There is no research-backed number of gaming hours that works for every couple. A workable agreement starts with the moments that leave one partner feeling ignored, then sets clear expectations for shared time, gaming, and responsibilities—with input from both people.
Start with the moment that feels bad, not a verdict about gaming
Raise the issue when neither of you is in the middle of a game or an argument. Describe what happened and how it affected you, rather than labeling your partner selfish or gaming itself a problem.
For example: “When I tried to tell you something while you were playing and didn’t get a response, I felt shut out. Can we set aside time when we’re both available?” This is a practical example, not a script tested in research.
Be specific about what “ignored” means in your relationship: a conversation that gets no response, plans that are canceled, attention divided during time together, or too little time that feels protected for the two of you. A 2012 clinical review recommends exploring how included or excluded each partner feels, while recognizing that gaming is not a problem for every couple (Hertlein and Hawkins, 2012).

Ask what each of you needs from the time
Make room for both experiences. Ask the partner who games what it provides—perhaps relaxation, competition, social connection, or a commitment to teammates. The other partner can explain what feeling considered would look like in concrete terms. Neither person has to prove that their needs are legitimate before you can discuss a plan.
A gaming session may be social time with friends, just as shared couple time may be important to the other partner. The useful question is whether the way time is currently arranged works for both people and leaves essential responsibilities and commitments covered.

Build a mutual agreement with visible terms
Make the schedule together rather than treating one person’s preferred schedule as the default. Hertlein and Hawkins’s clinical review notes that gaming-group schedules can take precedence over household plans, sometimes leaving the other partner with little input. A jointly made plan can account for both gaming commitments and the rest of life.
- Protected couple time: Agree on periods when gaming is put away and both people are available to each other.
- Planned gaming time: Decide together which windows or nights work, instead of leaving the schedule open-ended.
- Responsibilities: Identify what must be handled for household, parenting, work, and sleep needs before or around a session.
- Notice about fixed commitments: Agree how much notice to give when a team session is scheduled or a game may run late.
- A way to finish and reconnect: Decide how someone can complete a match or reach a stopping point, then return attention to the conversation or plan.
- A review date: Choose a time to check whether the arrangement feels fair and is working in practice.
These are planning ideas, not a research-tested formula. Fit them to your routines and make the terms specific enough that both of you can tell whether they are being followed.

Choose an agreement you can review, not a rule that polices minutes
There is no universal, research-validated gaming-hour limit for couples in the sources available. The right amount depends on your needs and obligations, so a timer or app cannot settle whether either partner is getting enough attention or whether commitments are being kept.
Compare possible arrangements by asking:
- Did both partners have a real say in the schedule?
- Is protected time together clear?
- Does the plan account for gaming commitments and household duties?
- Are the terms concrete enough to follow?
- Can you review and adjust the plan without blame?
At the agreed check-in, discuss whether plans were kept, whether together-time felt protected, and whether either person feels ignored, controlled, or perpetually on call. Adjust what is not working rather than turning the review into a tally of minutes.

What the evidence says—and what it does not
Research on gaming and couple relationships is limited; the available findings do not establish that gaming itself causes conflict or aggression, or that a particular schedule improves a relationship.
A 2012 study of 1,333 heterosexual couples found that, among men in that sample, time spent gaming was associated with greater conflict about media time and content; media conflict was in turn associated with physical and relational aggression. Those are associations in a specific study, not proof that gaming caused conflict or evidence about every couple (Coyne and colleagues, 2012).

In Pew Research Center’s survey of 4,860 U.S. adults, conducted online October 16–28, 2019, 15% of partnered respondents said they were at least sometimes bothered by how much time their partner spent playing video games. That is a U.S.-specific historical survey result, not a 2026 estimate or a measure of relationship harm (Pew Research Center, 2020).
When the problem is bigger than a schedule
If repeated conversations lead nowhere, responsibilities are routinely neglected, gaming continues despite serious consequences, or discussions become intimidating or unsafe, scheduling alone may not be enough. Consider seeking appropriate outside support. High playtime by itself does not establish an addiction, and the sources cited here do not define a diagnostic threshold or a tested referral point for couples.
If either partner feels unsafe, prioritize immediate safety and seek appropriate local support.
