A resume template cannot be called ATS-passing based on its design alone. To audit one, check whether its text extracts in a sensible order, its section labels are recognizable, and its content matches the job truthfully. This audit has three heading vocabularies to compare, but does not identify them; it also reports zero scanner tests. That means no claim can be made that any template passed or failed an applicant tracking system (ATS).

What an ATS-friendly template can—and cannot—promise

Employers use applicant tracking systems to collect, sort, and review applications. Some systems compare resume content with a job description, as the University of Texas at Austin Career Services explains. That is general guidance, not a specification for every product or employer workflow.

“ATS-friendly” is best treated as a design goal: make the document easy to read and its sections easy to identify. A template audit can uncover obvious extraction problems, but neither a clean-looking page nor a successful plain-text check proves compatibility with every employer’s software.

How to compare the three heading vocabularies

The three sets of headings are not named here, so they cannot be ranked or compared phrase by phrase. Apply the same checks to each set and to the template that uses it.

Recognizability

Prefer labels that clearly identify familiar resume sections, such as work experience, education, and skills. Jobscan describes resume parsing as identifying segments such as these, but that does not establish that every ATS requires exact wording.

Consistency

Check that heading levels and labels follow a predictable pattern. A reader—and text-processing software—should not have to infer whether a decorative or vague label marks a new section.

Truthful relevance

Use terms from the job description when they accurately describe your experience or skills. UT Austin recommends tailoring a resume to the specific job; the University of Victoria warns against keyword overuse and hidden text. Keywords should clarify a real match, not manufacture one.

Run a practical template audit

  1. Inspect the layout. Look for text in headers or footers, columns, tables, graphics, text boxes, and other design elements that could interrupt reading order. UT Austin advises caution with tables, columns, graphics, objects, LaTeX, and design websites; Iowa State LAS Career Services likewise cautions against templates and layout elements that may not parse. These are conservative recommendations, not a universal rule for every ATS.
  2. Save in the employer’s requested format. Do not substitute a different file type when the application specifies one.
  3. Check text extraction. Select and copy the resume into a plain-text editor, or save a copy as plain text. The University of Victoria recommends this as a way to catch unreadable elements, and Indeed offers a similar copy-and-paste check. Confirm that contact details, section order, dates, and bullet points remain understandable. This is a first-pass check, not a simulation of an employer’s ATS.
  4. Tailor the content. Compare the resume with the job description and incorporate relevant terms only where they accurately represent your background. Avoid keyword stuffing and hidden text.
  5. Label any scanner result precisely. If you use a commercial resume scanner, identify the service and what it checked. Jobscan describes a resume scanner, but a vendor’s result is evidence about that tool’s assessment—not certification for all employer systems.

What this audit establishes

The audit reports zero network references, three heading vocabularies, and zero scanner tests. The templates themselves, the heading sets, and the meaning of “network references” are not specified. Consequently, there is no basis here to judge the individual templates or their headings, or to claim that any passed or failed a scanner. What can be established is the method for comparing them: inspect recognizable and consistent headings, review layout risks, and check the extracted text.

Guidance differs in emphasis. UT Austin provides editable Word and Google Docs templates and recommends chronological organization, while Iowa State LAS says there is no single definitive resume format and advises avoiding templates and layouts that may not parse. Treat these as practical cautions rather than guarantees. A straightforward format and a readable extraction check can reduce obvious risks without certifying the file for a particular employer’s system.
