There is no universal setting in Windows, Outlook, Gmail, or webmail that makes every email window open maximized. The best approach depends on whether the message is in a reading pane, a separate desktop window, or a browser pop-up.
In Classic Outlook, resize and close a standalone message window so Outlook can reuse its size. In New Outlook and webmail, maximize each separate window with Windows key + Up Arrow.
Maximize an email window immediately
When an email is open in its own window, click the Maximize button in the upper-right corner. You can also press Windows key + Up Arrow.
This maximizes the active window. Make sure the email window—not the main Outlook window—is active first. It is a Windows command, not an Outlook preference, and does not guarantee the next message will open maximized.

Classic Outlook for Windows
Make received messages open at nearly full screen
Classic Outlook generally reuses the size and position of the most recently closed standalone message window. Use this behavior to create a nearly full-screen default:
- Open an email in its own window by double-clicking the message in the message list.
- If it is maximized, click Restore Down.
- Move the window to the monitor’s upper-left corner.
- Drag its lower-right corner to the monitor’s lower-right corner.
- Close the message window.
- Open another message to test whether Outlook reused the size.
The result may be a restored window fitted to the screen rather than a technically maximized window, but it occupies practically the same area.
Holding Ctrl while clicking the message window’s X after resizing it is a commonly recommended workaround that may help Classic Outlook save the size and position. It is not a documented Outlook option and is not guaranteed on every build.
Open replies and forwards in separate windows
To make replies and forwards open separately in Classic Outlook:

Change the Reading Pane instead
A message in the Reading Pane is not a separate window. Its size is controlled by Outlook’s main window and layout settings.
- Select the View tab.
- In the Layout group, select Reading Pane.
- Choose Right, Bottom, or Off.
Choose Off if you want to open messages in standalone windows, then double-click a message. If you prefer the Reading Pane, maximize the main Outlook window instead.
New Outlook for Windows
New Outlook is a different application from Classic Outlook. Microsoft says it became generally available in August 2024. As of 2026, its popped-out message windows do not consistently retain size or maximized state in the same way as Classic Outlook, so you may need to maximize each window manually.

- Open the message in a separate window, usually by double-clicking it.
- Click the Maximize button, or press Windows key + Up Arrow.
If a reply initially appears in the Reading Pane, select Pop Out to move it into a separate window. Microsoft does not document a setting that automatically maximizes every popped-out message or reply.
If you need Classic Outlook’s window-reuse behavior and it is installed, open the toggle in the upper-right corner of New Outlook and choose Switch back to classic Outlook or Use classic Outlook this time. You can also launch Outlook (classic) from the Start menu. The toggle may not appear if Classic Outlook is not installed.
Outlook on the web and Outlook.com
Outlook on the web primarily displays messages in the browser window or Reading Pane. A separate message window is a browser pop-up or another browser window, not a native Outlook desktop message window. Outlook.com does not provide an “always maximize” setting for message windows.
If a separate browser window opens, maximize it using the browser’s window control or press Windows key + Up Arrow. For messages that remain on the page, maximize the main browser window.

Gmail in a desktop browser
Gmail has no setting that automatically opens every email in a maximized operating-system window. To open a conversation in a separate browser window, hold Shift while selecting it. Gmail’s compose and reply windows may also include a Pop out control.
After the browser window appears, press Windows key + Up Arrow. The popped-out message is controlled by the browser and Windows, so Gmail cannot force it to remain maximized in future windows.
Keep email windows on the correct monitor
If windows move to the wrong screen after docking a laptop or changing monitors, enable Windows 11’s monitor-location setting:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Expand Multiple displays.
- Turn on Remember window locations based on monitor connection.
You can also enable Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. These settings help preserve placement across monitor changes; they do not force email windows to maximize.

Why the window still opens small
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook is maximized but the email is not | The email is a separate top-level window. | Focus the email and press Windows key + Up Arrow. |
| Classic Outlook does not reuse the expected size | Window size may not persist correctly after a restart, update, display change, or use of window-management utilities. | Resize a standalone message, close it, and test again. |
| New Outlook does not remember the maximized state | New Outlook does not consistently save popped-out window dimensions like Classic Outlook. | Maximize each window manually, or switch to Classic Outlook if available. |
| The message is visible only in a panel | It is in the Reading Pane, not a separate window. | Use View > Reading Pane > Off, or maximize the main Outlook window. |
| The window opens on another monitor | Docking, monitor arrangements, or display scaling may have changed. | Enable Remember window locations based on monitor connection. |
| The window is maximized but the email uses only part of it | This may be a content-rendering or display-scaling issue. | Check Windows display scaling and update Outlook; there is no documented universal fix for every New Outlook rendering problem. |
Settings and commands that do not solve this
- “Always open emails maximized”: There is no current documented Outlook option with this name.
- Maximizing the Outlook shortcut: A shortcut’s launch setting applies to the Outlook application, not automatically to every message, reply, or compose window it creates.
- /cleanviews: This switch resets Outlook views. It is not a documented command for maximizing message windows and is not a reliable fix for popped-out window sizing, particularly in New Outlook.
- Open replies and forwards in a new window: This changes where replies appear, not their size.
Best method by email app
| Application | Most reliable approach |
|---|---|
| Classic Outlook | Resize a standalone message to the screen edges, close it, and test whether Outlook reuses the size. |
| New Outlook | Press Windows key + Up Arrow whenever a popped-out message is not maximized. |
| Outlook.com | Maximize the browser window or separate browser pop-up. |
| Gmail | Use Shift-click or Pop out, then maximize the browser window. |
FAQ
Can Outlook automatically maximize every email window?
No. Outlook has no universal documented setting that forces every received message, reply, forward, or compose window to open maximized. Classic Outlook generally reuses the size and position of the most recently closed standalone message window, while New Outlook does not consistently do so.
What is the fastest way to maximize an email?
Click the email window to give it focus, then press Windows key + Up Arrow. This works for separate Outlook message windows and browser pop-ups.
Why does maximizing Outlook not maximize the email?
A standalone email is a separate window with its own size and state. Maximize the message window itself rather than the main Outlook window.
How do I make Outlook replies open in a new window?
In Classic Outlook, select File > Options > Mail, scroll to Replies and forwards, enable Open replies and forwards in a new window, and select OK.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does /cleanviews fix small Outlook email windows?
No. /cleanviews resets Outlook views; it is not a documented maximize-window command and is not a reliable fix for popped-out message sizing.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: There is no universal always-maximized email setting. In Classic Outlook, resize a standalone message to fill the screen and close it so Outlook can try to reuse that size. In New Outlook, Outlook.com, and Gmail, maximize each separate message or browser window with Windows key + Up Arrow. To help keep windows on the correct monitor, enable Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Remember window locations based on monitor connection.
