On a supported Samsung Smart TV in Canada, you can add CBC Gem from the TV’s built-in app search. You need an internet connection and a Samsung account to access Smart Hub and download apps. Samsung menu names can differ slightly by TV model and software version.
Before you install CBC Gem
- Connect the Samsung TV to the internet.
- Make sure you can sign in to a Samsung account. Samsung requires an account for Smart Hub and app downloads.
- Use the TV in Canada. CBC Gem’s current app listing says its content is available for streaming only within Canada.
The CBC Gem app is published by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. CBC offers a free CBC Account tier and a CBC Gem Premium tier. The CBC Gem app listing describes Premium as including ad-free on-demand episodes, CBC News Network live 24/7, and surround sound, followed by a one-week trial and then $5.99 per month plus taxes. You can install the app without assuming that every program requires a CBC account; the account prompt and available features can depend on the current version of the TV app.
How to add CBC Gem to a Samsung Smart TV
- Press the Home button on the Samsung remote.
- Press Left to expand the menu on the left side of the screen.
- Select Search.
- Use the on-screen keyboard to type CBC Gem.
- Select the CBC Gem app from the search results. Check that it is the official app from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
- Select Install.
- When the installation finishes, select Open.
Samsung’s supported installation process does not use a command, activation code, terminal, USB package, or special URL. You complete it with the remote and the TV’s on-screen menus.
Sign in to your Samsung account if required
If the TV asks you to sign in before opening or downloading apps, use this current Samsung menu path:

- From the Home screen, press Left to open the left-side menu.
- Select Settings, then All Settings.
- Go to General & Privacy → System Manager → Samsung Account.
- Scan the QR code shown on the TV, or select Remote Control to enter your details with the remote.
- If you choose Remote Control, enter your email address and password, then select Sign In.
After signing in, return to the app search and repeat the CBC Gem installation steps.
Add CBC Gem to the Samsung TV home screen
Some Samsung TVs show Add to Home after installation. If it appears, select it before selecting Open.
If that option does not appear, add the app later:
- Press Home.
- Open Apps.
- Scroll to the bottom and select App Settings.
- Select CBC Gem.
- Select Add to Home.
To change its position afterward, highlight CBC Gem in the Apps row, press Down, select Move, position the app where you want it, and press Select to confirm.

What to do if CBC Gem does not appear in Search
If searching for “CBC Gem” produces no result, do not assume that a particular model year is automatically supported or unsupported. Samsung does not give a universal 2016, 2017, or 2018 cutoff in its current instructions. Availability depends on the TV model and whether its hardware can meet the app’s current memory and processing requirements.

Samsung’s stated workaround for an incompatible TV is to use an external media player, game console, or compatible TV box. A fixed firmware minimum or model-year compatibility cutoff is not established by Samsung’s current support instructions.

Reinstalling can help if the app is stuck, crashes, or behaves incorrectly.

- Press Home, then open Apps.
- Scroll to the bottom and select App Settings.
- Select CBC Gem.
- Select Delete.
- Select Delete again in the confirmation window.
- Return to Home → Search, find CBC Gem, and select Install.
If Samsung says the app is locked and requests a PIN, the default Samsung TV PIN is 0000, unless it has been changed. To change it, go to Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → System Manager → Change PIN.
Common questions about CBC Gem on Samsung TVs
There is no verified current procedure requiring a CBC activation website or an activation code for the supported Samsung installation steps. If CBC Gem displays a sign-in request after opening, follow the instructions shown in the TV app and use a CBC account if you want the account features or content that it makes available.

Can I install CBC Gem on any Samsung Smart TV?
No. CBC Gem may be absent from Search on older or incompatible TVs, or on models whose hardware cannot meet the app’s current memory or processing requirements. Samsung does not provide a single universal model-year cutoff in its current Canadian instructions.

Do I need a Samsung account to install CBC Gem?
Yes. Samsung states that a Samsung account is required to access Smart Hub and open or download apps. Sign in through Home → Left → Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → System Manager → Samsung Account.
Is CBC Gem free on a Samsung TV?

Can I move CBC Gem to a different position on the home screen?
Yes. In the Apps row, highlight CBC Gem, press Down, select Move, place it in the desired position, and press Select to confirm.
How do I uninstall CBC Gem?
Go to Home → Apps, scroll to the bottom, select App Settings, choose CBC Gem, select Delete, and select Delete again to confirm.
