If you use Article structured data, make its author entries match the byline exactly. These are complementary steps: the byline and profile serve readers, while structured data gives search engines machine-readable information. Google does not require Article properties or guarantee a special search result for pages that use them.
1. Decide who the author is
Start with the authorship you can accurately show to readers. A page may have one individual author, several individual co-authors, or an organization as its author. Keep this decision consistent across the visible page and any structured data.
- For one writer, use that person’s name.
- For co-authored work, show each person’s name rather than combining several names into one author entry.
- For content authored by a publication or other organization, identify the organization as the author.
2. Add a visible byline
Place a readable byline where readers can readily find it, typically near the article’s title or publication details. Google’s people-first content guidance asks publishers to consider: “Do pages carry a byline, where one might be expected?” It also asks whether bylines lead to further information about the authors, including their background and the areas they write about. These are reader-focused questions, not a promise of improved rankings. Google’s people-first content guidance
When a relevant profile exists, link each author’s name to it. Make sure the link’s destination is about the person readers expect, rather than a generic archive that provides no useful background.

3. Create a useful author profile
Give each author a clear destination: a dedicated author page or an About Me page focused on that person. Include accurate background relevant to the subjects they cover, and avoid unsupported credentials or claims. Google identifies author pages and blog About Me pages as examples of profile pages. The page’s primary focus should be one person or organization affiliated with the site for ProfilePage structured data to be appropriate. Google’s Profile page structured data guidance
A practical profile can explain the author’s role, relevant experience, and the subjects they write about. Keep it factual and useful; a longer bio is not automatically a better one.

4. Add author details to Article structured data, if appropriate
Structured data is optional for Article objects: Google lists recommended properties but no required properties. If your article template uses Article, NewsArticle, or BlogPosting markup, populate the author information accurately and consistently with the visible byline. Google’s Article documentation says to include every author shown on the page and not to merge multiple authors into the same author field. Google’s Article structured data guidance
- Use a separate author entry for each co-author.
- Use
Personfor an individual andOrganizationfor an organizational author. - Use the author’s name in
author.name; put a job title in its appropriate property rather than appending it to the name. - Provide an accurate author profile URL when one is available.
- Use
sameAsonly for suitable external links that identify the same author.
Schema.org defines the author property as accepting a Person or Organization. The appropriate choice depends on who actually authored the page.

5. Validate the markup and check the live page
- Check that each visible author appears in the structured data, with separate entries for co-authors.
- Run the page’s structured data through Google’s Article guidance and validation resources, including the Rich Results Test.
- After publishing, use URL Inspection in Search Console to inspect the deployed page.
- Allow time for Google to crawl and re-index the page. A valid markup test does not guarantee that Google will show a special search presentation.
What each approach does—and does not do
| Approach | Purpose | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Visible byline and author profile | Helps readers identify the writer and find relevant background. | By itself, it does not guarantee a ranking improvement. |
| Article structured data | Provides machine-readable article and author details. | It is not required for Article objects and does not guarantee a rich result or other special search presentation. |
| ProfilePage structured data | Describes a page primarily focused on one affiliated person or organization. | It is not a substitute for a clear, useful profile page. |
The Schema.org author property defines the vocabulary, while Google’s documentation explains how Google recommends using markup for its search features. A CMS-integrated plugin may simplify implementation, but the right choice depends on your site’s existing setup.
