There is no WordPress setting or schema tag that puts a page in a Google answer box. Google chooses featured snippets automatically. Your practical goal is to publish a clear, useful answer on a page Google can crawl and index—then let Google decide whether to show it.

“Answer box” usually means a featured snippet: an excerpt Google selects from a page to answer a search. It is different from a structured-data rich result and from an AI Overview or AI Mode response. Those search features work differently, and none is guaranteed by a plugin or markup.

How to make a WordPress page eligible for a featured snippet

Google says publishers cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Its systems select a page when they decide it is a good answer to a particular search. WordPress can help you publish and manage a page, but it cannot control that selection.

Work through these checks for the page that answers the question:

  1. Make sure the page is accessible. It should be public, load successfully, and not be blocked from crawling or indexing. Google explains its technical eligibility and crawlability fundamentals in Search Essentials.
  2. Focus the page on a real question. Use the words readers use in the title, main heading, and relevant descriptive text. Answer the question plainly in the page body, then provide enough accurate detail to satisfy the reader. Google does not prescribe a required heading format, paragraph length, or snippet-winning formula.
  3. Organize the supporting information. Use descriptive headings and lists where they make the explanation easier to scan. Link to relevant pages on your site with crawlable links, and make the important information available as text. Add images or video when they genuinely help explain the subject.
  4. Keep the page useful and reliable. Google recommends people-first content rather than content written primarily to manipulate search presentation. A concise opening answer can orient readers, but completeness and accuracy matter more than matching an alleged ideal snippet length.
  5. Check indexing and performance. Use Google Search Console to investigate indexing or technical problems and review search performance. Google reports traffic from AI features within the overall Web search type, rather than as a separate search type.

These steps remove avoidable barriers and improve the page for readers; they do not ensure that Google will crawl, index, rank, or feature it.

Do you need a WordPress SEO plugin?

No. WordPress includes SEO-related features, and third-party plugins can help manage titles, metadata, and other site settings. A plugin is optional workflow support, not a featured-snippet requirement or a placement guarantee. WordPress.org describes its SEO features and the plugin ecosystem in its WordPress SEO documentation.

If you choose a plugin, consider whether it fits your existing setup, offers settings you actually need, and avoids duplicating functionality already provided by your theme or other plugins. No particular plugin is established as a way to earn a Google answer box.

Can schema markup get a Google answer box?

No. Structured data can make a page eligible for certain rich results when it correctly describes visible page content, but Google does not guarantee that a rich result will appear. A featured snippet is an excerpt selected by Google’s systems, not a rich result triggered by adding schema. See Google’s guidance on structured data.

If you use structured data for a supported rich-result type, make it accurate, keep it consistent with what readers can see, and validate it. Do not add FAQ markup solely in the hope of winning a featured snippet or an AI Overview.

Featured snippets, rich results, and AI search features are different

Search presentation What it is What a WordPress publisher can do
Featured snippet An excerpt Google selects from a page to answer a query. Publish a clear, useful page that Google can access; Google decides whether to select it.
Structured-data rich result A search presentation that may be available for certain supported types of structured data. Use accurate markup that matches visible content; eligibility does not guarantee display.
AI Overviews and AI Mode Google AI search features that may show links to supporting web pages. Follow foundational SEO practices and ensure the page is indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. There is no special schema requirement for these features.

Google’s guidance for AI features says eligibility does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, served, or shown as a supporting link. Google Search Central’s May 15, 2026 announcement also said that SEO best practices remain relevant because Google’s generative AI features in Search are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems.

What WordPress site owners can control about snippets

Google primarily builds search snippets from page content. It may use the meta description when that seems more accurate, and the text shown can vary from one search to another. A description entered in WordPress or an SEO plugin is therefore a suggestion, not a guaranteed search excerpt. Google’s documentation explains how snippets are generated and controlled.

Google supports controls that restrict how much page text may be shown or exclude text from snippets:

  • nosnippet prevents Google from showing a text snippet for the page.
  • max-snippet limits the maximum length of a snippet.
  • data-nosnippet can exclude a portion of a page from snippets.

These are display controls, not ways to win a featured snippet. A low max-snippet setting may make a featured snippet less likely, but Google does not publish a minimum setting that guarantees suppression. Use such restrictions only when you intend to limit what Google displays.

Correct common answer-box and AI optimization myths

Google’s guidance on generative AI content says there is no ideal page length, no need to divide content into tiny chunks for AI, and no Search visibility benefit from adding an llms.txt file. Those statements describe Google Search; they should not be taken as rules for every AI product or platform.

For a WordPress site, the defensible approach is straightforward: make pages useful to people, structure them so readers can find the answer, and avoid technical settings that prevent Google from accessing the content. No special “answer box” switch, plugin, answer length, or schema recipe can guarantee placement.
