You can automate checks of a website’s WebMCP tools—whether they are exposed, their input schemas parse, and representative actions return useful results—but WebMCP is not established as a Google Search ranking factor. Treat this as an audit of agent-facing interactions, alongside rather than instead of a conventional SEO audit covering crawling, indexing, metadata, and links.

What a WebMCP audit can—and cannot—tell you

WebMCP is a proposed web standard for exposing structured page tools to AI agents. Chrome’s documentation describes two ways to expose them: an imperative JavaScript API and a declarative approach that annotates ordinary HTML forms. The goal is to let an agent discover and invoke a page action through a defined interface rather than relying only on simulated mouse clicks and text entry. Chrome calls that simulated interaction “actuation.” See Chrome’s WebMCP documentation for the current API overview.

For an audit, that means checking whether the page exposes tools for meaningful user tasks, whether their schemas are usable, and whether calls produce sensible outcomes and errors. It does not mean measuring organic search performance. The available WebMCP and Lighthouse documentation does not establish that adding WebMCP improves conventional Google rankings or traffic.

WebMCP and Chrome’s implementation are experimental and can change. Chrome describes support through the Chrome 149 origin trial or a local Chrome flag for development; the DevTools debugging guide says debugging requires Chrome 149 or later with WebMCP enabled. Lighthouse’s experimental Agentic Browsing category has a separate prerequisite: Chrome 150 or later and origin-trial registration for WebMCP audits. Confirm current availability and setup in the official documentation before building a recurring check.

Build an audit around a real user task

Start with a specific journey, not a generic question such as “Does the site support agents?” Examples include finding a product, checking appointment availability, or submitting a support request. Chrome’s WebMCP workflow guidance recommends starting from user goals and prioritizing journeys where agent interaction adds value.

  1. Set the boundary. Write down the user’s goal, the context the tool needs, and what a successful result looks like. Identify actions that must stay restricted—for example, submitting a consequential request without confirmation.
  2. Choose representative pages and states. Include the page where the action is available and any relevant state variations, such as a form with valid data or a validation error. A client has to visit the site directly to discover its callable tools, so a URL list alone cannot establish what a live page registers.
  3. Record the environment. Note the page URL, date, browser version, and whether WebMCP is enabled through the origin trial or a local testing flag. Without these details, a later change in browser support or trial state can make results difficult to reproduce.
  4. Define expected behavior. Specify the tool name and purpose, required and optional inputs, expected success result, and acceptable validation or failure response. Include what the tool must not do without a user confirmation.

Inspect registered tools in a live browser

Use the WebMCP inspector and debugging workflow documented by Chrome DevTools to inspect the page after it has loaded. The WebMCP debugging guide describes inspecting registered tools, manually calling them, and checking whether the browser parses their JSON Schema.

  1. Open the target page in a supported Chrome context with WebMCP enabled. Record the browser version and enablement method.
  2. Open the WebMCP debugging or inspector workflow described in DevTools documentation, then inspect the tools registered by the current page.
  3. Compare the discovered tool names and input schemas with the task definition. Check that names are meaningful, inputs are clear, and required data is actually required.
  4. Use the inspector to manually exercise a representative call. Check the returned content, not just whether the call completed.
  5. Repeat after the page reaches the state where dynamically registered tools should appear. A tool registered only after a user action or delayed load may not be visible immediately.

This is a live-page inspection: a static source review may help assess authored markup or schemas, but it cannot by itself show which tools the browser has registered at runtime. Conversely, seeing a registered tool does not demonstrate that its action is safe, successful, or understandable to an agent.

Automate repeatable checks with webmcp-evals

The GoogleChromeLabs webmcp-evals README documents three relevant modes: static schema evaluation, live browser evaluation using Puppeteer, and smoke evaluation that executes authored expected calls. Use the mode that matches the question being tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approach What it checks What it does not establish alone
Static schema evaluation Whether authored schemas meet the evaluator’s checks. Whether a live page registers those tools or whether an action behaves correctly.
Live browser evaluation Tools and behavior available in a browser-loaded page. Production reliability across every browser, session, or user journey.
Smoke evaluation Whether authored expected calls can be executed as repeatable checks. Whether the chosen scenarios cover every meaningful task or security risk.

Keep checks deterministic where possible: define expected calls and expected outcomes explicitly, and treat an unexpected tool list, schema parse failure, wrong result, or unhelpful error as a review item. Dynamic registration can make timing relevant, so arrange the test to wait for the page state in which the tool should exist rather than assuming it is available at initial navigation.

The README establishes the project’s documented capabilities; it does not guarantee compatibility with every application or provide a universal command line for all environments. Follow the repository’s current installation and usage instructions for the exact invocation supported by the version you adopt.

Use Lighthouse as a separate agentic signal

Chrome’s experimental Lighthouse Agentic Browsing documentation describes audits for WebMCP and machine interaction. It monitors declarative and imperative tool registration and also checks accessibility-tree and stability signals. The category currently reports fractional pass ratios and audit pass/fail or informational signals; it is not a weighted 0–100 score. It requires Chrome 150 or later and origin-trial registration for WebMCP audits, according to the documentation.

Keep this result distinct from Lighthouse’s conventional performance and SEO findings. An agentic pass ratio is not a search ranking score, and a passing machine-interaction check does not prove crawlability, indexing, or useful search snippets.

Test execution, errors, and output quality

For each representative tool, test one expected success path, relevant invalid or missing inputs, and the failure states the interface can reasonably return. The audit should verify that output is structured and understandable to an agent, rather than merely present.

  • Success: Does the call complete the intended action or clearly report its result? Does the response identify the relevant record, status, or next step?
  • Input validation: Are malformed, missing, or out-of-range values rejected clearly? Does the schema make required inputs apparent?
  • Unavailable state: If the requested item or action is unavailable, does the tool return an intelligible result rather than ambiguous empty content?
  • Failure messaging: Does an error explain what failed without leaking unnecessary sensitive information or inviting unsafe retries?
  • Output suitability: Is the response concise and structured enough for an agent to use, without burying the result in irrelevant page text?

Do not describe a small set of authored calls as production reliability testing. Report exactly which scenarios ran, on which page and browser, and what was observed. A browser smoke test is useful for regression detection, but it is not evidence of performance or availability across all visitors.

Include security and confirmation checks

WebMCP tools can operate in a browser session that may already be authenticated. Chrome’s agent security considerations warn about risks such as malicious instructions in tool manifests or returned data. Audit security as a first-class part of the workflow, not as a final cosmetic check.

  • Review tool descriptions and parameters for misleading instructions, excessive scope, or inputs that allow unintended actions.
  • Consider whether returned user-generated or otherwise untrusted text could contain instructions that an agent might misinterpret.
  • Check origin restrictions and avoid granting broader cross-origin access than the task requires.
  • Require user confirmation for high-impact actions where appropriate; a tool’s successful execution is not itself proof that execution was authorized.
  • Limit output and avoid exposing personal data that the user’s task does not require.
  • Use layered controls, including token limits, origin restrictions, user confirmation, and routine security evaluation, as appropriate to the application.

Record security findings separately from basic schema or functional checks. A tool can parse correctly and return the expected answer while still having an overly broad permission boundary.

Turn the audit into a maintainable CI check

Choose a small set of stable, high-value journeys and keep their expected calls under version control. Use the documented smoke mode for deterministic checks that should run without an LLM, and use live browser evaluation when the check needs to verify page registration or browser behavior. Keep any model-assisted evaluation separate from deterministic pass/fail checks so that the source of a changing result is clear.

For each run, retain a compact report containing:

  • Page URL and date of the run.
  • Browser and version, plus origin-trial or local-flag state.
  • Tools discovered and the schemas checked.
  • Calls exercised, expected behavior, and observed results.
  • Known scope limits, including journeys, authenticated states, or failure cases not covered.

Revisit the test set when the page workflow or tool schema changes, and when Chrome’s proposed API or experimental support changes. A page that no longer exposes a tool may reflect an application regression, a changed page state, or a changed browser setup; the recorded environment helps distinguish them.

Troubleshooting common audit failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No tools appear in the inspector. WebMCP is not enabled in that browser context, the page has not registered tools, or the tools are registered only after a later state. Confirm the Chrome version and trial or flag state, then load the relevant page state and inspect again.
A schema does not parse. The browser rejects the supplied schema or it differs from what the page actually registers. Inspect the live schema and correct the schema issue reported by the browser before testing calls.
A call fails despite a visible tool. The call may use invalid or missing inputs, depend on page state, or encounter an application-side failure. Compare the call with the registered schema and the task’s expected preconditions; record the returned error.
Tools appear inconsistently between runs. Registration may depend on delayed or dynamic page behavior. Wait for the intended state before inspecting and make the timing condition part of the reproducible test.
Lighthouse gives no WebMCP audit results. The documented Lighthouse prerequisites may not be met. Check for Chrome 150 or later and origin-trial registration for WebMCP audits, as specified in Chrome’s scoring documentation.
A check passes but the agent still gets confusing output. Schema parsing or call completion may be tested without judging whether the result is clear and actionable. Add an explicit expected-output review for success, validation, and unavailable states.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a WebMCP inspector: it cannot establish which WebMCP tools a page registers or whether those tools execute correctly. It can complement an audit when a visual record of a page state is useful. One request returns an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. ScreenshotNeo is at screenshotneo.com.
