To add an overlay to a YouTube livestream, add it as a source in your streaming software, position it over your video in the scene, and test it before going live. In OBS Studio, use an Image source for a local graphic, a Text source for editable words, or a Browser source for web-based alerts, chat, and widgets.
Choose the right overlay method
| Overlay you want | OBS source or route | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Static graphic, frame, banner, or logo | Image source | A file stored on your computer |
| Editable text, such as a label or title | Text source | Simple wording you want to style in OBS |
| Alerts, chat, goals, or other web widgets | Browser source | A hosted overlay URL from a provider |
| Provider-created multi-widget layout | Provider editor, then Browser source; some services also offer plugins or scene imports | Widgets and themes managed in a provider account |
OBS describes Browser sources as web pages added to a scene, primarily for alert overlays and chat boxes. Its Sources Guide explains the built-in source types, and its alerts and chat tutorial covers adding those elements without requiring a plugin.
Add a local image or text overlay in OBS
- Select the scene: In OBS, choose the scene that will contain the overlay, or create one for the broadcast layout.
- Add a source: In the Sources dock, click the + button. Choose Image for a graphic file or Text for editable text.
- Set the source properties: For an image, select the graphic file. For text, enter the copy and adjust its available style settings.
- Place it in the composition: Drag the source in the preview and resize it to fit. Keep it from covering important video, captions, or other information viewers need to see.
- Inspect the full scene: Check the composition at the stream canvas size before starting the broadcast.
Add a hosted overlay, alert, or chat box
- Copy the overlay URL: In the overlay provider’s manager or editor, copy the URL for the overlay or widget you want. Treat account-linked widget URLs as private; do not publish them.
- Create a Browser source: In the selected OBS scene, click the + in the Sources dock and choose Browser.
- Enter the URL and dimensions: Paste the provider URL into the source properties and set its width and height to match the stream canvas or the intended widget area. StreamElements uses 1920 by 1080 as a default full-canvas example when the canvas has not been changed; its guide also suggests choosing 30 or 60 FPS according to stream settings and computer capability.
- Position the source: Use the OBS preview to place and scale the overlay. If the overlay is designed for the full canvas, make its Browser source dimensions match that canvas.
- Test before broadcasting: Use the provider’s preview or test-alert control, then inspect the active scene. Streamlabs documents alert test controls in its alerts setup guide.
For StreamElements, the documented route is to copy the overlay URL from its manager or editor, add an OBS Browser source, paste the URL, and configure its dimensions and frame rate. Its overlay guide covers assets and widgets such as labels, goals, chat, and alerts.

Streamlabs documents several setup routes: import a .overlay file into Streamlabs Desktop, add image files manually to scenes, use its OBS plugin, or import scenes into OBS. If you want alerts in OBS without the plugin, copy the Alert Box Widget URL and add it as an OBS Browser source. Follow the service’s overlay setup guide for the route you choose, then use the alert test controls to verify the result.

These are different setup workflows, not evidence that one provider delivers better performance or visual quality than another. Choose based on whether you need a local asset, a hosted widget, or a provider-managed layout.
Troubleshoot overlays that do not look or behave as expected
- The hosted overlay is missing: Confirm that the Browser source contains the intended URL and is included in the active scene. Check that its dimensions are usable and that the provider page loads.
- The overlay is the wrong size or position: Compare the Browser source dimensions with the stream canvas, then resize or reposition it in the OBS preview.
- An alert has not appeared: Trigger the provider’s test alert or preview function before going live, and verify the correct alert widget URL is in the Browser source.
- A provider URL may be exposed: Avoid sharing account-linked widget URLs publicly. If you have exposed one, check the provider’s account tools for a way to regenerate or replace it.
Provider and OBS interfaces can change. The workflows described here reflect the documentation available on October 3, 2026.
