Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To play multiple songs in a PowerPoint, insert each audio file on the slide where it should begin, then select its audio icon and choose Playback > Play in Background. Repeat for each track. To stop a song after a set number of slides, configure its Stop playing > After setting.
Add multiple songs in desktop PowerPoint
- Choose where the first song starts. Select the slide where you want the first track to begin.
- Insert the audio file. Choose Insert > Audio, locate the audio file on your device, and insert it.
- Set the track to play across slides. Select the audio icon, open the Playback tab, and choose Play in Background. This starts the track automatically and plays it across slides.
- Add the next song. Select the slide where the next track should start, insert its audio file, and set that track to Play in Background as well. Continue for each additional song.
- Preview the slideshow. Start the slide show and check that each song begins on the intended slide and plays as expected.
Microsoft provides instructions for adding a song and choosing background playback in its guide to playing music across multiple slides.
Choose where each song stops
By default, a background track can continue across slides. To end it after a chosen number of slides, select the audio item and set Stop playing > After to the desired slide count. Depending on your PowerPoint version, you can access this control through the Animation Pane or the audio item’s Media Options. Microsoft’s Windows guidance states that the maximum value is 999 slides. The control location can differ between Windows and Mac.
Choose how each song starts and behaves
- For a track that plays throughout the presentation: Insert it on the opening slide and use Play in Background.
- For a track that begins on a later slide: Insert it on that slide and configure its playback there.
- For music limited to one slide: Use per-slide playback rather than background playback across the presentation.
- For click-to-play: Choose the click-start behavior instead of automatic playback.
- For a repeating track: Enable the option to loop the audio until stopped.
- To hide the audio icon during the show: Use the hide-during-show option when the audio is set to start automatically.
Microsoft’s instructions for adding or deleting audio in PowerPoint describe these playback options. Labels and control locations may vary by platform and version.

What to do if separate songs do not synchronize
If multiple tracks do not start or transition in the way you need, Microsoft suggests joining them into one continuous audio file with an audio editor such as Audacity. This is an optional workaround; separate files are not required for adding multiple songs. Once combined, insert the single file on the slide where playback should begin and configure it for the presentation.
PowerPoint for the web and mobile limitations
Microsoft’s dedicated music-across-slides guide includes web instructions and lists MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, and OGA as supported audio formats in PowerPoint for the web. However, Microsoft’s platform comparison marks adding audio as unsupported on the web, so web insertion capability is not consistently described across Microsoft’s documentation. Check the controls available in your current web version rather than assuming they match desktop PowerPoint. Microsoft’s PowerPoint platform comparison also shows that audio playback across slides varies among mobile apps: some Android and iOS entries are marked unsupported, so mobile behavior depends on the specific app and device.
