To adjust an Excel column, drag the right edge of its heading, double-click that edge to AutoFit, or enter a specific width in the formatting controls. Use dragging for visual adjustments, AutoFit when content should determine the width, and an exact value or copied width for a consistent layout. The paths below distinguish Windows ribbon instructions from Mac menu instructions where they differ.
Choose the right method for the job
| Method | Best for | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Drag a boundary | Quick visual adjustment | You choose the width by eye |
| AutoFit | Making content visible | Excel sizes each selected column to its contents |
| Enter a width | Repeatable layouts | A specific width value |
| Copy a column width | Matching another column | The source column’s width |
| Set a default width | Changing the baseline for a sheet | A new default for columns |
Microsoft’s instructions cover Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016 for the general controls, with separate guidance for Mac. Menu labels can vary by platform and version. See Microsoft’s column width and row height instructions and Mac instructions.
1. Drag a column boundary to set its width by eye
- Find the column heading at the top of the worksheet, such as A or B.
- Move the pointer to the right edge of that heading until the resize pointer appears.
- Drag the boundary right to widen the column or left to narrow it, then release.
This is the fastest way to make a one-off visual change. It does not require you to choose or remember a width value.
2. Resize several selected columns together
- Select the column headings you want to change. To select adjacent columns, drag across their headings; use the usual multi-selection method for nonadjacent columns in your version of Excel.
- Drag the right boundary of one of the selected headings to the desired width.
Excel applies the same width adjustment to the selected columns, which is useful when you want a uniform layout rather than individually sized columns.

3. AutoFit from the ribbon
- Select one or more column headings.
- In Windows and the standard ribbon interface, choose Home > Cells > Format > AutoFit Column Width.
Excel adjusts each selected column to fit its contents. Because the fit is content-based, columns may end up with different widths.
4. AutoFit by double-clicking
- To fit one column, move to the right edge of its heading.
- Double-click the boundary. On Mac, double-click the selected separator between column headings.
- To fit every column on a worksheet, select the entire sheet and double-click a boundary between two column headings.
Microsoft documents the all-column shortcut as selecting Select All and double-clicking any boundary between two column headings. AutoFit all columns only when the contents make a sensible width; a long entry can make its column much wider than the rest.

5. Enter an exact width in Windows or the standard ribbon
- Select the column or columns.
- Choose Home > Cells > Format > Column Width.
- Enter the width value and confirm.
You can also right-click a selected column heading and choose Column Width. An exact value is useful when you need a deliberate, repeatable layout.
6. Enter an exact width on Mac
- Select the column or columns.
- Choose Format > Column > Width.
- Enter the width and confirm.
The Mac menu path differs from the standard ribbon instructions. If your Excel version shows different labels, use its equivalent column-width control.

7. Copy a width or change the default
Copy a width from another column
In Windows instructions, copy a cell from the column with the desired width, select the destination, then use Paste Special > Keep Source Columns Widths. Microsoft’s Mac guidance describes the corresponding Paste Special option as Column Widths. This copies the width rather than requiring you to estimate it by eye.
Change the default width
In the standard ribbon, choose Home > Cells > Format > Default Width and enter a value. To apply the change across the workbook, select all relevant sheet tabs before changing the default. Otherwise, the setting applies to the active worksheet.

How Excel measures column width
In Normal view, width is character-based: it reflects how many characters in the default font fit in a cell. Microsoft lists the column-width range as 0 to 255, with 0 hiding the column and 8.43 as the default. These are Excel product specifications; Microsoft’s support page does not state a publication date. In Page Layout view, width can be specified in inches, centimeters, or millimeters, and the ruler unit can be changed in Excel options.
A column has one width for all its rows; it cannot be narrow for one row and wider for another. Microsoft puts it this way: “Individual rows and columns can have only one setting.”

Fix common width and visibility problems
A cell displays #####
A series of number signs can mean a number or date does not fit in the cell’s current formatted display. Widen the column, or shorten the number or date format. See Microsoft’s guidance on correcting a ##### error.
Long text makes a column too wide
Instead of widening the column to fit a long entry on one line, use Wrap Text. The text can then appear on multiple lines within the chosen column width. Microsoft explains this in its Wrap Text instructions.
Wrapped text is cut off vertically
If all wrapped lines are not visible, the row may have a fixed height or the cell may be merged. Adjust the row height or use AutoFit Row Height where appropriate. Merged cells can affect automatic row sizing; see Microsoft’s row height and column width guidance.
