If someone shared an intimate image of you without your consent, report the specific post to the platform first. Keep a record of your request, then use the appropriate image-matching tool to help limit future resharing. In the United States, if a covered platform does not remove the image within 48 hours of a valid request—or does not offer a removal process—you can report the platform to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Report the specific image or post to the platform
Use the report option attached to the post or image when it is available. You can also use the platform’s help or support process to request removal. Include the location of the content and explain that it is an intimate image shared without your consent. Consent to create an image or share it privately is not consent to publish it.
On Meta apps, Meta says it offers dedicated reporting options for private images and threats to share them. Follow the instructions in the app or on its Safety Centre.
Keep a record of your request
Save the post or page location, when and how you reported it, and any case number or reply the platform provides. These details can help you follow up or make a complaint if the platform does not act. The FTC’s guidance does not prescribe a universal evidence checklist, so keep the information you can safely access without resharing or circulating the image.

Use an image-matching tool to help limit resharing
Image-matching tools can help participating platforms identify copies, but they are separate from a request to remove content already online. The FTC describes StopNCII.org as a free global tool operated by the Revenge Porn Helpline. It creates a digital fingerprint of an image and shares that fingerprint—not the image itself—with participating platforms, which can scan for matches and block them. See the FTC’s consumer guidance for details.
Choose based on when the image was made
Meta directs people to StopNCII.org for an image or video made when the person depicted was over 18. For an image or video made when that person was under 18, Meta directs them to NCMEC’s Take It Down. Meta says Take It Down creates the image hash on the user’s device without the image or video leaving that device. The right choice depends on the person’s age when the image was made, not their age now.

The Take It Down Act requires covered platforms to provide a removal-request process and remove intimate images and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. The FTC says the process deadline for covered platforms was May 19, 2026. This is a U.S. requirement for covered platforms, not a response-time guarantee for every website worldwide. Read the FTC’s announcement for the Act’s implementation details.

If a covered platform has not removed the image within 48 hours of your valid request, or if it has no removal-request process, report the platform at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC complaint is a report about the platform; the cited guidance does not say that filing one automatically triggers law enforcement action.
What the FTC report asks for
According to the FTC’s May 19, 2026 transcript, the form asks which platform is involved, where the image is posted, and about your removal attempt. You can include up to five images on the same platform in one report. You do not need to report known duplicates of the same image separately to the FTC. See the FTC transcript.
