Choose the right setting for the caller

These controls solve different problems: a Focus allowance applies to the selected Focus, Emergency Bypass is a per-contact override for sounds, and unknown-caller settings govern numbers that are not recognized as saved contacts.

Allow selected people in the Focus you use
- Open Settings > Focus and select the relevant Focus, such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, or Work.
- Tap People or Choose People, depending on the iOS interface.
- Select Allow Notifications From and add the contacts whose notifications you want to receive.
- Review the Focus’s call options. If you want calls from a group as well as named contacts, choose the applicable option there. You can also allow repeated calls: Apple defines this as two or more calls from the same person within three minutes.
Make the change in the Focus that is actually active; configuring Do Not Disturb will not change a different active Focus. Apple describes Focus as allowing you to select people and apps whose notifications you receive or silence. See Apple’s Focus notification settings guide and Apple’s guide to setting up a Focus.
Make an emergency contact audible through silencing
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit, then Ringtone.
- Turn on Emergency Bypass and save the change.
Emergency Bypass is per contact and applies to the ringtone. To let that person’s text alerts sound through as well, return to the contact, open Text Tone, and enable Emergency Bypass there separately. Apple says, “Regardless of your Focus settings, you can allow calls from your emergency contacts to come through.” This changes how the phone alerts; it cannot ensure cellular coverage or carrier delivery. Decide how unsaved callers should be handled
If an important number is not in Contacts, open Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers. Apple documents these choices:
- Never: unsaved numbers ring like other calls.
- Ask Reason for Calling: the caller is screened before the iPhone rings.
- Silence: unsaved calls are silenced and sent to voicemail.
Save recurring important numbers—such as family, a child’s school, or a doctor—in Contacts so iPhone recognizes them as known callers. A separate unknown-caller filter moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into an Unknown Callers list. That filter organizes call history; it is distinct from the screening and silence choices that affect how an incoming call is handled. See Apple’s guide to managing unknown callers.

Troubleshoot calls that still do not ring
If a call goes straight to voicemail or the iPhone stays quiet, check these causes in order:
- Silent mode: turn it off if the phone should ring audibly.
- An active Focus: open Control Center and see whether Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Work, or another Focus is on. Disable it or update that Focus’s allowed people list.
- Unknown-caller handling: review Settings > Apps > Phone and the Screen Unknown Callers selection.
- Call Filtering and blocked numbers: check Call Filtering and review Blocked Contacts in case the caller was blocked by mistake.
- Weak or unavailable cellular reception: consider Wi-Fi Calling. It appears in settings only if your carrier offers it.
These checks follow Apple’s guidance for calls that do not ring and go straight to voicemail.

What changes after an emergency call
Apple notes that after you place an emergency call, some features that block or silence incoming calls may be disabled briefly so emergency services can call back. Examples include Do Not Disturb and Silence Unknown Callers. See Apple’s guidance on using SOS to contact emergency services.
Setting names and screens can vary by iOS version. If a label is different on your iPhone, look within the relevant Focus, contact, or Phone settings for the corresponding control.
