Gauge and Selenium work together: Gauge runs readable acceptance-test scenarios written in Markdown, while Selenium WebDriver controls the browser from the step implementation code. A minimal workflow is to write a scenario, connect its steps to Python functions, run it with gauge run, then review Gauge’s pass/fail report and any step-level output.
What Gauge and Selenium each do
They are complementary tools, not alternatives. Gauge organizes and executes acceptance tests; Selenium supplies browser automation.
- A
.specfile describes a user-visible scenario in Markdown. - Gauge matches each scenario step to a step implementation in the project’s language runner.
- The implementation calls Selenium WebDriver to navigate, interact with the page, and inspect observable results.
- Gauge reports whether the steps passed or failed.
Gauge describes itself as an open-source acceptance-test framework and notes that a step implementation can use a browser driver such as Selenium or Appium (Gauge overview). Selenium WebDriver is a language-neutral API and protocol for controlling browsers; browser support is provided through browser-specific driver implementations (Selenium getting started).
Choose a language and install the project components
This walkthrough uses Python. A working project needs the Gauge runtime, the Gauge Python runner, Selenium’s Python binding, a browser, and a compatible browser driver. The exact installation steps can vary by operating system, browser, and runner version, so check the setup instructions for the versions you install. Selenium documents Selenium Manager as the default browser and driver management tool used by its bindings; consult the current Selenium documentation if your environment needs explicit driver setup (Selenium documentation).

Gauge’s examples include Selenium implementations in Python as well as Java, C#, and Ruby, but runner commands and APIs are language-specific. Do not mix step-definition syntax from one runner with another (Gauge examples).
- Install Gauge using the instructions for your operating system at the Gauge documentation.
- Install and configure the Gauge Python runner using its current setup instructions. The runner must be available to the Gauge CLI.
- Install Selenium’s Python binding in the environment used to run the project:
python -m pip install selenium. - Install a supported browser. Selenium Manager may manage the matching driver for supported setups; verify browser and driver requirements for your chosen environment.
- Create or initialize a Gauge Python project using the current runner’s documented command. The examples page shows project templates, but runner-specific setup can change.
The code below uses the Gauge Python runner’s @step decorator and Selenium’s Python WebDriver API. It assumes the Gauge Python runner and Selenium are installed in the execution environment and that the runner discovers the step implementation file.
Write a readable Gauge specification
Save a specification such as specs/search.spec. Gauge uses Markdown headings for specifications and scenarios, with steps expressed as readable actions rather than browser mechanics.
# Search the example site
## Find the documentation page
* Open the example site
* Search for "documentation"
* The results include "Documentation"
Gauge’s specification format and step matching are described in its overview. Keep locators, waits, and WebDriver calls in the implementation, not in the scenario prose.

Implement the steps with Selenium in Python
Put the following in the step implementation file discovered by your Gauge Python runner (for example, a Python file in the project’s step_impl directory if that is how the initialized template is structured). This example targets the public example domain example.com; replace it with an application and selectors that exist in your own test environment before running it.

from getgauge.python import step
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
def before_scenario():
# A fresh browser session per scenario keeps state isolated.
global driver
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
driver.implicitly_wait(0)
def after_scenario():
# Quit even after a failed assertion so the browser process is released.
global driver
if "driver" in globals() and driver is not None:
driver.quit()
driver = None
@step("Open the example site")
def open_example_site():
driver.get("https://example.com")
@step('Search for "<query>"')
def search_for(query):
# Replace this interaction with a real search field on your application.
field = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.NAME, "q"))
)
field.clear()
field.send_keys(query)
field.submit()
@step('The results include "<expected>"')
def results_include(expected):
# Verify visible page content, not an internal implementation detail.
WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.text_to_be_present_in_element((By.TAG_NAME, "body"), expected)
)
The scenario is intentionally a structure example, not a claim that example.com has a search field. Replace the URL and locator with an actual application page. The explicit waits fail with a timeout if the element or expected text does not appear; this is usually more diagnosable than sleeping for a fixed duration. The assertion checks visible page text, which ties the test to a user-observable outcome.
Gauge runner hooks for setup and teardown are runner-specific. If your Python runner version uses a different hook naming or registration convention, use the hook syntax documented for that runner and keep the same lifecycle: start a browser before a scenario and always quit it afterward. Ensure the runner recognizes the hook functions; otherwise the step code can run without invoking them.
Use data tables for meaningful input variations
When the same user journey should be checked with several inputs, use a Gauge table instead of copying nearly identical scenarios. Gauge executes the scenario for each row, and a step can reference table values. Gauge also documents external CSV data sources (Gauge overview; Gauge execution).
# Search results
## Search finds expected content
| query | expected |
| documentation | Documentation |
| support | Support |
* Open the application
* Search for "<query>"
* The results include "<expected>"
Use rows only where the scenario and expected behavior are genuinely the same. If different inputs lead to different workflows or business rules, separate scenarios are usually clearer. Data rows do not remove the need for isolated test data or stable selectors.
Run Gauge tests and inspect results
- From the project root, run
gauge run specs, substituting the actual directory containing your.specfiles if it is not namedspecs. - For step-level console detail, run
gauge run --verbose specs. - Read the pass/fail report Gauge generates and use the failing step and its error output to locate whether the issue is in the scenario, step matching, browser setup, page behavior, or assertion.
Gauge’s execution documentation describes the gauge run workflow and default specification pass/fail reporting; its examples also describe invoking Gauge in CI and publishing or retaining reports (Gauge execution; Gauge examples). A typical CI job installs Gauge and the required language runner, makes the browser available, runs the CLI command, and preserves the generated report as a build artifact.

Run specifications in parallel carefully
Gauge supports parallel specification execution with worker processes. Start with independent scenarios and isolated browser sessions and test data; then add concurrency deliberately. The documented command form is:
gauge run --parallel specs
Use -n to set the number of execution streams, for example:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →gauge run --parallel -n 4 specs
Gauge documents lazy allocation as the default and also describes eager allocation with grouping. Choose the allocation behavior and grouping options from the current execution guide for your runner and suite. Parallelism is useful only when each worker can safely execute its assigned specifications.
Thread-based parallelism is a separate option from worker-process parallelism. Gauge’s execution guide names Java and .NET runners for thread-based execution and requires thread-safe test code. Do not assume that the Python runner supports that mode; check its current capabilities. Browser objects, mutable shared fixtures, accounts, and test records must not be concurrently reused unless your code explicitly makes that safe.
There is no fixed speedup: browser startup, machine capacity, network latency, and uneven scenario durations affect the result. Selenium Grid is an option when browser execution needs to be distributed across machines or browser configurations; it is an infrastructure choice, not a requirement for a small local suite (Selenium documentation).

Keep the suite maintainable and reliable
- Write steps in the vocabulary product and engineering teams use, and keep each scenario understandable without reading its implementation.
- Reuse steps when they describe the same meaningful action; avoid overly generic steps that conceal what the scenario is doing.
- Prefer explicit waits for a condition the test needs over arbitrary fixed delays.
- Use stable locators available in your application, such as durable IDs or test-specific attributes, rather than selectors tied to presentation details.
- Make setup and cleanup reliable. Each scenario should close its own browser even when a step fails.
- For parallel runs, isolate browser sessions, accounts, and mutable test data so one scenario cannot alter another’s result.
- Keep failures diagnosable: assert observable outcomes and retain useful console output and Gauge reports in CI.
Troubleshooting common failures
Gauge reports that a step is not implemented
The wording in the .spec may not match a registered step pattern, or the runner may not have discovered the Python implementation file. Compare the step text and decorator pattern, check the runner’s expected project layout, and confirm that the Python runner is installed and available to Gauge.
The browser does not start
Check that the browser is installed and supported by the Selenium binding, that the test process can access it, and that Selenium Manager can resolve the required driver in your environment. If automatic management is unavailable due to network or environment restrictions, follow the current Selenium setup instructions for managing that browser’s driver explicitly.
A locator times out or an assertion fails
Confirm that the test is on the expected page and that the selector exists in the current application. Check whether the content is loaded asynchronously, whether the element is inside a frame or shadow root, and whether the test account has the expected data. Wait for the relevant state rather than increasing every timeout indiscriminately.
Scenarios pass alone but fail in parallel
Look for shared accounts or records, reused browser instances, global mutable state, or a test that depends on another specification’s effects. Give each scenario independent data and a separate browser session; reduce concurrency while diagnosing, then increase it after isolation is established.
CI differs from a local run
Check differences in browser availability, headless/display requirements, network access, credentials, environment variables, and runner versions. Retain verbose output and the Gauge report from the failing job so the failure can be tied to a specific step.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API, not a replacement for Gauge acceptance tests or Selenium interactions and assertions. It can be useful when a workflow also needs page-capture artifacts without managing a local browser session. A single request captures a page as an image or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Gauge run Selenium tests without a browser?
No. Selenium WebDriver controls a browser, so the test environment needs a supported browser and an available driver-management path. Gauge can run non-browser acceptance tests too, but a Selenium-based scenario requires a browser session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I use Gauge with a language other than Python?
Yes. Gauge has language runners and examples for multiple languages, including Java, C#, Python, and Ruby. Choose the runner that fits your team and follow its own setup, hook, and step-definition conventions.
Does ScreenshotNeo replace Gauge and Selenium?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures rendered pages; it does not execute Gauge scenarios or provide Selenium’s browser interaction and assertion workflow.
