To add a repeating header with page numbers in a PDFShift-generated PDF, send a header object with HTML in its source field and include PDFShift’s {{ page }} variable where the current page number should appear. Add {{ total }} for the total page count. PDFShift’s documented Node/Unfetch example uses the v3 PDF conversion endpoint and an X-API-Key header.
Configure a repeating header in the PDFShift request
The header configuration has three relevant fields: source, height, and optional start_at. The source can be a URL or raw HTML. The example below uses raw HTML so the page-number placeholders and basic styling stay with the request. PDFShift’s guide demonstrates this pattern with Node and Unfetch; the HTTP request is a POST to https://api.pdfshift.io/v3/convert/pdf with JSON and an X-API-Key header. Use the page variables where they belong
Put the variables in the header or footer source, not in the main document markup. PDFShift documents these variables: {{ title }}, {{ url }}, {{ page }}, {{ total }}, and {{ date }}. For example, {{ page }} is the current page and {{ total }} is the total number of pages. The documented date format is M/D/YY-H:MM am/pm.

height sets the header area and is measured in pixels by default; PDFShift also accepts mm, cm, and in. The right value depends on the header’s content and the page layout—PDFShift does not prescribe a universal height. Use start_at when the header should begin after the first page; the guide says the default is page one.
The footer uses the same configuration pattern as the header. Set it when you need repeating content at the bottom of pages, for example a page number or document label.

Keep header styles, fonts, and assets self-contained
Do not rely on the header or footer to fetch external CSS, JavaScript, or fonts over the network. PDFShift says those network requests will not work for header/footer content. Keep the markup and styles inline, or embed required resources as Base64.
For a custom font, PDFShift’s Help Center instructs users to Base64-encode it and include and use it in both the main document and the header/footer. PDFShift reports successful testing with TrueType and WOFF2 fonts; see its custom-font instructions.

Avoid first-page content spilling onto page two
Headers and footers reserve space through the document margins. A common pagination issue occurs when the header starts on a later page but page one already fills its available area: reserving space for the header can push content onto page two. PDFShift’s troubleshooting guidance gives this first-page rule for a header:

}Adjust these rules to match the margins already set for the document, particularly if both a header and footer are present. After conversion, inspect the first-page boundary and the page where the header or footer begins; a margin adjustment can change where content breaks. - Page numbers do not appear: Confirm that
{{ page }}or{{ total }}is inside the header or footer’ssourcecontent. PDFShift documents those variables for that content. - The header is cut off or crowded: Increase the configured
heightand check that its units are intentional. The default is pixels;mm,cm, andinare also accepted. - A remote font or stylesheet is missing: Header/footer resources cannot depend on network requests. Inline styles or embed the resource as Base64; custom fonts must be included in both the body and header/footer.
- First-page content moves to a second page: Check whether reserving margin for a later-starting header or footer has reduced available space. Tune the relevant
@page:firstmargin rule against the document’s existing page margins. - The header appears on the wrong pages: Check
start_at. PDFShift’s guide says the default is page one; set the field when the header should start later.
