A direct HTTP request works when the data is present in the server response; pages that require browser rendering may need a separate browser-capable service.
Before you scrape: choose an authorized source
Check the target’s official documentation first. An API or feed normally provides clearer fields, authentication, pagination, and usage limits than scraping page markup. If the service has no native Make integration, Make’s HTTP app can connect to API services and other applications.
Use an access method you are permitted to use and follow the target’s terms, robots guidance, authentication requirements, and applicable law. The workflow below does not bypass access controls, bot checks, paywalls, or CAPTCHAs.
What Make’s HTTP app can do
Make documents its HTTP app for retrieving web content and parsing JSON into scenario workflows. - Send HTTPS requests with the method required by the endpoint.
- Add query parameters and request headers.
- Authenticate with no authentication, an API key, Basic Auth, or OAuth 2.0.
- Parse structured responses so fields can be mapped into later modules.
- Configure offset, page, link, or cursor/token pagination.
Make accepts HTTPS URLs and rejects unverified self-signed certificates. Store credentials in the module’s dedicated Credentials field rather than exposing secrets in a query string or ordinary header.
Build a basic Make scraping scenario
1. Create a scenario and add the request
- In Make, create a scenario and select HTTP > Make a request.
- Enter the target HTTPS URL. For an API, use the documented endpoint; for a public page, use its page URL.
- Select the documented method, usually GET for retrieval. Do not assume GET if the API specifies POST or another method.
- Add query parameters exactly as documented, such as a search term, date range, page number, or page size.
- Add only the headers the target requires, including an accepted
Acceptvalue or a documented user-agent policy. - Choose the appropriate authentication option and save secrets in Credentials.
- Enable response parsing when you want Make to expose structured JSON values for mapping.
Run the module once. Inspect the status, headers, and response body before connecting a destination. If the response is HTML, identify the fields you are actually allowed to collect; the official documentation establishes retrieval and JSON parsing, but does not prescribe one universal HTML-selector recipe.
2. Map the result into another app
Add the destination module after the HTTP module: a spreadsheet row, database record, webhook, or another supported action. Map only the fields needed downstream. Add filters to discard irrelevant records and transformation steps to normalize dates, numbers, names, or missing values. Make describes this as mapping data retrieved by one module into a later action.
3. Test with a small response
Start with one page or a narrow date range. Confirm that the destination receives the expected fields, that empty values are handled, and that repeated runs do not create unwanted duplicates. Where the target supplies a stable ID or URL, use it as a key for deduplication if your destination supports that pattern.

Configure pagination correctly
Pagination is controlled by the target’s response format, not by a generic scraping rule. In HTTP Version 4, select the pattern that matches the API:

Make documents an HTTP pagination limit configurable from 1 through 10,000 items. That setting does not override the target API’s own page-size, rate, or result limits. Verify the item path and the next-link or token path against a real response, then run a small test before increasing the limit.
Scheduling repeatable collection
Once one run succeeds, schedule the scenario for the frequency your use case needs. A recurring run can collect newly available or changed records when the target supports a date filter, cursor, update timestamp, or other incremental parameter. Persist the last successful cursor or timestamp in a suitable Make data store or destination field, and design the scenario so a failed run can be retried without silently skipping records.
Do not assume that a schedule, operation allowance, or interval is included in every Make plan; confirm the entitlement for your account. Respect the target’s request limits and avoid launching many parallel requests unless the API explicitly allows them.

When a direct HTTP request is not enough
An HTTP module receives the server response. If the fields you need appear only after JavaScript executes in a browser, or if the site requires browser-specific interaction, a browser-capable or scraping service connected to Make may be necessary. This is a practical boundary, not a claim that every JavaScript-based site fails with HTTP.
A surfaced creator tutorial mentions Apify, Firecrawl, and Browserless as examples to evaluate. It does not establish comparative reliability, pricing, or capabilities, so assess any service against your target’s rendering needs, authentication, output format, volume, and budget.

Limits that affect larger collections
Make’s Help Center documents limits that apply in the contexts described by its module guidance:
- 3,200 objects: many searches can process up to this number in a run.
- 5 MB: some modules have a 5 MB data limit.
- 40 minutes: a scenario can hit this run-time ceiling.
These are Make platform figures, not universal limits for every module or target. Third-party API limits can apply as well. For large collections, request smaller API-supported pages, filter by date or ID, and run multiple controlled batches. See Make’s module-limit documentation and re-check it because platform caps can change.
Troubleshooting common failures
401 or 403 responses
The credential may be missing, expired, scoped incorrectly, or sent in the wrong location. Compare the method, authentication scheme, required headers, and endpoint with the target’s documentation. Re-save the credential in Make’s Credentials field and never paste a secret into a public URL.
404 or an empty response
Confirm the endpoint path, URL encoding, required query parameters, and environment (production versus sandbox). An empty result may be a valid response for the selected filter; inspect the raw body and status before changing the parser.
JSON fields do not appear for mapping
Run the HTTP module once with a representative response and enable response parsing. Verify that the response is actually JSON and that the item array is at the path you configured. If the target returns HTML, identify an authorized extraction method rather than assuming JSON paths will work.

Pagination repeats or stops early
Check whether the API uses zero- or one-based pages, whether the cursor must be sent in a header, and whether the next link is an absolute URL. Confirm that the item path and next-token path match the latest response schema. Lower the page size while testing.

The scenario times out or exceeds data limits
Reduce each batch, narrow the date range, and store progress after successful pages. Split a historical backfill into separate runs. Check both Make’s documented limits and the target’s rate and response-size limits.
The page works in a browser but not in HTTP
Compare the browser’s initial document with its later network requests. The data may come from a separate API, require authentication, or depend on browser execution. Use the documented API when available; otherwise evaluate a browser-capable service that the target permits.

How do I scrape a website using Make?
Add HTTP > Make a request, use the target’s documented URL, method, parameters, headers, and credentials, configure pagination from the actual response, then map and filter the returned fields into your destination. If the required content is browser-rendered, use an authorized browser-capable service instead of trying to evade the site’s controls.

Can Make scrape any website?
No. Make can request HTTPS resources, but the target may require an API, authentication, browser rendering, or interaction that a plain HTTP request does not provide. Access must also be authorized.
Does Make HTTP support cursor pagination?
Yes. HTTP Version 4 documents cursor/token pagination along with offset, page, and next-link patterns. Configure the paths and parameters to match the target API’s response.
What should I do when a target has no API?
Test whether the needed data is present in the server response and can be collected under the target’s rules. If it depends on browser execution, evaluate an authorized browser or scraping service connected to Make.
