ORBIT’s announced approach is to download game covers over HTTPS from xlenore/ps2-covers and save them to a USB drive; its 3D save icons come from the newest save for each game on a memory card. The announcement does not specify the menu actions or configuration keys to enable either feature, so exact click-by-click steps cannot be confirmed from the available instructions.

How ORBIT handles covers and save icons

Game covers

ORBIT is described as downloading covers directly on the PlayStation 2 over HTTPS from the project announcement, using the xlenore/ps2-covers collection as its source and saving cover files to USB. The project author presents this as an alternative to preparing covers with a PC tool or installing a prebuilt cover pack.

3D save icons

For each game, ORBIT reads the newest save it finds on a memory card and displays that save’s icon spinning on the game’s library card. The announcement does not name a required memory-card model or say that a new card is needed. If you already have a usable card containing saves, the stated feature does not establish a reason to replace it.

Prepare the USB drive and start ORBIT

The project announcement gives this basic setup context, but it does not document the exact cover or icon settings:

  1. Extract ORBIT onto a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
  2. Put your ISO game files in the drive’s DVD/ directory.
  3. Start launcher.elf from uLaunchELF, or configure it as FreeMcBoot autoboot.
  4. On first boot, ORBIT writes a commented config.ini.

These are the installation details the announcement provides, not verified instructions for activating cover downloads or 3D icons. It does not identify a specific menu path, configuration key, or icon-refresh action. The author links a written guide at the ORBIT guide, but its instructions could not be confirmed here; consult the current guide or build before editing configuration or following purported menu steps.

Check networking before expecting cover downloads

Because ORBIT’s described cover retrieval uses HTTPS from the console, the PS2 needs a working network connection for that download path. The announcement does not provide network setup instructions or specify additional requirements for the cover download.

Do not confuse downloading covers with loading games over the network. The author warns that network game loading with Neutrino’s UDP transport needs a cable at both ends: Wi-Fi packet loss can make that loading unreliable. This caveat concerns network game loading, not a stated requirement that covers be downloaded by wired connection.

What remains unconfirmed

  • The exact ORBIT menu controls or configuration keys for enabling cover downloads and 3D icons.
  • Whether the current build offers a manual refresh action for either feature.
  • Which save formats or memory-card setups are compatible beyond the announcement’s description of reading the newest save.

Until those details are checked against a current guide or working build, avoid changing undocumented settings based on guessed instructions.

Tolesum 256MB Card for PS2 Memory Card Slot, Two Banks, Fat or Slim Console
  • TWO SEPARATE 128 MB BANKS, NOT ONE POOL OF 256 MB: The selector on the front of the card chooses which bank the console talks to, and each bank is its own storage area with its own save list. Nothing spans the two, so a file written on one side is invisible from the other. Set the selector first and then turn the console on, because the console reads the position once at start-up and does not look again.
  • BUILT FOR PS2 AND FOR THE SLIM, AND FOR NOTHING ELSE: It drops into the memory card slot made for PS2, on every revision from the first SCPH-10000 through to the 90000 series, fat or slim. It is not for the PS One, not for the PSX, and not for a fat PS3 running a disc in backward compatible mode. Those machines use a different card and will not read this one.
  • IT IS A STORAGE CARD, AND IT WILL NOT RUN FREEMCBOOT: If the plan is to install a homebrew launcher, this is the wrong card and no amount of formatting will change that. What it does do is hold save files, and a lot of them, which is the job most people actually need a second card for.
  • NO BOOT DISC, NO DRIVERS, NOTHING TO INSTALL: Push it into the slot and the console lists it straight away. Save sizes vary by title, and the back of a game case usually prints how many kilobytes a save needs, so you can work out how far one bank will go before you fill it.
  • WHAT ARRIVES IS ONE BLACK CARD, 5.6 BY 4.1 BY 0.6 CM: Two habits keep a save file intact on any card of this kind: leave the console powered down while the card goes in or comes out, and do not cut the power while a title is writing.
