Before you start
Choose a clear image that remains recognizable when displayed small and cropped. A square image usually works best. To keep the full edges of a portrait or landscape photo visible, add borders around it before uploading. Microsoft recommends a square image or borders to avoid unwanted cropping.
Microsoft’s account-picture guidance says most static image files are supported, but HEIC and animated GIF files are not. Convert a HEIC photo to a supported static format such as JPEG or PNG before uploading.
Add a picture in the standard Teams desktop app
These steps apply to the usual work, school, or standard Teams account experience on desktop, according to Microsoft’s Teams instructions.

- Open Teams and select your current profile picture at the top right. If you have not added a photo, this may show your initials.
- When the account manager opens, select your profile picture again.
- Select Upload, then choose the image on your computer.
- Adjust the crop if Teams provides one.
- Select Save.
To delete the existing photo, follow the same path and select Remove, then save if Teams asks you to confirm the change. Microsoft’s current instructions use the button labels Upload and Remove; image or camera icons may appear alongside them.
Change your picture on an iPhone or iPad
For standard Teams on iOS, Microsoft’s instructions are:
- Tap your current picture or initials at the top left.
- Tap your name to open your profile.
- Tap Update photo.
- Take a new photo or select one from your device.
Teams displays a notification when the profile photo has been updated successfully.
Change your picture on Android
For standard Teams on Android, use the route documented by Microsoft:

The Android menu differs from the iPhone and iPad route, so do not look for the iOS-only Update photo option on Android.

Teams Free: desktop instructions
Teams Free uses different labels from the standard work or school experience. Microsoft’s Teams Free instructions give these steps:
- Select your profile picture near the top of Teams.
- Select your profile picture again.
- Select Upload picture and choose an image.
- Save the change if prompted.
To delete it, select Remove picture. Teams Free also documents an alternate desktop route: open the People tab, select More options, and use the option to update your name and photo.
Teams Free: mobile instructions
For Teams Free mobile, Microsoft’s instructions are:

- Choose an available action, such as Open photo library, Camera, or Remove photo.
On iPhone, Teams Free also provides a Take photo option. View photo lets you inspect the current image.
What to do if Teams will not let you change the picture
If you use a work or school account and the upload or edit control is missing, your organization may have disabled profile-picture changes. IT or HR can restrict this setting. In that case, changing the picture from Teams may not be possible without an administrator changing the policy. See Microsoft’s work or school profile-picture guidance.

You can also try Microsoft’s account-level route:
- Sign in to myaccount.microsoft.com with your work or school account.
- Select the Edit icon on your current profile photo.
- Upload or change the picture.
- Select Save.
Another documented option for a work or school account is to open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, select File > Account, and choose Change photo. This redirects you to your organization’s personal profile page. A work or school profile picture is associated with the Microsoft account rather than being limited to Teams; it can appear in other Microsoft apps and on devices where you use that account. Why the old picture or initials still appear
A successful upload does not guarantee an immediate change everywhere. Microsoft says an account picture can take up to 24 hours to appear across services. The Teams support page also says updates can take time to propagate across channels.
If the new image appears in one place but not another, try these checks:
- Close and reopen Teams.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Check the account in another Teams client or device.
- Clear the Teams cache if the desktop client is still showing stale information; Microsoft notes that this may make the update appear faster.
- Allow up to 24 hours for Microsoft 365 services to synchronize.
Common picture-upload problems

Can I add a Teams profile picture from Settings > Profile?
That is not the current primary path for the standard Teams desktop app. Select your profile picture, select it again, choose Upload, and select Save. Settings > Profile is documented for Teams Free mobile.

Are Teams profile pictures separate from Microsoft 365 account pictures?
For work or school accounts, the picture is associated with the Microsoft work or school account and can appear across Microsoft apps and devices using that account. It is not necessarily a Teams-only image.
Why is my Teams profile picture still showing my initials?
The change may still be propagating across Teams and Microsoft 365 services. Restart Teams, sign out and back in, or clear the Teams cache. Microsoft says account-picture updates can take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere.
Can I upload a HEIC photo or animated GIF?
Microsoft’s current account guidance says HEIC and animated GIF files are not supported. Convert the image to a supported static format, such as JPEG or PNG, before uploading.
Why does Teams crop my profile picture?
Profile pictures are displayed in a constrained shape, so portrait and landscape images may lose their edges. Use a square source image or add borders around the original image to keep the entire subject visible.
What can I do if my employer disabled profile-picture changes?
Try the My Account portal. If editing is also unavailable there, contact your organization’s IT or HR department because the restriction may be controlled by company policy.
