Word’s AutoFit commands help you size a table to its contents or to the available document width. For compact columns, select the table and choose Table Layout > AutoFit > AutoFit Contents; to fit the whole table to the page width, choose AutoFit Window. The steps below follow Microsoft’s documented instructions for Word desktop.
How to AutoFit a table to its contents in Word for Windows
Use this option when you want each column to be only as wide as its contents require. Microsoft places the command in the Cell Size group.
- Click anywhere inside the table.
- Select the table. You can click the table’s move handle at its upper-left corner, or use the selection options on the table ribbon.
- Open the Table Layout tab. In some Word installations using the Single Line Ribbon, table commands may appear under a single Table tab instead.
- In the Cell Size group, select AutoFit.
- Choose AutoFit Contents.
Word recalculates the column widths from the content in the table. If you cannot see Table Layout, click inside the table first; the table-specific tabs are contextual.
Make the entire table fit the page width
Choose AutoFit Window when the table should span the usable width between the page margins. Unlike AutoFit Contents, this changes the width of the table as a whole, not to tightly size each column to its text.

|---|---|---|
| AutoFit Contents | Adjusts column widths to match the cell contents. | Compact tables with short, uneven amounts of text. |
| AutoFit Window | Fits the entire table to the available document width. | Tables that should span the usable page width. |

Stop Word from resizing columns
To keep the current column widths, use Microsoft’s Fixed Column Width option:
- Select the table.
- Open Table Layout.
- Select AutoFit in the Cell Size group.
- Choose Fixed Column Width.
This is useful when you have manually arranged a table and do not want a long entry to change its column widths.
Set an exact column width
AutoFit is convenient, but a fixed measurement can help with repeatable layouts such as invoices, forms, and comparison tables.
- Click a cell in the column you want to change.
- Open Table Layout.
- In Cell Size, locate Table Column Width.
- Enter the required measurement.
To give selected columns the same width, select them and choose Table Layout > Cell Size > Distribute Columns. Use Distribute Rows for selected rows.

Adjust row height when text is cut off
Word automatically adjusts row height to fit content until the row height is manually changed. A manually assigned height can prevent a row from expanding when text wraps.
- Select a cell in the affected row.
- Open Table Layout.
- Use Table Row Height in the Cell Size group to enter an exact height, or remove the restrictive manual height through the table’s height settings.
If you want several rows to have a consistent size, select them and choose Distribute Rows. Be careful with exact heights when cells contain paragraphs, as a restrictive height can prevent all text from displaying.
Reduce cramped cells without changing column widths
If the columns are wide enough but the text looks crowded, change cell margins rather than widening the columns. Microsoft distinguishes cell margins (space inside cells) from cell spacing (gaps between cells).

Why AutoFit may not produce the result you expect
The table has merged cells
Merged cells can make automatic sizing harder to troubleshoot because a cell spans more than one column. To merge cells, select multiple adjacent cells and choose Table Layout > Merge Cells. If Merge Cells is unavailable, the selection may not contain multiple adjacent cells.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a complicated table with merged headings, apply AutoFit first, then manually set the important column widths for more predictable results.
The table has a manually fixed width
If the table was previously sized manually, AutoFit Window may not appear to change the layout as expected. Try applying the desired AutoFit option again, then use Fixed Column Width once the arrangement is correct.
Text contains long unbroken strings
A long URL, file path, product code, or email address may force a column wider than expected because Word has few places at which to wrap it. Shortening the displayed link text, inserting suitable spaces, or setting a controlled column width can produce a better result.

You cannot see the table boundaries
A table may have no visible borders even though it is present. Click in a cell and choose Layout > View Gridlines. Gridlines are nonprinting guides: they help you edit the table but do not add borders to the printed document.
Convert existing text into an AutoFit table
If your data is separated into lines of text, you can convert it instead of rebuilding the table.
- Select the text.
- Choose Insert > Table > Convert Text to Table.
- In the conversion dialog, choose Fixed column width, AutoFit to contents, or AutoFit to window.
- Confirm the separator used for columns and select OK.
Tabs or other separator characters define columns, and paragraph marks define rows. If the source text contains commas, Microsoft recommends using tabs as separators instead.

FAQ
What is the shortcut to AutoFit a table in Word?
Microsoft’s documented method is to select the table and use Table Layout > AutoFit > AutoFit Contents. Microsoft’s current Word table-resizing instructions do not specify a keyboard shortcut. The often-repeated advice to double-click a column boundary is documented by Microsoft for Excel, not as the standard Word AutoFit procedure.
What is the difference between AutoFit Contents and AutoFit Window?
AutoFit Contents adjusts individual column widths around the material in the cells. AutoFit Window changes the width of the entire table to fit the available document width. They solve different layout problems.
How do I keep Word from changing my table columns?
Select the table, open Table Layout, choose AutoFit in the Cell Size group, and select Fixed Column Width.
Why is AutoFit not expanding my table row?
A manually assigned row height may prevent the row from growing when text wraps. Select a cell in the row and check Table Row Height. Also inspect merged cells and unusually long, unbroken text.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I AutoFit only one column?
AutoFit is applied through the table’s AutoFit commands. To set one specific column’s width, select a cell in it and enter a measurement in Table Layout > Cell Size > Table Column Width. You can then use Fixed Column Width to preserve the result.
The Bottom Line
For text-sized columns, select the table and choose Table Layout > AutoFit > AutoFit Contents. To make the whole table span the page, choose AutoFit Window instead. Once the layout looks right, use Fixed Column Width if later editing must not move the columns.
