In a classic WordPress theme, add a description by opening Appearance > Menus, enabling Description in Screen Options if needed, entering text in the menu item, and saving the menu. The text appears on the site only if the active theme displays menu descriptions. Block themes use a different editing workflow, so the classic Menus instructions may not apply.
First, identify your theme’s menu editor
WordPress menu editing depends on the theme. The classic Appearance > Menus screen may be available for classic or hybrid setups, but it is not the universal navigation editor. WordPress documentation notes that WordPress 5.9 was the last version to include that screen for all sites by default; in WordPress 6.0 and later, block-theme navigation is managed with the Navigation block. WordPress’s Appearance Menus documentation explains the distinction.
| Theme setup | Where to edit navigation | What to know about descriptions |
|---|---|---|
| Classic theme | Appearance > Menus, when available | The per-item Description field may be hidden in Screen Options. Front-end display requires active-theme support. |
| Block theme | The Navigation block editing workflow | Do not assume the classic Description field or classic-theme output behavior is available; check the controls and output provided by the block theme. |
Add a description in a classic theme
- Open Appearance > Menus. If the screen is missing, check whether the site uses a block theme or whether a plugin or theme provides an alternate classic menu editor.
- Select the menu you want to edit, then expand the menu item whose description you want to add.
- Reveal the Description field if necessary. Open Screen Options at the top of the screen and enable Description.
- Enter the description in that item’s Description field.
- Save the menu, then visit the relevant part of the site to check the result.
The description is a per-item field in the classic menu editor. Saving it stores the text, but does not ensure visitors will see it: WordPress states that the description is displayed only if the current theme supports it. See the Appearance Menus documentation.
If the description does not appear on the site
If the field is saved but the text is absent from the front end, the likely issue is theme output rather than the menu editor. Check the theme’s menu rendering or ask the theme developer whether it supports descriptions. A theme can register menu locations and render them through WordPress’s classic menu functions, but the change needed to print descriptions depends on the theme’s implementation. The Navigation Menus Theme Handbook covers menu registration and display, and Theme Functions describes theme setup.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the description remains in the expanded menu item after saving.
- Check the live menu, not just the dashboard editor.
- If you maintain the theme, inspect how its menu is rendered, including any walker or menu template. There is no universal theme change that can be prescribed without knowing that implementation.
What block-theme users should do
In a block theme, edit navigation with the Navigation block rather than assuming the classic Menus screen applies. Inspect the block editor and the theme’s available navigation controls and output. The cited WordPress documentation establishes this workflow change, but does not establish that every block theme exposes a menu-description control. A classic-theme PHP change should not be treated as a block-theme fix.
Developer note: editor fields and front-end output are separate
The wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields hook runs in the classic menu editor and can be used to add custom fields to menu items. WordPress introduced it in version 5.4.0. It is relevant when building an additional editor field; adding a field with this hook does not, by itself, make the built-in Description appear on the front end. Rendering still has to be implemented in the theme’s menu output. WordPress Developer Resources documents the hook.
