Choose File History if you want recurring copies on an external drive or network location and a way to restore earlier versions. OneDrive sync alone is not the same as an independent historical backup.
Choose the backup method that fits your needs
| Option | Where copies go | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup with OneDrive | OneDrive cloud storage | Accessing supported folders across devices | Windows Backup’s guide does not establish that every sync action provides the same previous-version recovery as File History. |
| File History | An external drive or network location | Keeping recurring copies and restoring earlier versions | The destination must be connected or reachable for copies to be saved. |
Microsoft describes File History as “a Windows feature designed to automatically back up your personal files, such as documents, photos, and videos.” The choice is not strictly either-or: you can use cloud access and a separate historical backup for different kinds of protection.
Back up supported folders to OneDrive
Windows Backup is available in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its OneDrive folder workflow can sync selected Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music folders. The OneDrive-backed workflow requires a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft says a free personal Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage; more storage can be purchased. Work or school accounts do not work with the consumer-focused Windows Backup app. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup guide.
- Open Start, search for Windows Backup, and open the app. You can also go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup.
- Expand Folders.
- Switch on each supported folder you want to back up.
- Select Back up.
On some Windows 10 installations, the settings page may use older wording such as “Back up files.” Labels can vary by Windows build, so follow the equivalent folder-backup controls shown on your PC.

Understand OneDrive availability and sync
OneDrive Files On-Demand can show files in File Explorer without storing their contents on your PC. An online-only file needs an internet connection to be used like a local file. To keep a file available offline, right-click it in File Explorer and select Always keep on this device. Details are in Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guidance.
Sync is useful for access across devices, but changes such as deletions can also sync. If you need recovery from accidental changes or deletions, understand the recovery options available for your OneDrive account rather than treating sync by itself as a separate historical backup.

Automatically back up folders with File History
File History periodically saves copies of personal files to an external drive or network location and supports restoring earlier versions. Microsoft’s overview is at Backup and restore with File History.
- Connect an external drive, or make sure the network location you want to use is available.
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > File History.
- If prompted, select the destination drive or network location.
- Select Turn on.
Keep the selected destination connected or reachable so File History can save scheduled copies. A USB external hard drive is one option; a network location is an alternative. Choose enough available storage for the files you intend to protect, but the appropriate size depends on your collection.

Include a folder outside the standard libraries
File History’s documented automatic coverage is based on libraries. It includes standard Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music libraries, as well as custom libraries. If the folder you want is elsewhere, add it to a library first:
- In File Explorer, right-click the folder.
- Select Show more options > Include in library.
- Choose the appropriate library.
After adding the folder, check File History to confirm it is included in the files being backed up. Do not assume that File History automatically watches every arbitrary folder path without this setup.

Restore an earlier version of a file
File History can restore an earlier copy. Microsoft’s restore guidance is at Restore files or folders with File History.
- In File Explorer, navigate to the folder that contained the file.
- Right-click the folder and select Restore previous versions.
- Select the version you want to recover.
- Select Restore to replace the current version, or Restore to… to save the recovered copy somewhere else.
Replacing the current version cannot be undone, according to Microsoft. Use Restore to… if you want to inspect or preserve the older copy without overwriting the file currently in that folder.

- For OneDrive, return to Windows Backup and check the folder settings and displayed status.
- For File History, open its Control Panel page and confirm the selected destination and status; make sure the drive or network location remains reachable.
- Test recovery with a noncritical file so you know how to find and restore a saved copy.
These checks help confirm your setup; they do not guarantee that every file or recovery scenario is covered. Organizations may manage or restrict backup settings, particularly on work or school devices.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 feature instructions remain relevant to existing PCs, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Backup availability does not mean the operating system continues to receive security support. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
