Use Instagram’s Graph API with a Professional account, cache hashtag IDs, collect top and recent public media, and score candidates against a research brief. The reliable workflow is: define your audience and exclusions, authenticate a Business or Creator account, resolve each hashtag with /{ig-user-id}/hashtag_search, retrieve evidence from top_media and recent_media, store raw responses, rank candidates, and manually approve the final set.
What you need before automating
Automation works best when the inputs and access model are explicit. Create a brief containing:
- Niche and intent: the subject and whether the post is for discovery, education, a product, an event, or a community.
- Audience: customer type, experience level, geography, language, and any regional spelling.
- Campaign dates: launch, seasonal, or evergreen.
- Exclusions: banned terms, sensitive subjects, misleading meanings, and competitor or trademark terms you cannot use.
- Selection rules: target number of tags, acceptable competition, minimum relevance, and refresh interval.
Use an eligible Instagram account
The documented API route supports Instagram Professional accounts (Business and Creator). Consumer accounts are not supported. For the Facebook Login setup, the Instagram account must be linked to a Facebook Page. Obtain Meta authentication and the permissions required by your app before writing the collector.
Keep official and unofficial access separate
Official Graph API calls have defined permissions and limits. Scrapers, browser automation, and third-party MCP projects may expose additional operations, but they do not automatically have the same permissions, stability, or policy status. Keep any unofficial connector isolated from production data and review its terms before use.

How the official hashtag workflow works
- Resolve a hashtag. Call
/{ig-user-id}/hashtag_search?q={hashtag}. Send the hashtag text without the#character and save the returned hashtag ID. - Collect top media. Query
/{ig-hashtag-id}/top_mediafor representative, high-visibility examples. - Collect recent media. Query
/{ig-hashtag-id}/recent_mediato measure current usage and language. - Paginate. Follow each response’s cursor or
paging.nextlink until your collection rule is met. Do not assume the first page is the full result. - Normalize. Store the hashtag ID, original query, retrieval time, media ID, caption, media type, permalink, timestamp, and any engagement or insight fields your permissions provide.
- Score and review. Rank candidates, retain raw responses for reproducibility, and manually approve tags before publishing.
The documented hashtag-media workflow represents public media. Posts from private accounts are not included, so a low result count does not prove that a hashtag is unused everywhere.
Minimal API requests
Set GRAPH_API_BASE to the current Graph API base and version used by your Meta app; keep the version in configuration so an API upgrade does not require code changes.

A single flattened list loses the evidence needed to explain why a tag was selected. Keep a research table with these columns:

Log failed and empty searches separately. An empty response can result from spelling, sensitivity filtering, permissions, or an access problem; treating it as zero popularity produces bad decisions.
Build a scoring system that matches your strategy
Instagram does not provide a universal hashtag score. Define a transparent policy and keep the components separate so an editor can override an automated rank. One practical 100-point model is:

Record the formula and weights with every ranking run. That makes changes explainable when the same hashtag moves up or down.
Stay inside query limits and keep results fresh
A documented Instagram/Meta API review records a maximum of 30 unique hashtag queries in a rolling seven-day period (2026). Count unique search terms, not media pages, and queue new ideas when the window is full.
- Resolve each spelling once and cache its hashtag ID.
- Refresh high-value tags on a schedule; do not re-resolve unchanged names.
- Prioritize campaign tags and recently stale records when capacity becomes available.
- Use exponential backoff for transient failures and stop retrying authentication or permission errors until credentials are fixed.
- Monitor query usage, response latency, empty-result rates, and pagination failures.
Recent-media freshness depends on API delivery and your polling schedule. Store retrieval timestamps so readers of your internal report know when a result was observed.

- The dominant meaning matches the post, not an unrelated community or slang term.
- Images and captions are appropriate for your audience and geography.
- The term does not carry an unexpected sensitive or political meaning.
- The language and spelling match the campaign brief.
- Your own post would remain truthful if a viewer searched the tag.

Instagram’s search bar can reveal popularity and related ideas. The 2025 Instagram Playbook also identifies Hashtagify and RiteTag as discovery aids for generating ideas and analyzing tags used by industry leaders and competitors. Treat their suggestions as hypotheses: validate each final term with your account’s content, the official public-media evidence you can access, and your manual safety check.
Competitor analysis should focus on public hashtagged media and patterns, not copying captions or collecting private-account data. Compare posting context, recurring tag groups, content format, and apparent audience fit rather than assuming a competitor’s largest tag will work for you.
Common failures and fixes
No hashtag results
Check that the query omits #, uses the intended spelling, and is sent with a valid Professional-account token. Then determine whether filtering or permissions explain the empty response before labeling the tag unpopular.

Permission or authentication errors
Confirm the token owner, linked Facebook Page requirement for Facebook Login, app permissions, and token expiry. Do not silently retry a rejected request.
Only the first page is stored
Follow cursor pagination or paging.next until your explicit sample limit. Save every raw page and the retrieval time.
Duplicate media skews rankings
Deduplicate by media ID, not caption text. Keep separate top and recent samples so a post appearing in both edges is counted once in combined analysis.
Data changes between runs
That is expected for recent media. Version your scoring weights, preserve raw responses, and compare snapshots by retrieval date instead of overwriting history.

- Encrypt access tokens, restrict logs, and avoid storing credentials beside raw media.
- Define retention for captions and permalinks, especially when reports include user-generated text.
