To add self-healing to Selenium tests, use a recovery layer such as Healenium: Java suites can wrap a WebDriver with SelfHealingDriver, while JavaScript, Python, and C# suites can connect through Healenium-Proxy. Healing depends on a locator that succeeded before; it can help a test recover from a changed page, but a passing healed run is not proof that the test still checks the intended behavior.
What Selenium self-healing does—and does not do
Self-healing is an added library or proxy workflow, not a built-in Selenium feature documented by the Selenium project. Healenium describes saving a locator baseline from a successful run. If a later run cannot find the element, it compares the current page state with that baseline, proposes candidate locators, and uses the candidate with the highest score to continue. It can also produce a report containing the healed locator and a screenshot. Healenium-Web repository
This is a recovery mechanism for locator changes. It does not establish that an element still has the same meaning or that every kind of test failure can be repaired. A changed page may have removed or repurposed the control your test meant to check, so inspect the report and verify the resulting application state.
Choose an integration path
| Path | Supported clients in Healenium documentation | How it connects | Operational considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healenium-Web | Java | Wrap the ordinary WebDriver in test code with SelfHealingDriver. |
Requires the Healenium backend. |
| Healenium-Proxy | Java, Python, JavaScript, and C# | Configure a RemoteWebDriver to connect to the proxy between the Selenium client and Selenium server. | Requires operating the proxy and backend service stack; confirm support for your exact framework and configuration. |
The documented service stack can include PostgreSQL for reference selectors, healing, reports, and DOM, as well as the proxy, backend, and selector imitator. Evaluate that deployment footprint as part of a proof of concept. Healenium documentation

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add Healenium-Web to a Java test
The following is the integration shape documented for Java. The repository README reviewed on October 3, 2026 listed version 3.5.8; check the repository for the current release and verify compatibility with your Selenium version before pinning it. Dependency coordinates and setup details can change, so use the README for the exact build configuration. Healenium-Web README
- Start the Healenium backend. Follow the current Healenium deployment documentation and confirm the backend is reachable from the test process.
- Add the published
healenium-webdependency to the Java test project, using a release compatible with the project’s Selenium version. - Create your normal WebDriver with the browser and options your suite already uses.
- Wrap the driver with Healenium’s
SelfHealingDriver, then use the wrapped driver in the test in place of the original driver. - Run a focused test successfully to establish the locator baseline before evaluating recovery behavior.
- Review healing output after a locator failure. Check the report, candidate locator, screenshot, and application state before accepting a change.
The README demonstrates settings named recovery-tries, score-cap, and heal-enabled. Their exact values and configuration syntax should come from the release you install; do not copy values from an example without checking the current version’s documentation. Healenium-Web README

Use the proxy for other Selenium languages
Healenium-Proxy is the documented option when the Selenium client is JavaScript, Python, or C#, or when a team wants a proxy integration. Instead of connecting the client directly to its Selenium server, configure a RemoteWebDriver connection to the proxy. Follow the proxy documentation for the endpoint, service startup, and language-specific configuration; the available evidence does not establish a single runnable configuration that applies to every client and deployment. Healenium documentation
Because the proxy sits between the test client and Selenium server, include service health, networking, and backend dependencies in the proof of concept. For mixed-language suites, test each supported client and framework combination rather than assuming identical behavior across languages.

Roll out healing without hiding failures
- Keep healing off for absence checks. If a test asserts that a button or other element is absent, healing could turn the expected missing-element failure into a successful lookup. Healenium’s README demonstrates disabling healing for a method that checks whether a button is present. Use the release-specific mechanism for that check. Healenium-Web README
- Capture the original failure and the recovery evidence. Retain the initial exception, healed locator, report, screenshot, and resulting application state so reviewers can tell what changed.
- Promote appropriate repairs into maintained test code. Treat a healed locator as a proposal to inspect, not an automatic replacement for a stable, meaningful selector.
- Verify against the running application. Selenium’s guidance for generated locators says to verify locators against the running application, review proposals, and run a focused test repeatedly. It also warns against sleeps and absolute XPath patterns. Selenium locator guidance
- Keep examples current. Selenium advises teams using coding agents to provide current documentation and project conventions; older examples can describe removed APIs or brittle practices. Match setup to the Selenium version actually used in the project. Selenium WebDriver documentation
What to expect for performance, reliability, and cost
The documented sources do not provide an independently attributable performance statistic, healing success rate, or time-savings figure. Do not use a successful rerun as a reliability metric by itself: inspect whether the proposed element represents the intended control and whether the test still validates the required behavior.
