To add structured JSON logging to a small SaaS app, keep the logger your framework already uses, define a stable event schema, attach request and trace context, redact sensitive data before emission, and send the resulting records to a runtime collector or logging backend. JSON is only the format: dependable structured logs also require consistent field names, types, and meanings.

What makes a JSON log structured?

A JSON object can still be difficult to search if one event calls a field requestId, another uses request_id, and a third embeds the identifier in a sentence. OpenTelemetry’s log data model cautions that a log encoded as JSON is not automatically structured: a stable schema is what makes its fields dependable to downstream tools.

For each field, agree on its name, data type, and meaning. Use one JSON object per event, and make sure repeated events use the same conventions. Field names below are an illustrative starting point, not a required standard:

{
  "timestamp": "2026-10-04T01:38:17.300559Z",
  "severity": "INFO",
  "message": "subscription.updated",
  "service.name": "billing-api",
  "deployment.environment": "production",
  "request.id": "req_…",
  "http.request.method": "POST",
  "http.response.status_code": 200
}

Align your names with your logger and telemetry conventions, then document the schema so developers and operators interpret fields consistently. OpenTelemetry’s log model distinguishes fields such as timestamp, observed timestamp, trace ID, span ID, severity, body, resource, instrumentation scope, and attributes. See its data model for the full set of concepts.

How to add structured JSON logging

  1. Inventory your current logger and output route

    Find which logger the web framework uses, where it is configured, and whether records currently go to a file, standard output, or a logging service. Keeping the existing logger is often practical: OpenTelemetry supports connecting existing logging solutions to its log model with appenders or bridges, rather than requiring every logging call to be rewritten. Configure any required bridge and SDK during application startup, following the documentation for your language and logger. OpenTelemetry’s logs documentation describes the model and integration approach.

  2. Define the event schema before changing call sites

    Choose a small set of common fields that will appear consistently, then add event-specific attributes only when they help explain what happened. A useful baseline is the event time, severity, message or body, service identity, event type, and request or interaction identifier. OWASP frames useful event context as “when, where, who and what” in its Logging Cheat Sheet.

    Write down acceptable types and meanings—for example, whether a status code is a number or a string—and apply them consistently. A stable schema helps searches and dashboards work across the app instead of forcing each query to account for multiple field variants.

  3. Log events with operational purpose

    Prefer a named event such as subscription.updated plus useful attributes over interpolated prose alone. For a web request, that may mean recording the request identifier, route or operation, outcome or status, and duration. For an application-specific event, record the action and its result. Do not automatically include every field available on a request; select context that supports monitoring, troubleshooting, or security analysis.

  4. Add request and trace context

    Generate or accept a trusted request or interaction identifier at the application boundary, then make it available throughout that request’s lifecycle so related log events share the same value. If distributed tracing is enabled, use supported OpenTelemetry instrumentation or a logging bridge to associate trace and span context with log records. OpenTelemetry describes time, execution context, and resource origin as useful correlation dimensions in its log data model.

    A request ID helps group events within an interaction; trace and span IDs can connect logs to the corresponding work across services. Ensure the identifier is trustworthy and propagated consistently rather than accepting arbitrary client input as authoritative.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  5. Redact sensitive data before emission

    Set a deliberate allowlist or redaction policy for request attributes. Do not log passwords, access tokens, encryption keys, database connection strings, payment-card or bank data, or sensitive personal information directly. OWASP recommends removing, masking, sanitizing, hashing, or encrypting sensitive values where appropriate in its Logging Cheat Sheet.

    Treat headers and request or response bodies as sensitive by default until reviewed. Apply filtering inside the application before records are written to standard output, a file, or a collector; removing a secret only after it reaches a logging backend is too late.

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. Emit records and verify ingestion

    For containerized or managed deployments, writing serialized JSON to stdout or stderr can let the execution environment collect records. This is platform-specific: some services ingest standard output directly, while virtual machines or other environments may need an agent or collector. OWASP advises considering an unbuffered event stream to stdout for management by the execution environment in its Logging Cheat Sheet.

    After deployment, inspect a real record in the destination backend and confirm that JSON is parsed, timestamps and severity are interpreted as intended, fields are searchable, exceptions and multiline messages remain usable, sensitive values are absent, and request or trace context is correlated. The correct ingestion route depends on the hosting platform.

Which fields should a JSON log contain?

Use enough context for the event’s purpose without turning logs into a copy of every request or database record. The following fields are practical starting points; the exact schema should fit the logger, telemetry conventions, and questions your team needs to answer.

Field group Useful contents Why it helps
Event identity Timestamp, severity, message or body, and a stable event type Supports ordering, prioritization, and searches for specific event classes.
Service origin Service name and deployment environment Distinguishes which application and environment emitted the record.
Interaction context Request or interaction ID; trace ID and span ID when tracing is enabled Groups events from one interaction and can connect logs to traced work.
Operation outcome Route or operation, HTTP method, response status, and duration when relevant Helps explain what the application was doing and whether it succeeded.
Event-specific attributes Only the additional values needed to understand that event, after sensitivity review Adds diagnostic context without indiscriminately recording request data.

OpenTelemetry’s log data model provides a common way to represent typed fields, attributes, resource context, and trace context. Adopt a convention deliberately; the example schema above is not mandatory.

Where should logs go?

Choose the destination separately from the JSON schema. A small team may start with its hosting platform’s built-in collection, use an agent or collector, or send logs to an observability service. Compare these practical considerations:

  • Collection route: Does the platform collect stdout and stderr automatically, or does it need an agent or collector?
  • Logger and telemetry fit: Can the current logger emit the fields you need and connect to OpenTelemetry?
  • Correlation and queries: Can operators search resource and service metadata alongside request, trace, and span context?
  • Operations and data handling: Check retention, access controls, data residency, ingestion costs, and the work required to run and maintain the setup.

For example, Google Cloud Logging’s structured-logging guidance documents JSON payloads and querying or indexing JSON paths. It describes stdout/stderr ingestion on some services and recommends an agent where available; virtual-machine guidance uses the Ops Agent. The page was last updated September 30, 2026, and the collection path varies by service.

Datadog’s documentation describes JSON logging and OpenTelemetry integrations for log and trace correlation with supported libraries. These are examples for teams evaluating those ecosystems, not universal recommendations. Verify the current integration guidance for your specific language, library, and hosting platform.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing JSON format without standardizing fields: Valid JSON does not ensure names, types, and meanings stay consistent.
  • Logging prose with no searchable context: Keep a readable message if useful, but add stable event names and relevant attributes.
  • Trusting every incoming value: Accept request identifiers only through a deliberate trust and propagation policy, and review request-derived fields for sensitive data.
  • Redacting in the backend only: Prevent sensitive values from leaving the application in the first place.
  • Assuming every platform handles stdout the same way: Confirm whether the host collects output directly or requires an agent or collector.
  • Adopting a backend before checking operational fit: Evaluate integration, query capabilities, access and retention needs, data handling, and ongoing work against the current stack.
