There are two different ways a brand can reach people through AI: buy an ad in a platform that sells chatbot or AI-search placements, or improve the quality and accessibility of information that may be surfaced organically. Neither route guarantees that a chatbot will mention or recommend your brand. Start with sound Search fundamentals, then test paid placements only where the platform documents availability and reporting.

What “advertising to chatbots” can mean

The phrase can describe paid advertising inside an AI product, but it is also used loosely for efforts to influence organic answers. Those are not the same activity:

Approach What the brand controls What it cannot promise
Organic discovery Whether its pages and business information are accessible, useful, accurate, and eligible for a platform’s ordinary discovery systems. A citation, recommendation, or appearance in a particular AI answer.
Paid placement Whether it participates in an available advertising product and runs eligible campaigns, subject to platform rules. Access in every market, a specific placement, or complete reporting for every AI surface.

For Google Search, generative AI visibility is tied to ordinary Search eligibility. Google says pages must meet its technical requirements and be eligible for a Search snippet. It also says there is no need to create special AI text files, split every page into tiny chunks, or add special schema markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features recommends clear structure and unique, valuable, people-first content instead.

Paid products are separate. Google documents ads in AI Overviews through eligible existing campaigns; OpenAI documents a distinct ChatGPT Ads product with country-dependent advertiser access.

How to build a brand’s organic visibility

Answer real customer questions with distinctive information

Build pages around questions customers actually ask, and make the answers specific to your products, services, and expertise. Explain important details clearly, keep them current, and avoid publishing generic pages solely to target AI systems. Google’s guidance is to continue standard SEO practices and create unique, useful content—not to write in a special style just for generative AI.

Keep technical Search foundations in place

Make sure important pages can be crawled and indexed, use a clear site structure, and follow Google’s normal Search technical requirements. Use structured data where it is relevant to supported Search features; Google does not require special schema markup for AI features.

Maintain business and product information

For brands with products, services, or local locations, keep details accurate on the site and in relevant Google Business Profiles or Merchant Center feeds. Google says these sources can help product, service, and local-business information appear in AI responses and other Search results.

Do not buy artificial mentions or promise a ranking hack

No checklist can force a chatbot to cite or recommend a brand. Google says it does not use special files such as llms.txt for Search, and warns that inauthentic mentions are not helpful. Treat vendors’ claims of guaranteed “ranking in ChatGPT” or guaranteed citation with skepticism.

How to advertise in AI Overviews

Google says ads may appear for a subset of queries when an AI Overview is shown, commercial intent is detected, and a relevant, quality ad is available. The system considers both the user’s query and the AI Overview context. Eligible formats are text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns; this is not a separate campaign type that guarantees an AI Overview placement.

As described in Google Ads Help, the documented availability is English-language AI Overviews on mobile and desktop in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States. Check the current documentation before planning, because country and product availability can change.

Google says it does not currently provide segmented reporting for ads shown within AI Overviews. Campaign results therefore cannot be cleanly separated into AI Overview placements using that reporting. Google also describes the product as being at an early stage.

How to assess ChatGPT Ads

OpenAI’s Help Center says ads may appear for ChatGPT Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads. Advertiser access varies by country: businesses can check country status in Ads Manager, but signing up does not grant access before a country is supported. Confirm current availability and suitability before committing budget.

OpenAI says ChatGPT ads are separate from answers, advertisers do not influence responses about an ad a user shares with ChatGPT, and conversations remain private from advertisers. It also says ad interactions do not enter ChatGPT memory and that it does not sell user data. These are OpenAI’s stated product principles; they are not a guarantee about every advertising platform.

OpenAI’s October 5, 2026 update describes visual ad formats and measurement integrations. It names Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp for conversion-data connections and lists attribution and measurement partners. The same update reports partner examples: DV Rockerbox said WeightWatchers’ attributed cost per acquisition on ChatGPT Ads was 15.3% lower than its blended paid-search benchmark; WorkMagic reported statistically significant lift for Dose, with 67% of incremental purchases from new customers; and Triple Whale said 93% of Portland Leather’s ChatGPT Ads visitors were new. These are partner-reported case examples, not general performance benchmarks. OpenAI says its incrementality work is still at an early stage.

How to plan a practical test

  1. Set the objective. Choose the business outcome first—such as qualified leads, purchases, or local inquiries—and define how you will recognize a useful result.
  2. Establish a baseline. For organic visibility in Google’s generative AI features on Search and Discover, use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console where available. For paid activity, prepare campaign attribution and conversion reporting before launch.
  3. Verify eligibility and access. Check the platform’s current country, language, device, user-plan, campaign, and advertiser-access requirements for the audience you want to reach.
  4. Prepare conversion data and suitability controls. For ChatGPT Ads, assess whether your offer and audience fit the product, whether conversion data is ready, and whether your ads meet suitability requirements. OpenAI describes automated review with human oversight and placement guardrails; it also describes a Negative Phrases option for qualifying advertisers.
  5. Run a bounded experiment. Keep the test tied to a defined audience and objective. Do not interpret a single platform or partner case study as a forecast for your own results.
  6. Review what the platform can actually report. Separate observed clicks and conversions from attribution claims, and distinguish platform-reported results from independent evidence. Google’s current lack of segmented AI Overview ad reporting limits placement-specific analysis.

What the evidence says about AI Search and advertising

Google reported on May 21, 2025, that usage increased by over 10% for the types of queries that show AI Overviews in its biggest markets, including the United States and India. That figure is Google’s statement about those query types and markets; it is not a claim that all Google searches increased by that amount.

For organic Google surfaces, Search Console is the first-party measurement option Google points site owners to. Google cautions that third-party tools cannot access its internal ranking or AI systems, so external visibility estimates should not be presented as direct access to Google’s systems or proof of a guaranteed citation.
