To audit a website for AI search visibility, first check that important pages are accessible and eligible for ordinary search, then review the reporting each platform provides. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundational SEO practices as Google Search; Bing Webmaster Tools offers a separate AI Performance report for citations on specified Microsoft and partner surfaces. Neither report gives a universal score across AI search systems, and eligibility never guarantees that a page will be shown.

What an AI search visibility audit can—and cannot—tell you

An audit can identify technical barriers, assess whether key pages clearly answer real user needs, and show whether supported platform reports record impressions or citations. It cannot guarantee inclusion or establish a single visibility score across Google, Bing, Copilot, and other answer engines.

Google’s guidance says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google also notes that crawling, indexing, and serving are not guaranteed. Its guidance states: There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. Google Search Central: AI features and your website.

For that reason, start with access and first-party reporting—not claims that a particular markup, file, or paid tool can secure an AI citation.

1. Choose the pages you will audit

Begin with a manageable set of pages that matter to your organization. Include high-value informational pages, product or service pages, and pages that answer recurring customer questions. For each URL, record:

  • The page URL and its intended audience or question.
  • The business action it should support, such as understanding a service or contacting your team.
  • The platform reports and date range you will use to check visibility.

This is a practical scope for your audit, not an industry-standard sample size. Keeping the intended audience and purpose beside each URL makes it easier to judge whether the content is genuinely useful rather than merely present.

2. Check whether search engines can access key pages

For each URL, verify that it loads publicly and that your site is not unintentionally preventing discovery or crawling. Review the page itself as well as site-level controls: a robots.txt rule, CDN, web application firewall, or hosting configuration can affect access. Also check that important pages have relevant internal links and that essential information is available as crawlable text.

Use Google Search Console URL Inspection

  1. Open the relevant property in Google Search Console.
  2. Enter the page URL in URL Inspection.
  3. Review its indexing status and inspect what Google reports about the page it received.
  4. If the page is not indexed or the inspection reveals an access issue, investigate the stated cause before treating the URL as eligible.

Indexing and snippet eligibility are prerequisites for Google’s AI search features, not promises of display. Google’s overview is at AI features and your website.

Check the page as a visitor would

  • Confirm the URL loads without a login or error for a typical visitor.
  • Look for accidental blocks in robots.txt, CDN, firewall, or hosting settings.
  • Follow the site’s internal links to confirm the page is discoverable.
  • Check that the main answer or product information is present in text, not only in an inaccessible visual element.

3. Assess the content and its consistency

Ask whether each page answers a clear user need with information that is useful, reliable, distinctive, and supported by evidence. If a page repeats generic material available everywhere, improve its substance—such as the explanation, supporting evidence, or freshness—rather than adding text solely to make it longer.

Check that structured data accurately reflects visible page content. Add relevant images or video when they help people understand the subject. Google recommends people-first, distinctive content, but these practices are not guarantees of inclusion in an AI-generated answer.

Google says there is no ideal page length and no special content-chunking or schema requirement for eligibility in its AI features. It also says Google Search ignores llms.txt. As Google puts it, There’s no ideal page length, and in the end, make pages for your audience, not just for generative AI search. See AI features and your website and Google’s Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search.

4. Establish separate Google and Bing baselines

Use each platform’s own reporting and record what it measures. An impression, a citation, and a cited-page count are different units; do not combine them into a single score or compare them as if they meant the same thing.

Platform report What it can show Scope and limitation
Google Search Console Generative AI performance reporting Google describes impressions and information about pages and countries in its AI insights. Google-specific reporting; AI feature traffic is also included in overall Web search reporting. Reporting availability and fields are platform-defined. See Google’s AI features documentation and Google’s site-owner announcement.
Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance Citation totals, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, page-level activity, and trends over time. Documented coverage includes Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and selected partner integrations—not every AI answer engine. Counts do not indicate ranking, authority, importance, or placement in an answer. See Bing AI Performance report FAQ.

Review Google’s reporting

In Google Search Console, consult the Generative AI performance reporting available to your property. Google’s August 2026 announcement says its new controls and insights were available worldwide as of August 31, 2026. The documented insights include impressions and information about pages and countries; AI feature traffic is also included in overall Web search reporting. See Google’s site-owner announcement and AI features and your website.

Review Bing’s reporting

In Bing Webmaster Tools, open AI Performance and review the available citation totals, average cited pages, grounding-query samples, page-level activity, and trends. Treat grounding queries as samples, not a complete list of prompts that led to citations. Microsoft’s documented scope covers Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and selected partners. The report does not establish how a page ranks or where it appears in an answer. Details are in the Bing AI Performance report FAQ.

Keep the records interpretable

For every review, note the platform and surface, date range, URLs reported, query or context when available, and metric type. Keep the Google and Bing baselines separate: an impression in one report is not equivalent to a citation in another.

5. Prioritize fixes and evaluate changes carefully

Address clear barriers and content problems first: blocked crawling, missing internal discovery paths, essential information absent from crawlable text, confusing or unsupported claims, and stale material. Then use changes in official platform reports as directional signals for that platform.

Record when changes were made and note other significant site changes during the comparison period. If impressions or citations move afterward, that timing does not prove a particular edit caused the change. Google explicitly does not promise inclusion even when eligibility requirements are met.

Do you need llms.txt, special schema, or an AI visibility tool?

For visibility in Google’s AI search features, Google says llms.txt, special schema, artificial mentions, AI-only rewrites, and special content chunking are not requirements. Google Search ignores llms.txt, according to its guide to optimizing for generative AI features. Focus instead on access, indexing eligibility, accurate page content, and useful material for people.

Start measurement with first-party tools: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing Site Scan is an on-demand crawler for common technical SEO issues, not a universal AI visibility measure; see Bing Site Scan.

A third-party tool may help organize a workflow, but verify exactly which sources and metrics it measures. Google says, No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems. Vendor estimates are not Google’s internal data, and tool use does not guarantee success. See Google’s guidance on third-party SEO tools.

A practical audit checklist

  • Choose important URLs and record each page’s audience, question, and purpose.
  • Confirm pages load, are not unintentionally blocked, have internal links, and provide key information as crawlable text.
  • Use Search Console URL Inspection to review Google’s indexing status and what it received.
  • Make content useful, reliable, distinctive, current, and consistent with its structured data.
  • Review Google Search Console and Bing AI Performance separately, recording each report’s scope, metric, and date range.
  • Fix substantiated access and content issues, then track later reporting without treating timing as proof of cause.
