Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo add or remove a work or school account in Windows 11, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. Select Connect to add an account, or select an existing account and choose Disconnect to remove its connection from this PC. Disconnecting does not delete the underlying work or school account.
Choose the right way to use your organization account
When an app asks whether to add a work or school account to Windows, the choice affects more than that app. The available options and management effects depend on the sign-in flow and your organization’s policy.
| Choice | What it does | Device relationship |
|---|---|---|
| No, this app only | Signs you in to the current app without adding the account to Windows. Microsoft says, “Your account isn’t added to the device, and it isn’t shown in Windows Settings under Accounts.” | Microsoft says this choice does not register the device in the organization’s directory through this flow. Microsoft Support explains the app-only option. |
| Add or register the account on a personal PC | Can make the account available for sign-in across apps and register the device with the organization. | The organization must support personal or BYOD devices for the Settings connection flow. Management may be offered or required depending on organization policy. Microsoft’s account guide covers the connection requirement and its personal-device registration guidance describes registration. |
| Join an organization-owned PC | Uses a separate work-device setup flow intended for an organization-owned Windows device. | Follow the setup instructions from your IT administrator; do not assume that every account connection is a device join. See Microsoft’s work-device join guidance. |
If your prompt offers “No, this app only,” choose it when you only want access in that app and do not want to add the account to Windows through that prompt. If you are unsure whether your organization expects device registration or management, check with its IT administrator before continuing. Microsoft reported that a modernized registration experience was rolling out during November and December 2025; some users may still see the previous experience, so prompt wording can differ.
Add a work or school account in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
- Select Connect next to the option to add a work or school account.
- Enter your organization account details and complete the sign-in prompts. Your organization may require identity verification or additional enrollment steps.
This connection method on a personal PC depends on the organization allowing personal or BYOD devices. If this is a company- or school-owned PC, use the setup process your IT administrator specified instead.

What information might the organization see?
Registering a device can make basic device details visible in the organization’s directory. Microsoft lists information such as the device name, operating system and version, join type, owner, management configuration, compliance status, registration date, and last active status. The details shown and whether management applies depend on the sign-in flow and your organization’s policy.
Disconnect the account from this PC
- Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
- Select or expand the work or school account you want to remove.
- Choose Disconnect and confirm.
Microsoft Support states that “disconnecting a work or school account doesn’t delete the account. It removes the sign-in information and data from the device.” The work or school identity continues to exist; this action removes its connection from this Windows device. Your organization’s policies may still govern access to its resources and which options are available.

If the PC is lost or you cannot access it
Disconnecting in Settings is a local removal action and requires access to the PC. If the device is lost or unavailable, use the device list in your work or school My Account portal to disable it. A disabled device can no longer authenticate with the organization or access its resources.
Be careful: Microsoft says a user cannot undo an accidental device disable. An organization administrator must add the device again. If you disable the wrong device or need access restored, contact your IT administrator.
