Use one deliberate image pipeline: let your existing SEO plugin publish Open Graph tags, use the WordPress featured image as the normal source, and define a documented fallback for posts without one. A featured image appears in WordPress, but it does not automatically guarantee that Facebook, LinkedIn or another crawler will use that image. The page must contain a correct og:image value in its HTML head.
Featured image and og:image are different systems
A WordPress featured image (also called a post thumbnail) is content attached to a post. Your theme may display it in archives, templates and the article itself. Open Graph is metadata: tags such as og:title, og:url and og:image tell a social crawler what to show in a link preview.
The connection is configurable, not automatic. A theme or post type must support featured images, and a plugin or custom integration must print the chosen image URL in the page head. If no component emits og:image, or if two components emit conflicting tags, the social platform may select another image or none at all.
Choose the automation approach
Configure the SEO plugin you already use
Start here. Many SEO plugins already generate Open Graph metadata and expose social-image settings. Yoast’s documented preference order is a useful model: a manually selected social image takes precedence, followed by the featured image, a prominent image in the content, and then a configured default. Your installed plugin may use a different order, so read its current documentation and test the rendered HTML.

- Open the plugin’s social or Open Graph settings and enable metadata if it is disabled.
- Set a site-wide fallback image for posts with no usable image.
- Decide whether a post-level social image should override the featured image.
- Check settings for pages, custom post types and taxonomies separately; they may have independent defaults.
Add a dedicated metadata plugin
A dedicated Open Graph plugin is useful when your SEO stack does not produce tags or when you need generated branded cards. Documented WordPress.org examples differ: one selects the featured image, then content images and attachments, with branding as a fallback; another generates branded cards for posts without an image. Verify compatibility with your WordPress version, editor and theme before activation.
Do not install a second plugin simply because it has more settings. If your SEO plugin already emits tags, two producers can create duplicate or contradictory metadata. Configure one owner, or explicitly disable the competing output.
Use code for special rules
Code is appropriate when different post types need different image sizes, when a custom field should supply the image, or when the fallback must follow business rules. Yoast documents filters for changing or adding Open Graph images. Use the API supported by the version installed on your site; filter names and arguments should be confirmed against that version’s developer documentation.
Build a reliable image workflow
- Confirm featured-image support. In the editor, look for the Featured image panel. If it is absent, the post type may not support thumbnails or the theme may not expose the control. WordPress themes can register support and add custom image sizes.
- Choose one metadata owner. Identify which SEO or Open Graph component prints
og:image. Disable overlapping output rather than hoping crawlers choose the desired tag. - Define the fallback hierarchy. Decide what happens when a post has no featured image: a static brand image, the first suitable content image, an attachment, or a generated card. Record the order because plugins implement these choices differently.
- Set editorial rules. Require an image for selected post types, or allow the fallback for news, author pages and archives. If a manually selected social image is available, decide whether it overrides the featured image.
- Publish and inspect. View the public page source, search for
og:image, and verify that exactly one intended URL is present along with the other Open Graph fields. - Test every fallback case. Check a post with a social override, one with only a featured image, one with content images but no featured image, and one with no images at all.
Image dimensions, formats and accessibility
Do not treat one plugin’s generated-card dimensions as a universal social-platform requirement. The Simple Open Graphs listing describes automatically generated cards at 1200 × 630 pixels; that is a feature of that product, not a platform-wide standard established here. Check current guidance for each network you target and preview the actual result.

Use an image URL that is publicly reachable and served in a format your target crawler supports. Keep the source stable after publishing; changing or replacing the file at the same URL can leave a platform showing an older cached asset. Open Graph image metadata is separate from the image’s visible WordPress caption and alt text, so configure accessibility text in the relevant plugin or template as well.
How to make WordPress use the featured image when sharing a link
Enable Open Graph output in your existing SEO plugin, leave the post’s social-image field empty unless you need an override, and assign a featured image. The plugin should then place that image’s absolute URL in og:image. Open the page source rather than relying only on the editor preview: the source is what a crawler receives.
If the source contains a different URL, inspect the plugin’s documented hierarchy. A manually selected social image commonly outranks the featured image. If there are two og:image tags, find the second metadata producer and turn off its Open Graph feature or remove its hook.

- check that an attachment exists before returning a URL;
- return an absolute, publicly accessible image URL;
- fall back to the plugin’s normal hierarchy when no custom image is available; and
- be retested after plugin updates.
Because filter names and callback signatures vary by plugin version, copy the current example from that plugin’s developer API and adapt only the post-type and image-selection logic. Test logged-out pages and cached pages, not just an administrator preview.
Why the wrong image appears
No featured-image support
If the editor has no Featured image panel, verify that the post type declares thumbnail support and that the active theme exposes it. Assigning an image in the media library alone does not make it the post’s featured image.
A social override wins
Open Graph plugins often prioritize a manually selected social image. Clear that field or replace the file if the override is intentional.
Duplicate metadata
Inspect the source for multiple og:image tags. The Open Graph plugin listing specifically notes that Jetpack can also output Open Graph metadata; disable one source to avoid duplication.

The fallback is different from what you expect
One plugin may choose the first content image, another an attachment, and another a generated branded card. Read the active plugin’s hierarchy and test a post that has no featured image.
Crawler access or cache problems
Confirm that the URL in og:image is reachable without a login and that the page source is the updated version. Use the preview or debugging tool supplied by the target platform. Tool names and cache-refresh behavior vary, so follow that platform’s current instructions rather than assuming a forced refresh is available.
Validate previews with a repeatable capture
A screenshot of the public page can make regressions obvious: compare a post with an override, a featured-image-only post and a fallback post after each configuration change. Capture the logged-out URL so you see what a crawler-like visitor receives. This visual check complements, but does not replace, inspecting the HTML for og:image.

- Performance: Generate or select the image at publish time, not on every page request, where your plugin supports that model. Keep image files appropriately sized and let WordPress serve registered sizes.
- Reliability: Test uncached and cached responses, logged-out access and each custom post type. A correct editor setting is insufficient if a cache serves old head markup.
