join screen, switch the camera and microphone off individually before selecting Join. Microsoft says Teams remembers the microphone preference for future meetings; the cited instructions do not establish that the camera-off choice is remembered in the same way. These pre-join controls are separate from the screen-lock setting. Microsoft’s video guidance also covers using the Camera control during a meeting.
What other automatic and meeting-level controls do

Turn devices off or on during a meeting
Use the meeting toolbar’s microphone and camera controls to change their states during the call. The controls are available to participants, subject to meeting settings and any applicable admin policies. See Microsoft’s meeting-controls guide.

Teams’ screen-reader guidance covers choosing whether to join with video and audio on or off, along with keyboard controls during meetings. Shortcuts vary by context and platform, so consult the instructions for your client rather than assuming one shortcut works everywhere: Microsoft’s screen-reader instructions.
