Choose the add-in to bring a game into a presentation; choose slide sync to bring a presentation into a game.
Choose the right Kahoot and PowerPoint workflow
| Workflow | Direction | Where you set it up | What stays connected |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerPoint add-in | Kahoot into PowerPoint | PowerPoint | A link to a kahoot; host it while presenting |
| Slide sync | PowerPoint into Kahoot | Kahoot web creator | Slides imported from OneDrive or SharePoint can be updated from the source deck |
| File upload | PowerPoint, Keynote, or PDF into Kahoot | Kahoot web creator | An uploaded file; this is separate from OneDrive slide sync |
These are separate features, and Kahoot says availability depends on the user’s plan. Its current help pages do not specify which exact tiers include the add-in or slide sync. Check Kahoot’s pricing information for your region and account rather than relying on an older plan comparison.
Host a live kahoot from PowerPoint
The PowerPoint add-in places a link to an existing kahoot in your deck. During the presentation, you can host the game from Presenter View instead of switching to a separate presentation tool. Kahoot describes this integration in its guide to hosting live kahoots in Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Install the Kahoot add-in. In PowerPoint, open the add-ins or Office Add-ins option and find the Kahoot add-in. Follow the prompts to add it to PowerPoint.
- Check your Office setup. Kahoot’s instructions mention signing in to an installed Office app with an active Office 365 subscription and using a current version of PowerPoint 2019. Requirements and availability may change, so consult Kahoot’s current add-in guide if your Office setup differs.
- Add the add-in to a slide. Insert the Kahoot add-in on the slide where you want the game link to appear.
- Sign in and select a game. Sign in to your Kahoot account, find the kahoot you want, and copy its shareable link from the game’s share option or URL.
- Link the kahoot. Paste the link into the add-in and select Add kahoot.
- Present and host. Start the PowerPoint presentation and use Presenter View to host the linked kahoot as you advance through the deck.
Adding the add-in and linking a kahoot are distinct steps: installing it does not itself select or embed a game.

Sync PowerPoint slides into a kahoot
Use slide sync when you want to build an interactive kahoot around slides from a Microsoft presentation. The setup happens in Kahoot’s web creator and uses a presentation stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. Kahoot’s PowerPoint slide-sync instructions describe selecting all imported slides or choosing particular slides, and updating imported slides when the source deck changes.
- Open the kahoot creator on the web. Slide sync is available on Kahoot’s web platform, not in its mobile apps.
- Choose Import slides, then Sync with OneDrive.
- Authenticate with Microsoft and select a presentation from OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Choose the slides to add. Import all slides or select specific ones, then continue building the kahoot.
- Update after source changes. If you change the deck and want the kahoot to reflect it, use the slide update option. If a newly added source slide does not appear in the Add Slide dialog, select Update all slides.
Limits of synced slides
- A kahoot can contain one presentation and no more than 200 questions; each imported slide counts as a question.
- Audio, video, and animations from the PowerPoint presentation do not sync. Add a new slide in Kahoot if you need to include additional media.
- PowerPoint files using restricted fonts may fail to import or sync. Replace those fonts with standard, unrestricted fonts and try again.
Upload a presentation instead of syncing it
Kahoot also lets you upload a file in its web creator. This is a different route from OneDrive or SharePoint sync: it does not use the documented source-deck sync workflow. Kahoot’s slide import guide lists PowerPoint (.pptx or .ppt), Keynote (.key), and PDF (.pdf) as supported formats, with a maximum upload size of 80 MB. Import is web-only and is not available in Kahoot’s mobile apps.

Fix common PowerPoint import and sync problems
- A new slide is missing: In the Add Slide dialog, select Update all slides to refresh the source slides available to the kahoot.
- The file will not import or sync: Check for restricted fonts in the PowerPoint deck and replace them with standard, unrestricted fonts.
- Media or animations are missing: Audio, video, and animations are not carried over by slide sync. Add the media on a new Kahoot slide.
- You cannot find slide sync or the add-in: Confirm you are using the appropriate platform—PowerPoint for the add-in, Kahoot’s web creator for slide sync or file upload—and check whether your plan includes the feature.
- The upload is rejected: For file upload, make sure the file is a supported type and no larger than 80 MB.
