There is no universal best setup: your headphones or TV speakers, room, display, game, and comfort needs all affect the result.
1. Set up audio for your headphones or TV speakers
Open Settings > Sound and choose the path that matches your current setup. A headset is not required; PS5 offers a TV-speaker 3D-audio setup as well.
Using headphones
- Open 3D Audio (Headphones) in the Sound settings.
- Create a personalized profile by listening to sounds from different positions and angles, or try one of the five preset profiles.
- Enable the profile you prefer, launch your horror game, and compare 3D audio with stereo during the same scene. Listen for whether footsteps, environmental sounds, and other cues feel easier to place; keep the mode that sounds more natural to you.
Sony describes 3D audio as sound intended to make you feel inside the game, but that is the feature’s goal, not a guarantee that every listener or game will prefer it. Sony’s setup instructions are at How to set up 3D audio on PS5 consoles.
If you already own suitable headphones, try them before buying anything. Sony’s PULSE 3D Wireless Headset manual describes selecting headphone audio output on PS5, but a dedicated headset is optional.

Using TV speakers
- Open 3D Audio (TV) and follow the console’s on-screen measurement using the wireless controller’s built-in microphone.
- Stay in your usual listening position while measuring, then compare 3D audio with stereo in the game.
- If you move the TV or seat, or substantially change the room environment, measure again.
If TV-speaker 3D audio sounds poor, check that the speakers are not blocked. As a troubleshooting test, turn off the TV’s own surround-sound processing and compare again; stacked processing can change the result.
Optional: Audio Focus
With headphones, PS5 Audio Focus can emphasize quiet sounds in certain frequency ranges. Try it if quieter cues are difficult to hear, but treat it as a listening option rather than a guaranteed improvement for every player or game. 2. Match video output and HDR to your display
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The PS5 detects the connected display and selects an available resolution automatically. You can inspect the HDMI device information to see what the display reports for resolution, VRR, and HDR support. Keep the console settings within the capabilities of both the display and the game.
Choose how HDR is handled
- On When Supported: Games and apps that do not support HDR are displayed in SDR.
- Always On: The console converts non-HDR-compatible games and apps to HDR output.
Use Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration steps for your display. There is no single numeric slider setting that suits every TV or monitor, so judge the result on your own screen and avoid brightening dark scenes by default: shadow and limited visibility may be part of the game’s intended atmosphere.

VRR, 120 Hz, and ALLM are additional options that require compatible displays and supported games. Their availability and effect vary by setup; they concern display behavior such as motion or latency rather than providing a universal horror-picture preset. 3. Pick a game preset, then check the game itself
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. For supported PS5 games, choose the priority that fits the experience you want:

The names describe targets, not a promise that every game offers identical results. Support and implementation vary by title. Sony’s game preset instructions also cover first- and third-person camera movement, subtitles, audio language, and, where offered, difficulty. These presets apply to PS5 games and may not apply to every game.
After setting the console preset, check the horror game’s own options menu. If available, you can test brightness, motion blur, film grain, or camera settings one at a time, then revisit a representative scene. Keep dark areas as the developers intended unless visibility or comfort makes an adjustment necessary; the console documentation does not establish universal values for these in-game controls.

4. Tune accessibility and comfort for your session
Use Settings > Accessibility to explore options such as text size, high contrast, color correction, and reduced motion. These can make menus, visual effects, or long sessions more comfortable without making your play less valid or less immersive.
Closed captions can transcribe dialogue and, in supported games or media, provide text for audio cues. Their availability and detail depend on the content, so check the game’s own caption settings too. Color inversion reverses text and background colors, but it turns HDR off—a relevant trade-off if you use HDR. Sony explains these options in How to use accessibility settings on PS5 consoles.
5. Make a short in-game comparison
Change one category at a time so you can tell what helped. Use a scene with both quiet sounds and varied lighting, and compare the same moment rather than relying on the settings screen alone.
- Compare 3D audio and stereo using your usual headphones or TV-speaker position.
- Check the HDR result in a dark scene and a brighter scene; adjust only through the console’s calibration or the game’s available controls.
- Compare Performance Mode and Resolution Mode if the game supports both, focusing on the motion or detail you care about.
- Keep any accessibility or comfort options that make play more usable, then retest the scene with those enabled.
Game support and individual preferences differ, so the useful setup is the one that improves your experience without undermining comfort or the atmosphere you want.
