You can add Thunderbolt to a desktop PC with a motherboard-supported Thunderbolt PCIe add-in card (AIC). The key is an exact match: confirm your motherboard model and revision on the card maker’s compatibility list, then check the required PCIe slot, Thunderbolt header, firmware settings, and any display-signal or power cabling before you buy. A spare PCIe slot or USB-C port alone does not establish Thunderbolt support.

Check whether your motherboard supports a Thunderbolt add-in card

Compatibility is specific to the motherboard and card combination. Start by identifying the full motherboard model and revision; check the board itself or system information, then consult the card manufacturer’s current support list and the motherboard manual. Do not assume that a card will work just because it fits a PCIe slot.

  • Supported model: Confirm the exact motherboard model, and revision if listed, on the card maker’s compatibility list. GIGABYTE says its GC-MAPLE RIDGE is for listed GIGABYTE boards with a Thunderbolt header, and that support varies by board specification.
  • PCIe slot: Check the motherboard and card manuals for the required slot and lane configuration. The recommended slot can vary by board. For example, GIGABYTE’s GC-TITAN RIDGE installation manual illustrates a PCIEX4 slot; that example is not a universal requirement.
  • Thunderbolt header: Verify that the board has the specific header the card requires, and that the included or specified cable connects the correct pins. A card’s header connector is not interchangeable with any motherboard connector that happens to look similar.
  • BIOS or firmware: Check the board maker’s setup instructions for required Thunderbolt or USB4 settings and firmware support. ASUS documents a Thunderbolt/USB4 BIOS setting for a supported example, but menu names and availability differ by model.
  • Display and auxiliary power: If you want video output through the card, check whether the discrete graphics card must feed it a DisplayPort signal. Also verify any auxiliary power requirements and included cables in the card manual.
  • Operating system and drivers: Confirm support and driver availability for your OS and exact card revision using the vendor’s current documentation.

Choose a card by the supported combination, not just its name

Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 are different product generations, and the connector shape alone does not confirm a card’s capabilities or motherboard compatibility. Use the card’s exact model and revision when checking support.

Card example What the official product information establishes Check for your system
ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 ASUS documents installation in a model-recommended PCIe 3.0 slot, a 14-1-pin motherboard TB_HEADER connection, and a card-specific supported-model list. Exact supported board, recommended slot, BIOS setting, driver, and any required GPU DisplayPort or power wiring.
ASRock Thunderbolt 4 AIC R2.0 ASRock specifies a PCIe Gen3x4 interface, two Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports, a TBT header, and 40Gbps bi-directional bandwidth per channel as a product specification—not an independent benchmark. ASRock’s supported motherboard list, required header and slot, BIOS behavior, and OS support.
GIGABYTE GC-MAPLE RIDGE GIGABYTE identifies it as a Thunderbolt 4 add-in card and provides a certified motherboard list with a Thunderbolt-header requirement. Exact listed board and revision, slot, OS support, and current card availability.
GIGABYTE GC-TITAN RIDGE GIGABYTE’s manual identifies the card as Thunderbolt 3 and illustrates connecting card J1 to motherboard THB_C, with a PCIEX4 slot example. Card revision, supported board list, BIOS and slot requirements, drivers, and OS support.

ASRock cautions in its Thunderbolt 4 AIC R2.0 manual: “However, the BIOS and hardware design of your motherboard may affect the function of Thunderbolt™ 4 Port on this card.” The practical implication is to verify the complete board-and-card pairing rather than relying on the card’s headline specification.

ASUS ThunderboltEX 5 Expansion Card – Dual Thunderbolt™ 5 USB-C Ports, 120Gbps Bandwidth, DisplayPort™ 2.1, PCIe 4.0 x4, USB4®, Compatible for Intel 800 Series Motherboards
  • Intel certified Thunderbolt 5 add-on card
  • Dual USB Type-C ports support up to 130 watts total of fast charging, and up to 96W for one device
  • Up to five Thunderbolt devices can be daisy-chained
  • Up to 120 Gbps of bandwidth for superfast data transfers and video output
  • DisplayPort 2.1 port supports up to three 8K 60 Hz displays with DSC

Install the card and connect the required cables

Use the manual for your exact card and motherboard as the controlling procedure. The steps below describe the general sequence; connector names, slot selection, and cabling are model-specific.

  1. Shut down and prepare the PC. Follow the card maker’s safety instructions, switch off and unplug the system, and open the chassis.
  2. Fit the card in the specified PCIe slot. Do not substitute another slot unless the documentation allows it. ASUS’s ThunderboltEX 4 quick-start guide calls for the model-recommended PCIe 3.0 slot.
  3. Connect the Thunderbolt header cable. Attach the card’s specified cable between its header and the motherboard’s matching Thunderbolt header. For the ASUS ThunderboltEX 4, the guide specifies the bundled 14-1-pin cable and the board’s TB_HEADER. Other cards use different connectors; GIGABYTE’s GC-TITAN RIDGE manual, for example, identifies card connector J1 and motherboard connector THB_C.
  4. Connect display signal if your setup requires it. If using a discrete GPU and the card’s manual calls for it, run a DisplayPort cable from the GPU’s DisplayPort output to the Thunderbolt card’s DisplayPort input. ASUS documents a Mini DisplayPort cable connection for its discrete-GPU setup. This routes video to the Thunderbolt output; it is separate from the motherboard header connection.
  5. Attach any required auxiliary power and finish installation. Check the exact card manual for power connectors and any additional cables before closing the chassis.

Enable firmware support and install drivers

After the hardware is installed, follow the motherboard and card maker’s setup instructions. Firmware labels and menus are not consistent across manufacturers or models.

  • 1. Intel Thunderbolt 4 JHL 8540 controller
  • 2. Ultrafast connectivity: Two Type-C ports with USB 4 support, up to 40Gb/s bi-directional bandwidth, per port allows you to connect up to five Thunderbolt-enabled devices in a daisy-chain configuration using Thunderbolt cables.
  • DisplayPort 1.4: support up to 8K resolution monitors
  • Quick charge solution: up to 100W quick charge
  1. Enter the motherboard BIOS/UEFI using the method specified in its manual.
  2. Enable the model-specific Thunderbolt or USB4 support setting if the board’s instructions require it. ASUS shows such a setting for one supported example; do not treat that menu path as universal.
  3. Save the firmware changes and restart the PC.
  4. Install the driver or software the card maker specifies for your card, motherboard, and operating system.
  5. Connect a Thunderbolt device and check that the system recognizes it. If it does not, recheck the header cable orientation and connection, PCIe slot, firmware configuration, driver, and any required display or auxiliary-power wiring against the manuals.

If the card is not detected or video does not work

  • Card not detected: Reconfirm that the exact motherboard model and revision are supported; then verify the specified PCIe slot, Thunderbolt header connection, BIOS/firmware setting, and driver.
  • Thunderbolt device connects but video is absent: Check whether your chosen card requires a DisplayPort input from the discrete GPU, and verify that the cable runs from the GPU output to the card input as specified.
  • Ports do not provide expected features: Confirm the card’s generation, exact revision, and supported configuration in its vendor documentation. A USB-C connector by itself does not prove Thunderbolt support or a particular Thunderbolt capability.

Compatibility lists, firmware options, drivers, revisions, and availability can change. Recheck the vendors’ current documentation for the exact motherboard and card before purchase or installation.
