How to add music to your Instagram profile

Open the Instagram mobile app and go to your profile.

Tap Edit profile.

Look for Music, Banner or Banners, or a control labeled Add music to your profile. The exact label and location can differ between app versions.

Search Instagram’s music library or choose a suggested track.

Select the song. If an excerpt control appears, choose the passage you want visitors to hear.

How to change or remove the song
Return to your profile, tap Edit profile and open the same music setting. Choose a different song to replace the selection, or use the available remove control to clear it. Menu wording may vary by app version. iDownloadBlog’s guide describes the selection, replacement and removal flow.

Why can’t I add music to my profile?
If you cannot find the setting, first check the profile editor for alternate labels such as Banner or Banners, then make sure the Instagram app is up to date. Access may also vary by country, account, rollout, app version or music licensing, but those factors do not establish the cause for any one account. Instagram’s current country- and account-eligibility rules are not established by the sources cited here, so the in-app editor is the practical check.

What profile music does—and what it does not do
Profile music is a song selection attached to your profile, not music added to a Story, Reel, Note, photo or carousel. Visitors tap the profile song to play it; it does not start automatically. Instagram introduced profile music on August 22, 2024, with a choice of a short excerpt from its music library. Meta separately announced music for feed photos and carousels in 2023, which is a different feature: Meta’s announcement about music in feed posts.

How close is it to Myspace?
The Myspace comparison is a nostalgic one: both let people make music part of their social profile identity. Instagram’s profile song requires a visitor to tap to hear it, as TechCrunch noted in its 2024 launch coverage; do not assume the two services have identical playback or music catalogs.
Myspace’s help page describes a Portfolio area for selected profile content, including songs, albums, mixes, videos, photos and GIFs. It allows up to one large item and 30 smaller items. That page does not document current autoplay behavior, so the comparison should not be taken to mean that Myspace music currently autoplays. See Myspace’s Portfolio help page.
