Gemini in Google Drive can answer questions about an image or summarize it in a side panel, so you can work with the file without moving it to another tool. Open the image in Drive, select Ask Gemini, then enter a prompt. Google announced image support in August 2025; it is a documented Drive feature, not a new 2026 launch.
How to analyze an image in Google Drive with Gemini
- On a computer, open Google Drive.
- Double-click the image file to open it.
- Click Ask Gemini at the top right.
- In the side panel, choose a suggested prompt or type your own, then press Enter.
Google first announced image support in the Drive Gemini side panel in August 2025. Google’s current Help page documents the image workflow and its available prompt examples.
What you can ask Gemini to do with an image
Google lists several example tasks for images in Drive:
- Summarize what the image shows.
- Extract visible text from the image.
- Pull receipt or invoice information into a table.
- Generate alternate text for the image.
- Write a story about the image.
For a focused result, state what you need and how you want it presented. For example, ask Gemini to extract the date, vendor, and total from a receipt and format the details as a table. Treat the result as a draft: Google documents these tasks but does not guarantee perfect text recognition or interpretation.

Who can use Gemini in Drive
Google says Gemini in Drive requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. Its Help page does not provide a complete plan-by-plan and region-by-region eligibility list, so access depends on the account and current availability. Check Google’s Drive Help page and your account’s plan rather than assuming the feature is available to every Drive user.
Check Gemini’s answer against the image
When accuracy matters, compare extracted text and details with the image itself. In Drive, inspect the sources Gemini used; for a single-image question, confirm the image is among them. This is especially important for financial details, small or unclear text, and generated alternate text.

Google lists images alongside text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, and videos as file types supported by Gemini in Drive. For requests about folders with many files or subfolders, Google cautions that Gemini may not incorporate every file into its response. You can narrow a request by selecting particular files or folders, then check the cited sources before relying on the answer.

Image analysis is one use of Ask Gemini in Drive. In a separate March 10, 2026 announcement, Google described broader questions across documents, email, calendar, and the web. That wider capability is not the date or definition of the original image-support announcement.
