To adjust dialogue, subtitles, or voice settings, open the game’s pause or main menu and look under Settings or Options. Check Audio, Audio & Subtitles, Language, and Accessibility—the names, locations, and available controls vary by game and platform.
Find the settings in your game
- Open the game’s pause menu or main menu and select Settings or Options.
- Look in Audio or Audio & Subtitles for dialogue, speech, music, effects, voice chat, audio output, voice language, and subtitle controls.
- Check Language for spoken and displayed language choices, then Accessibility for text size, subtitle backgrounds, speaker identification, mono audio, or other access features.
- Change the relevant settings, apply or confirm them if prompted, and return to gameplay to check the result. If a setting is missing, consult the game’s official support page and confirm that its instructions match your platform and version.
There is no universal menu path or standard set of options. A feature may be named differently, placed in another menu, or unavailable in a particular game or version.
Make dialogue easier to hear
If the game provides separate volume controls, raise Dialogue, Speech, or Voice and lower Music or Effects as needed. Raising only the master volume increases everything together. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 explains that independently adjustable audio levels can help when music or effects compete with speech; this is design guidance, not a promise that every game offers separate sliders.
Try speech-clarity and listening options
Depending on the game, useful options may include voice boost, center-pan dialogue, audio balance, mono audio, or a listening mode intended for headphones, television speakers, or low-volume play. Their effects differ: check the game’s description before enabling them.

For example, PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök accessibility documentation describes voice boost as improving character-dialogue clarity while potentially affecting music and effects clarity during speech. Its center-pan dialogue option routes character dialogue through the center channel but removes panning and surround information. These are title-specific trade-offs, not general behavior for every game.
Insomniac’s support article for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales lists listening modes including Home Theater, Maximum, Television, Headphones, and Midnight, as well as left/right audio balance and mono audio. For the documented PS5 version, 3D audio must be turned off to enable the mono-audio option. These settings are optional; you do not need new audio hardware to change in-game volume or subtitles.

Turn on and improve subtitles
Enable subtitles in Audio, Audio & Subtitles, or Accessibility. If text is difficult to read, look for a larger size, a background or blur setting, stronger text contrast, or speaker-name color controls. Captions for non-speech sounds and speaker labels are separate features, and a game may not provide them.
Official examples show how much subtitle controls can differ. God of War Ragnarök documents subtitle and caption blur, a None/Light/Dark background, and direction indicators. Insomniac’s Spider-Man support article lists subtitle size, background, subtitle color, and speaker-name color. Those options do not establish what another game supports.

Subtitles may not cover every spoken line. Bungie’s Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 accessibility page notes that some ambient vendor or NPC dialogue may not have corresponding subtitles.
Choose voice and text languages separately when available
Some games let you select spoken dialogue independently from interface or subtitle language; others tie language choices together or provide fewer options. Check both Audio and Language, and verify the specific game’s support information rather than assuming a voice-language option exists.

For a version-specific example, EA’s Star Wars: Squadrons settings page for Xbox One documents speech-language choices of English, German, Spanish, and French, alongside an in-game speech subtitle toggle. Insomniac’s Spider-Man support article documents an English voice-over option for certain supported system-language configurations. These examples apply to the documented titles and configurations, not to games generally.

If you cannot find the setting you want
- Search the game’s official support page for the title plus the setting name, such as “subtitle size,” “dialogue volume,” or “voice language.” Verify the platform and game version in the instructions.
- Check more than one menu: audio controls may be under Audio, subtitles under Accessibility, and language choices under Language.
- Distinguish spoken-language settings from subtitle or interface-language settings; they may not be linked.
- If the game offers no separate speech control, no subtitle adjustment, or no desired language, its current version may not support that feature.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 and Game Publishing Guide accessibility criteria describe design considerations such as independently adjustable audio, mono and spatial audio, and subtitle options including speaker identification, font size, and solid backgrounds. They are recommendations and criteria for game design; they do not mean a specific title implements those features.
